ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico– The head of a watchdog group that keeps an eye on Albuquerque police, is in trouble with the law.
Andres Valdes, head of Vecinos United, along with another community activist, were arrested Thursday on marijuana charges. For years, Valdes and his organization have been outspoken critics of APD. On Thursday, two officers say they saw Valdez and activist Libby Palmer smoking marijuana at a park. “He looked up at me and puffed a big puff of smoke, which was marijuana. It smelled like marijuana,” said Officer John Guilmette of APD. Libby Palmer made headlines last year when she was arrested while protesting a speaker opposed to bilingual education. Both Valdes and Palmer were booked and released on petty misdemeanor charges. Valdes may also face a charge for giving police a fake name. Valdes says police treated him with respect during the arrest.Pubdate: August 16, 1999http://www.kobtv.com/
