BETHEL, N.Y. (AP) — Woodstock veterans returned to Max Yasgur's old farm Sunday, this time for a 30th anniversary show more notable for sweet nostalgia than muddy mayhem.
Nudity, rain, gate crashings and other hallmarks of the famous '69 show that drew 400,000 people were in short supply at the "Day in the Garden'' concert. Instead, this was a one-day show geared toward '60s stalwarts and their families who wanted to hear the likes of Arlo Guthrie and Richie Havens. And it was a chance to rekindle a bit of Aquarian spirit many here believe was sullied by rioting crowds at the far larger official Woodstock '99 in Rome, N.Y., last month. "The word `Woodstock' is out, you can't use that word,'' said Joe Turner, 43, lounging in a lawn chair and wearing a psychedelic shirt. "It's been blasphemed.'' Turner was one of many '69 concert-goers to return to the grassy hill in 80 miles north of New York City. Some, like 53-year-old Lee Augustine of Wawarsing, came back with their children. "I wanted my kids to experience some of the music and camaraderie,'' he said as his three young children gobbled curly fries at his wife's lap. "You can repeat some of it. You can bring back the music.'' Country Joe McDonald, who sang his signature anti-Vietnam War "Fish Cheer,'' was on the bill of nine original performers, which also included David Crosby and Johnny Winter. By the evening, the promoters who have been fixing up the long-neglected site for more than a year said more than 12,000 people had bought tickets for the show. State Police had made four arrests by 7 p.m., all for possession of marijuana, Trooper Ryan Hadsall said. 7.53 p.m. ET (2354 GMT) August 15, 1999comments newsdigital.com© 1999, News America Digital Publishing, Inc.Related Article:The World Remembers Three Days of Peace & Love - 7/24/99http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread2196.shtml
