Is New York Ready for Medical Marijuana?

New York -- Now that New Jersey has legalized medical marijuana, will New York follow suit? Manhattan Assemblyman Richard Gottfried thinks so. Gottfried sponsors legislation to legalize medical marijuana nearly every year and each time it fails. He's hoping that changes this year now national momentum finally seems to be behind legalization. Gottfried's bill, which is similar to another in the state Senate, would allow the use of marijuana to treat illnesses like cancer, arthritis or H.I.V.
"I think that the main obstacle over the years has been the fear of many in public life to touch anything with drugs," Gottfried told the Times. "But I think the climate around the states has changed."The question is, has the climate in this state changed? The Times suggests that it has, as several Republicans are quietly willing to support legalization. The main opponent remains the state Conservative Party, whose leader, Michael Long, said "there is no medical proof that marijuana assists anyone anyway. It would open the floodgates for misuse.”Beyond opponents, the true obstacle standing in the way of legalization is Albany itself. As Gabriel Sayegh, project director for the Drug Policy Alliance Network, put it, "If New York doesn’t pass medical marijuana legislation it has everything to do with the dysfunction in Albany."Source: New York Magazine (NY)Published: January 26, 2010Copyright: 2010 New York MagazineContact: nyletters nymag.comWebsite: http://www.newyorkmag.com/URL: http://drugsense.org/url/mlePnvELCannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

XMan420 Good Question.
"How about the Thousand's of people that swear that it help's them, funny that you can have "ONE" person swear in court to something that someone has done and send them to prison or the Death Chamber, and one is enough, but when thousand of people swear that marijuana can help them it is disregarded."

How about ........
Sending him a copy of (or studies from)"Granny Storm Crow's MMJ Reference List"? Even with all the government interference, there have been quite a few cannabis studies- it just is SO "promising" that researchers have trouble leaving it alone! But it's not a tenth of the research that SHOULD have been done. I've gathered over 150 pages of LINKS to studies and articles on medical cannabis. Just take a look at it. It's posted up at several cannabis forums and I also give away free copies to everyone who emails me at i.wantgrannyslist(at)greenpassion.org .

Michael Long
How is it that Michael Long can say that marijuana has no medical value? What about the Govt. grow opt. at Old Miss. Where the Govt. has been sending out marijuana for people for 30 plus yrs. How about the AMA doing research or the 14 States that say's that they have medical marijuana? How about the Thousand's of people that swear that it help's them, funny that you can have "ONE" person swear in court to something that someone has done and send them to prison or the Death Chamber, and one is enough, but when thousand of people swear that marijuana can help them it is disregarded. American people it is time to take a stand and fight this.
