Berkeley, Calif. -- Substituting marijuana for more harmful drugs may be a winning strategy in the fight against substance abuse, a U.S. researchers says.A study, published in the Harm Reduction Journal, of 350 marijuana users indicates 40 percent used marijuana to control their alcohol cravings, 66 percent as a replacement for prescription drugs and 26 percent for other, more potent, illegal drugs.
Amanda Reiman of the University of California, Berkeley, conducted the study at a medical marijuana dispensary."Substituting cannabis for alcohol has been described as a radical alcohol treatment protocol," Reiman said in a statement."This approach could be used to address heavy alcohol use in the British Isles -- people might substitute cannabis, a potentially safer drug than alcohol with less negative side-effects, if it were socially acceptable and available."Sixty-five percent of people reported using marijuana as a substitute because it has fewer adverse side effects than alcohol, illicit or prescription drugs, 34 percent because it has fewer withdrawal potential and 57.4 percent because marijuana provides better symptom management, the study says.Source: United Press International (Wire)Published: December 3, 2009Copyright 2009 United Press InternationalWebsite: http://www.upi.com/Contact: nationaldesk upi.comURL: http://drugsense.org/url/Q6DHW82tCannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

Is this relevant?
Police: 5 Boulder students OD on medicationhttp://www.summitdaily.com/article/20091203/NEWS/912039972/1078&ParentProfile=1055-0-I don't think these high school kids should have charges brought against them & I'm glad there's no harm. However; What I want to know is if these high school kids would face charges if the substance was cannabis (instead) and there was no overdose situation????Would this school et al. discriminate against the God-given natural plant?

Cannabis The Stabilizer
When a person quits addictive drugs or alcohol the world they live in is nothing like the world they've known. I remember when I went in a hospital to detox it was like I was on a visual trip but not a nice one. The hallway seemed really long but it wasn't long at all. Perception was really weird. Cannabis is an equalizer or stabilizer. It doesn't help with the pain of withdrawal but it helps the mind to calm down and cope. If the mind can calm down it would make it easier to kick an addictive drug. That's just my 2 cents.

CANNABIS: guardian, helper and friend.
I believe I remember news here at CNews a few years ago indicating cannabis helped people get off crack in DC. &&&When cops clamped down on cannabis, crack use and crimes associated with it went up. CNews had articles a few years ago indicating cannabis helped people escape meth problems in Hawaii. If people can get a script for methadone to help cope with heroin addiction, then people should expect to be allowed to use cannabis to escape the problems associated with alcohol and hard drug addiction. People should be able to use cannabis to begin with so they don't get mixed up with meth, crack, heroin, booze etc.... to begin with. That seems basic but maybe that's just Me.

We've come full circle
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cannabis was used for exactly that purpose, to wean a user off of harder stuff. And here we are again, (re)discovering yet another use for it. (Sigh) And we will still hear the benighted sheep-bleat from the prohibs: No med-i-cal u-u-uses! No med-i-cal u-u-uses! Ba-aa-ah!
