Sheriff’s deputies from White and Wayne counties, along with agents of the Southern Illinois Drug Task Force, seized more than 1,300 marijuana plants Tuesday afternoon from five separate Southern Illinois locations.
Greg Hanisch, White County’s representative with the task force, said 755 plants were pulled up at locations in Wayne County, and another 609 in White County. Hanisch said the plants had an estimated street value of $2,000 each, making the haul worth nearly $3 million. Wayne County Sheriff Jerry Joslin led officers to one patch near the White County line that contained more than 300 plants. A second plot northwest of Carmi, near Centerville, yielded more than 500 plants. Joslin said a farmer tipped police about the suspected marijuana patch in Wayne County. An Illinois State Police airplane circled above the suspected pot patches, directing teams of officers into 7-foot-tall corn fields for the harvest. Where aerial support was unavailable, a police officer stood atop a step ladder placed in the back of a pickup truck and spotted clearings inside the corn fields where marijuana had been planted. Police said the patches had been photographed earlier from the air, giving search teams a clear guide to the suspected contraband. Some of the patches were as narrow as two corn rows wide and ran only a few yards long, while others had been cleared out by as many as four rows, and ran more than 100 feet long, police said. State Police Master Sgt. Greg Morris said most of the plants seized showed clear evidence of being fertilized and well cultivated. Evansville Courier & Press Wednesday, August 11, 1999
