Hashish Could Alleviate Allergic Skin Disease

Israel -- A chemical found in the cannabis (hashish) plant can help the body's immune system alleviate a common skin disease called allergic contact dermatitis, according to a group of researchers from Israel, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the US. The group was led by Dr. Andreas Zimmer of the University of Bonn and included cannabis expert Prof. Raphael Mechoulam of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's School of Pharmacy. An article describing their research was published recently in the journal Science.
They used the "endocannabinoid system" to alleviate the skin disease. There was a clear protective role for the endocannabinoid system in contact allergy in the skin, suggesting that development of cannabis-like compounds based on elements produced from the plant could enhance treatment for humans. Allergic contact dermatitis is caused by reaction to something that comes in direct contact with the skin. Many kinds of allergens can cause allergic contact dermatitis. Most people are not sensitive to them, but in those who are, any exposure will produce a rash, which may become very severe. Allergic contact dermatitis affects about 5 percent of men and 11% of women in industrialized countries and is one of the leading causes of occupational diseases. In his earlier work, Mechoulam's research group in Jerusalem isolated two naturally occurring cannabinoid (cannabis-like) components - one from the brain, named anandamide (from the word ananda, meaning "supreme joy" in Sanskrit), and another from the intestines named 2-AG. These two cannabinoids, plus their receptors and various enzymes that are involved in the cannabinoids‚ syntheses and degradations, comprise the endocannabinoid system. These materials have similar effects to those of the active components in hashish and marijuana, produced from the cannabis plant. Research throughout the world has since shown that the endocannabinoid system is involved in many physiological processes, including the protective reaction of the mammalian body to a long list of neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In the Science article, the researchers explained how the endocannabinoid system serves as a major regulator of skin contact hypersensitivity in a mouse model. In this model, they showed, for example, that mice lacking cannabinoid receptors display exacerbated inflammatory skin responses to an allergen. Because the data indicate that enhanced activation of the endocannabinoid system may dampen the skin contact hypersensitivity response, the researchers administered cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a constituent derived from the cannabis plant, to the lab animals. They found that the THC significantly decreased the allergic reaction in comparison to untreated mice.Complete Title: Substance in Hashish Could Alleviate Allergic Skin DiseaseSource: Jerusalem Post (Israel)Author: Judy Siegel, The Jerusalem PostPublished: August 19, 2007Copyright: 2007 The Jerusalem PostWebsite: http://www.jpost.com/Contact: http://tinyurl.com/yy25z5Related Article:Role Seen for Cannabis in Helping Skin Diseasehttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread23260.shtmlCannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

My apologies if I seemed like I was nuts
earlier today. I was!I walked right into the middle of a hideously, hard headed teenager's temper tantrum. She had gone off to her room to text someone or was in the shower or something... my daughter hadn't come home from work and I had to find some safe place ....here! Thanks, guys. You are a blessing to me in so many ways...now that one!Anyway. I'm home now. And I hope it's getting better and not worse up there. It's a rock and hard place, mother/daughter situation. Whew! Thanks again. I'm still praying that people don't alienate themselves from each other to the point of it just being tragic.

With this child, I'm probably the best intervention outside of her mother. She is tough though. Thing is, she's not nearly as tough as she thinks she is.She's seventeen and she can do anything she wants, according to her. She's a life guard and I really do think she sits out in the hot sun too much. It's so hard being a teenager. Some have a harder time than others.I appreciate the prayers. It's good to have people to turn to when there's need of a few more prayers. It can't hurt and it really might help. I appreciate it.

What's wrong?
Hideous conflict between my granddaughter and her mother. Much grievance that's seeming to spiral out of control. I'm so afraid for my granddaughter and the choices she's making because of anger, misery, and rebelliousness. It's not drugs, thankfully, but it's just about everything else and it could go so badly for people I love and care about so much.

Thank you. I don't mind rain this time of year because I know it is good for the water table. We had a storm the other day that was bending big trees almost sideways. It got so chilly last night I almost wanted to start a fire in the woodstove. It's August! The weather has been very weird this summer. We never get flooding here luckily because we are the highest point around this area. I can't get over the flooding I've been seeing in different areas on tv. I wonder what the winter will bring? I bet it will be very cold and snowy this year. I'm just guessing though.Did you see Ice Road Truckers last night? It was really good. I liked the one driver Alex singing Amazing Grace.

can and should change the scheduling of cannabis. If they did, it would be legal and the DEA would have to abide by their ruling. Is that right? It seems so.

I don't think that talking about Hemp would do anything but give the Republicans and Rove and way to get them. Silence is golden when running for president. When a person becomes the president then Hemp can be added to the list and talked about. Republicans are mean and underhanded so being careful is wise I think.

Drugs can kill and that is my concern about young people who feel immortal. They need to understand the risks. This was supposed to be a fun day for these young adults and they met a terrible end. I didn't know for sure either who handles rescheduling. I checked out wiki, and found this tidbit:"The medical and scientific evaluations are binding to the DEA with respect to scientific and medical matters. The recommendation on scheduling is binding only to the extent that if HHS recommends that the substance not be controlled, the DEA may not control the substance.Once the DEA has received the scientific and medical evaluation from HHS, the DEA Administrator will evaluate all available data and make a final decision whether to propose that a drug or other substance be controlled and into which schedule it should be placed."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controlled_Substances_Actalso,"the Controlled Substances Act gives the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as successor agency of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, great power over rescheduling decisions. After the DEA accepts the filing of a petition, the agency must request from the HHS Secretary "a scientific and medical evaluation, and his recommendations, as to whether such drug or other substance should be so controlled or removed as a controlled substance." The Secretary's findings on scientific and medical issues are binding on the DEA. The HHS Secretary can even unilaterally legalize marijuana: "If the Secretary recommends that a drug or other substance not be controlled, the Attorney General shall not control the drug or other substance." 21 U.S.C. § 811bhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_rescheduling_in_the_United_StatesNot to leap to rash judgement, but if Mr. Kucinich does not receive the nomination for President, he would be an excellent director of HHS.

You said: I hope it helps and works to keep My children off hard drugs, away from too much booze and omit cigarettes from their lives.A parent teaching their children honestly like you are doing is the best deterrent for future hard drug, cigarette or alcohol use. Getting caught up in hard drug use can really mess up a child's life.

Me, too, GCW. Me, too.
"I want to stop government from harming My children. All children."I don't want them to despise authority. But the way it is now, how can they keep from it to some extent. It's so invasive. Like a fungus.I don't want them treated like criminals and have their hands bound behind their backs and carried to cages over any and everything. Murder, theft, assault not involving self defense are reasons to do those things to people, for the real safety of others, but not for what they might consume or smoke or what silly mistakes they might make. Don't allow them to use automobiles if they are an eminent and excessive danger to themselves or others. But arrest them for smoking or consuming something or buying and selling or trading, if it doesn't involve stealing? Making them criminals for things that you just don't want them to do... for your own reasons and fears... that don't involve real and eminent death and danger or hurting, really physically hurting someone else? For God's sake...no.
