SAN DIEGO Some 525 pounds of Marijuana have been seized at the border over the course of two days, United States Border Patrol authorities said Tuesday.
The value of the drugs confiscated in six separate incidents is estimated at $420,000. Authorities say smugglers attempted to sneak drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border in a variety of ways. Over the weekend, marijuana was found hidden inside speaker boxes, in a spare tire and in the roof compartment of a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra. The largest seizure happened near Jacumba, 76 miles south of San Diego. A Border Patrol agent noticed footprints along a border road. Authorities say someone tried to ``brush out'' or conceal the tracks by using a branch. Agents followed the footprints and found five people carrying duffel bags. Two of the suspects were arrested, while three escaped back across the Mexico border, authorities said. That incident resulted in the confiscation of 215 pounds of marijuana. The Drug Enforcement Administration will prosecute the smuggling cases.
