Is Dennis Peron a neo-hippie street pharmacist or a Apolitical visionary? "I'm just a guy from the Bronx," says 53-year-old Peron, "who thought there was an injustice and fought it."
Peron's quest to fight this injustice was spawned in 1990, when his ailing lover couldn't legally buy marijuana to ease the painful side-effects of AIDS. In frustration, Peron penned Proposition 215, which advocated the legalization of medical marijuana and was passed as California law in 1996. He also founded the San Francisco Cannabis Cultivators Club, which sold pot to people who had doctors' permission. In '96, however, when undercover agents copped weed without a prescription, the SFCC was raided and shut down -- and Peron was arrested and arraigned for distribution. The trial is still pending, but that didn't stop him from running for governor of California on the Republican (yes, Republican) ticket in '98. Losing the race only stoked his quest to keep spreading the word of pot through his Web site: http://www.marijuana.org/ and his latest venture, the Cannabis Farm: 20-acres of land, located two hours north of his home in San Francisco, where he grows ganja to give to sick people for free. Politically, Peron might not be reviewing California state budgets any time soon. But he's taking the adage "Think globally and act locally" to a higher level.- SK http://www.marijuana.org/Notorious99.htm
