City Council Puts Pot Issue on Ballot

Colorado -- Denver voters will have the final say on whether the city should change its marijuana laws, but that didn't stop several City Council members from accusing pot activists of turning city elections into a farce. "You're trying to make a joke out of the electoral process in Denver," said Councilwoman Carol Boigan. "I think this is aimed at street theater and capturing media attention."
The council voted unanimously Monday to refer to voters a ballot initiative that would direct Denver police to make the possession of less than an ounce of marijuana "the city's lowest law enforcement priority." Backers of the proposed ordinance turned in several thousand signatures to earn a spot on the November ballot. Council members made it clear they believe the proposal will have little effect even if it passes, since state law bans marijuana possession. Even those who favor changing the nation's drug laws have found fault with the measure. "The war on drugs is as misguided as the war on Iraq," said Councilman Chris Nevitt, who compared the country's drug laws to the failure of Prohibition. "This issue needs to be taken to the state and federal level. Denver voters have already spoken." In 2005, Denver voters made the possession of small amounts of marijuana legal in Denver. Denver police, however, have continued to cite people who possess less than an ounce of the drug, saying they have to enforce state law. Denver resident Sara Tafoya told the council she was pulled over earlier this year because she was driving without her headlights on. The police searched her and found an eighth of an ounce of pot. Tafoya said she spent the night in jail and her car was impounded for more than a week. Tafoya said she asked for a trial on the charges, but decided to accept a plea bargain because she feared losing the aid that allows her to attend college if she'd been found guilty. Others told the council that marijuana was more dangerous than many people believe. "Marijuana is addictive. It has effects on brain development," said Shannon Mulcahy, a drug and alcohol counselor who works with adolescents. "It affects memory and concentration." Proponents of the ballot measure said they don't dispute that marijuana can harm some people, but said liquor is far more dangerous, and yet the council approved a contract with Coors Brewing Co. to sell beer at the Colorado Convention Center. "Alcohol leads to countless crimes in this city," said Mason Tvert, director of Safer Colorado, sponsor of the ballot initiative. "What message do you send when you hold hands with Coors?"Note: Initiative takes some heat before getting approval.Source: Rocky Mountain News (Denver, CO)Author: Stuart Steers, Rocky Mountain News Published: August 28, 2007 Copyright: 2007 Denver Publishing Co.Contact: letters rockymountainnews.comWebsite: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/Related Articles & Web Site:Safer Denverhttp://www.saferdenver.com/Report: Hick, 4 Council Members Smoked Pothttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread23288.shtmlCouncil Holds Nose, Puts Pot on Nov. Boigan is just disgraceful; who's making a mockery of the election process? Denver voters approved marijuana legalization, and she's still sending the cops to arrest them.I guess the joke's on people who thought this was a democracy! Just wait till Hilary gets elected, we'll have 2 dueling families, the Bush monarchy vs. the Clinton aristocrats - just the Bourbon dynasty in pre-Napolean France. Ha! That's a good one! Too bad we have to live it.Will Ms. Boigon toss out a dubloon as her stagecoach runs over the medical marijuana patients? Instead of "let them eat cake" it will be "let them pay $8000/month for GW Big Pharm Sativex"I just had a really interesting thought re: Mason Tvert. MPP is basically paying people to do what journalists used to do in the 60s and 70s. Look at the bit about the Convention Center & Coors. The only reason the reporter wrote about it is because he was spoon-fed the information by Mr. Tvert. They don't print anything that a PR person doesn't hand them, and the government has more propagandists than anyone!Investigative journalists aren't out there busting the chops of the politicians. The politicians have a free pass to lie endlessly. Look at Senator Hand Job there from Idaho.

I only can remember politics and religion. My Dad was Protestant and my Mother was Catholic so we didn't talk about religion. My Father was a Republican and my Mother was a Democrat so we never talked about politics. LOL!Stick and I were never into politics until recently so we never talked about politics. We feel much the same way about politics and religion though.

Dangerous things. Politics, Religion, and what was that other one?I got an automated poll telephone call the other day.One of the questions it asked was, "Could you ever marry someone with a different political point of view from yours?" Before I thought, I punched "Yes". Then I thought, "It's a really bad idea. It's not a good idea." I should have punched, "No". But the correct answer was "Yes. Could you? Dang right? I did. I wasn't that aware of that being the case when it happened...but I did. Things evolve. So, "Yes", "You certainly could."

No absolute confirmation but enough rumors to let us know it will be a 7 week tour. I keep looking. I know we will hear something around Farm Aid. It will have to be inside because it will be cold. The acoustics inside when we saw Greendale in Cleveland had me walking out the door about two feet off the ground. LOL! It was amazing. I'll never forget the sound. He ended with Roll Another Number For The Road.

When Neil sang Let's Impeach the President people cheered but some people at the Columbus concert got mean. I have only been to a couple concert and it was embarassing for me to see a fight over Bush no less in my state. Throwing a beer on stage at Neil blew me away.

If it acts like a nut...
I've been around hunters and people with guns and weapons all my life. No "normal" hunter, no normal person talks about killing anything, even animals that they hunt or raise for food like Nugent does. Some one tried to defend the way he behaves to me by saying it was just his "Persona" or stage act. "Persona", my derričre. Nugent has the "Persona" and all the appearances of a nut. So there is a real damn good chance he is a nut.No body in their right mind would have anything to do with a man that talks the way he does about killing and hinting at harming others, unless he is just as crazy as Nugent appears to be. It's not that they, people like him, don't exist, but I and most people I know, would tend to avoid anybody that acts like he does, in real life...in make believe life...and any kind of life, just out of common sense. If he acts like a disgusting nut...he might be one.It really is sickening, to me, that he's managed to align himself with the NRA. A vulgar nut is not my cup of tea, and a vulgar nut with guns, or blow guns, or crossbows, in my opinion, is someone to be avoided.Yuck. Life can be bad enough anyway...without people like that just making it worse. He's acting like he's mean and stupid and violent. He seems mean and stupid and violent. He might be mean and stupid and stupid. That's what I think anyway.

I don't own any but I can understand why you would want to burn them. My husband was going thru the channels and stumbled on to that Glen Beck show and Ted Nugent was on. I only saw the last couple of minutes and they were laughing and god blessing each other. It turned my stomach.

Who's making a joke of the electoral process???
Ms. Boigan, I hope you read this! "You're trying to make a joke out of the electoral process in Denver," said Councilwoman Carol Boigan. "I think this is aimed at street theater and capturing media attention."And if the voters pass this, what then Ms. Boigan? Is it still a joke when 80% of the voters say medical cannabis should be legal? When 60% or more of the voters support this bill? I think the joke will be on you when the votes are counted! And about that "street theater and capturing the media attention" remark, are you jealous that someone else is getting the spot light? Councilpeople get their every word reported, you already have the media's attention! I guess you just don't like sharing the limelight! And what is campaigning but street theater, posturing and spouting the latest politically correct lines? Ms Boigan, stop acting like a child who's throwing a tantrum to avoid to sharing the attention of others. Do you NEED to be the center of ALL the attention?

I worry about Obama. That threat brought back the memories of Bobby Kennedy's assassination. If something would happen to Obama I would totally give up. They've killed about everyone I have ever really liked.

The secret service protects Obama and Clinton
Nugent threatened the lives of these two candidates with machine guns in hand, and that is a helluva lot more threatening than an anti-bush t-shirt or bumper sticker. Why will the secret service show up at your door for the t-shirt or bumper sticker and yet let nugent get away with these felonious threats on the lives of these other people they're protecting?A cop is a cop, and none of them seem to be worth much any more. The Reverend Bud Green

Ted Nugent stepped way over the line on that one. Doesn't he know he can fire up a mentally disturbed individual to do harm to Senator Obama or the others? We are responsible for what we believe and for what we say.

Awesome day! OT: Now, let's call Clear Channel....
about Ted Nugent's' threats on Obama, Hillary, Barbara Boxers' lives!Ted Nugent: The ANTI-Cannabist!Here is the headline at Rolling Stone.comTed Nugent Threatens to Kill Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton During Vicious Onstage RantRenegade right-winger Ted Nugent recently went on a vicious onstage rant in which he threatened the lives of Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Decked out in full-on camouflage hunting gear, Nugent wielded two machine guns while raging, “Obama, he’s a piece of shit. I told him to suck on my machine gun. Hey Hillary,” he continued. “You might want to ride one of these into the sunset, you worthless bitch.” Nugent summed up his eloquent speech by screaming “freedom!”http://www.newscorpse.com/ncWP/?p=572This video, if someone is inspired by Ted, will he be held accountable? Like Pearl Jam being censored by ATT, the Dixie Chicks being banned from Clear Channel and country radio, and on and on, and this guy gets a pass, and Clear Channel doesn't see a controversy here, nothing here, keep moving,
so please give them a call!http://www.newscorpse.com/ncWP/?p=572http://www.clearchannel.com/Corporate/
