California -- The state Supreme Court returned to the medical marijuana wars Wednesday, agreeing to decide the validity of a law that shields doctor-approved pot users from arrest for possessing up to eight ounces of dried marijuana or growing six plants. The justices voted unanimously to review the issue after a prosecution appeal of a lower-court ruling in May. In that ruling, an appellate court found the 2003 law conflicted with California's 1996 medical marijuana initiative, which allows possession of an amount of marijuana "reasonably related to the patient's current medical needs," but did not set specific limits.
The appellate panel overturned the conviction of a Los Angeles County man who possessed more than eight ounces of marijuana and ruled that the 1996 initiative bars the Legislature from specifying the amount a patient can possess. The case has divided medical marijuana advocates, with some arguing that the court should have left some standards in place to guide police and protect patients. The 1996 initiative, Proposition 215, allowed Californians to possess and cultivate marijuana for medical use with their doctor's approval. The court has interpreted Prop. 215 to provide broad protections for medical patients in criminal cases, but has not extended those protections to the workplace. Notwithstanding the law, the justices ruled in January that employers could fire workers who used medical marijuana away from the job, a ruling that advocates are trying to overturn in the Legislature.Wednesday's case began in 2005, when officers in Los Angeles County searched Patrick Kelly's home and found seven plants in his back yard, 12 ounces of marijuana in plastic baggies, and a doctor's note saying he needed marijuana for hepatitis C, back problems and other ailments. The prosecutor told jurors that Kelly was not a legitimate medical marijuana user because he exceeded the limits of the 2003 law. He was convicted of illegal possession and cultivation and sentenced to two days in jail and three years' probation. I hope it goes well too. I guess as long as I do what I think I should it doesn't matter about the outcome. The couple that rent from us that have been here for a couple years now know where we stand and we know where they stand on different issues. I told her that respect is a two way street. She thinks that's true.

Makes sense. They surely realize they have been very fortunate to find such an arrangement. With any sense at all, they wouldn't want to lose it through lack of respect for you that offered them this great opportunity to have so much space at such a reasonable price, and, depending on their point of view, what sounds to me like a great blessing to their family.I hope it all goes well for all of you.

Thank you. We really try. I think if we can put ourselves into the other person's situation and think about it we might look at their issue differently. Don't get me wrong I have a strong opinion about what I expect from someone who rents from us but in turn by being fair it makes it easier to get them to understand your point of view. It makes life more peaceful. How much money is too much or not enough? I don't know the answer to that.

You and Stick are, no doubt, among the jewels of humanity. Too many people have no desire to be fair to anyone. It goes against their greed. You treat others as you would like to be treated. That's good.

The reason we do the two rentals the way we do is because we feel it is fair. I sleep better when I believe that I have been fair during the day. Money is important but you can't buy self esteem. I made a mistake and said the children all have their own bedrooms. Two of the girls must share a room. There I feel better.

Sounds like quite the deal FoM
I'm still in complete shock that you are only charging around 500 per month for a house that size. You guys should be nominated for landlords of the year!

The people that are renting it have 5 small children. The children all have their own bedrooms now. They love it. It has walk in closets that are so big they have two doors. We put in a new sliding glass door with grids and new wall to wall carpeting which was installed yesterday.

That sounds very nice. That's a good price too. They just got done putting in HD DirecTV at the house I mentioned. They wired the whole house and the picture looks really good my husband said. Once we know if they like it we will get it too. I read forums about HD because I don't want to get it if it's still buggy. I don't want to trouble shoot a TV. Computers and aircards are enough for me. LOL!

4500 square foot home for $500?????
That's unbelievable! For that price I would have up and moved down to the big "O". That's incredible. We pay $700 for a tiny three bedroom home right in the middle of the city in Michigan. I'd give anything to be paying only so much for such a big place.

FoM...
It really depends on where in California you are! I rent, so I'm more familiar with rental prices, but here you can find a 2 br on an acre for $1,000 to $1,200. I'm paying $800 for a 4 br double-wide in one of the better parks and have picture postcard views- horse pasture, forest and a pond! Way better than some $1,000 mini-apartment in LA!

It is expensive in CA. I have no idea what an apartment would cost now. I know when my son lived out there in the early 90s he was paying $700 a month for a one bedroom apartment. It was so tiny too. If I had to pay more then a couple hundred dollars a month for housing it would be hard to do. We just rented a nearly 4500 square foot home (that includes a full basement) for a little over $500 a month.

That is one of the main things that is holding me
back from moving out this way. The cost of living out here is unbelievable. To have 25 acres out here would be quite pricey I'd imagine. If I do move out this way I'm going to have to talk some of my friends into coming along with me to rent an apartment to start out. That's the only way I can see it happening in the near future unless of course I win the lottery. lol

I don't know what a house would cost to buy in California with 25 acres but I can only imagine. I like living in an area that isn't expensive. When we bought the land in the late 70s we paid $3900 for 5 acre lots. Now they are $25,000 for 5 acres. I like the 4 seasons too. I am feeling better thank you.

Try to get a Californian to go back
our way and deal with the harsh winters, then we'll see who the wuss is. lol I agree it would be a little scary to experience one. But I do feel the benefits of living here outweigh the risks. And it's always nice to know I can always venture back to safe and sound Michigan if I want to. I do feel I would eventually miss the four seasons back home though. There is just something I love about seeing each season turn into another. And I'm glad to hear you are feeling better FoM.

California has such nice weather. I wouldn't want to live there because of the earthquake issues though. Earthquakes can wreck your home and insurance for earthquakes is very high. I like to feel solid ground under my feet. I'm a wuss I know. LOL!

I'm glad the weather is still beautiful
over there. Enjoy it while you can, because you know what is right around the corner :)And that's exactly what I'm trying to do here. Making sure I'm spending as much time as possible in this beautiful, sunny weather. I already have a better tan than I've had all summer long. lolI met some really cool people up in Oceanside today. I'm thinking I'm going to be fully medicated by sometime tomorrow. yay.The people out here seem so friendly. I don't think it's going to be much longer until I turn my "California Dreamin" into California Living.Everybody seems to be really impressed with the work we are doing for the medical marijuana movement back in Michigan. I wish I had brought some pamphlets to show some of the folks.Anyways, enjoy these sunny summer days while you can!

I heard that Ms. Berry's pregnancy caused her to postpone the Tulia Movie. I think they may have had B.B. Thornton signed to play the narc, Coleman. I wouldn't swear to it, though. Maybe they will get it back in to production. It's never too late to hear that true and all too common and outrageous story of the War on Drugs. Such treatment of black people has been common enough to be noticeable in Texas. It's a true tragedy that incidents like Tulia happen. But they do. Thankfully, there were enough people like Alan Bean and the Friends of Justice in and around that area that just wouldn't let them get away with it that time. And Hallelujah and rejoicing for that and all of them, too.

Hope hear anything about a movie about Tulia
seems something was said a while back with Haly Barry.today on C-Span Joe Califano was on taking calls and most were against the drug war-- one asked Joe about the Mayor that just had his two dogs shot to death in a botched drug raid as the Mayor was a victim of stolen id and said the drug war is out of hand -- ol Joe said he did not know anything about that-- which i find hard to believe.

Friends of Justice
Their story. http://friendsofjustice.wordpress.com/our-story/Excerpt: Friends of Justice began as an alliance of Baptist ministers, farmers, school teachers, meat packing workers, fork lift drivers, defendants and their family members. We were united by the conviction that the men and women accused by the government had been presumed guilty from the outset and were being convicted because they were unable to prove their innocence. The Rev. Alan Bean, a local Baptist minister, worked closely with the defendants to investigate the drug sting, write letters to the editor protesting the sting, gain the attention of the media, and recruit national allies like the Kunstler Fund for Racial Justice, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the American Civil Liberties Union.

It does seem
like they try to distract the people by making up lies and throwing out misinformation in order to create confusion among voters.I am trying to stay away from politics during my vacation but it seems like it's impossible. lolI'm going to head out to the beach in a little while to get a little surf & sun. It's already looking like quite a beautiful day here.I ended up finding my sherlock piece :) My sister had a little fun by making up that little lie. lolNow I must find a little herb to fill it up with. But being out here, I'm sure that won't be hard.Tonight I get chance to do some true babysitting as my sister is going out with her friends. It might be a struggle since my two year old niece is so attached to my sister and still a little shy. It will sure be interesting, I know that for a fact. How's the weather on your end?

One thing I do know is the Republican Party doesn't have anything going for it but to stir up hatred (which creates fear and fear is control) towards shiny happy people because shiny happy people have good priorities compared to them. Goodness and caring just can't win in their opinion. Corporate America is shuddering.

I would never be interested in anything that would try to bring down McCain either. I believe in a fair fight but not slinging dirt. For Those Who Are Interested
August 13, 2008Excerpt:Several of the book’s accusations, in fact, are unsubstantiated, misleading or inaccurate. For instance, Mr. Corsi writes that Mr. Obama had “yet to answer” whether he “stopped using marijuana and cocaine completely in college, or whether his drug usage extended to his law school days or beyond.” “How about in the U.S. Senate?” Mr. Corsi asks. But Mr. Obama, who admitted to occasional marijuana and cocaine use in his high school and early college years, wrote in his memoir that he had “stopped getting high” when he moved to New York in the early 1980s. And in 2003 The State Journal-Register of Springfield, Ill., quoted him responding to a question of his drug use by saying, “I haven’t done anything since I was 20 years old.” In an interview, Mr. Corsi said “self-reporting, by people who have used drugs, as to when they stopped is inherently unreliable.”Complete Article: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/13/us/politics/13book.html
