Colorado -- More than 700 people gathered in Denver's Civic Center Park today as part of the national "4/20" rally to protest laws against marijuana. The Denver event held on April 20, or 4/20, at 4:20 p.m. drew high school and college students and others, mostly in their 20s. "It's a weed smoking festival," said Joe Smith, 18, who recently moved to Denver from Nevada. "I believe in the medicinal benefits of marijuana."
"Everyone came together to smoke marijuana and chill," said G.K. Hoovers, 20, of Aurora. "It's been cool. There were no problems." The rally also drew about 100 Denver Police, including the SWAT team, the mounted patrol, undercover members of the vice and narcotics bureau, the gang unit and other departments, said police spokeswoman Virginia Quinones. "Even though marijuana smoking isn't illegal in Denver, it's still illegal in Colorado," she said. Officers contacted people who were openly smoking marijuana and checked identification, said Quinones. Those with outstanding warrants for other crimes were arrested and the rest were given citations for possession and public consumption of marijuana. She said the number of arrests and citations wouldn't be available until later tonight. The crowd, many wearing leis of fabric marijuana leaves, was friendly and light-hearted. "I came on vacation to Denver for this," said Francine Popovich, 18, of Sedona, Ariz. "All of my friends at home are so jealous. Look how many people showed up. It's shows how many people want marijuana legalized." Some visitors to Denver wandered into the gathering by mistake, including Jim and Kathy Arthur of Iowa, who walked toward downtown after seeing the Art Museum. "It's our generation that started all of this," she said. "We're just beer drinkers," he said. "It certainly adds to our adventure."Complete Title: Hundreds Rally in Denver To Support Marijuana LegalizationSource: Rocky Mountain News (Denver, CO)Author: Deborah Frazier, Rocky Mountain News Published: April 20, 2007Copyright: 2007 Denver Publishing Co.Contact: letters rockymountainnews.comWebsite: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/CannabisNews -- Cannabis Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml

420 Is Becoming an Unofficial Holiday
Protest smokes up the joint
- john Goddard 2007-04-21 Matt Mernagh strictly followed every rule and regulation before publicly lighting his giant spliff. http://www.thestar.com/article/205701In addition to the Toronto 420 event, many other smoke-out rallies were held in Ontario and other Canadian provinces. In Hamilton the Hash Mob led a protest march from Ferguson Station, near the now-defunct Up In Smoke Cafe, to city hall. I caught the tail end of it after work. Radio and TV coverage was abundant this year after they seemed to largely ignore last year's efforts. In addition to interviewing the Pot Poet and Matt Mernagh, many songs and much radio banter, live musical events were billed as 420 Celebrations. I did make it to a 420 celebration, the reunion of the New Riders of the Purple Sage concert in Hamilton at Pepper Jack's. The music was great and the crowd was pleased. The Riders hadn't performed since 1974, so I didn't want to miss it. Although it was in a bar, many references to 420 consciousness were enthusiastically cheered by the crowd: that old favourite Panama Red got the party moving and the encore of Everybody Must Get Stoned was a great sing-along. The band played two sets, over 3 hours of live music. One of the band members said, "It's not just about getting high, it's about freedom." Words to live by.
Happy 420! We are reaching a wider audience through the support of some broadcast media, concert promoters, and the younger generation.

the city-state dispute

Anything that goes against these is a violation of state law. Those laws are STILL on the books...TODAY. I wonder how many Miami PD officers are willing to stand up and enforce THAT?

Yeah, I don't know if there are many parts of this country where it is so accepted.

A few of us went over at 4:20 and a fairly large people were there smoking and drumming and hanging out. That's about it. No speeches or anything, no big deal. Just people.

Vermont: News Brief from WCAX News
4/20 at North Beach
By Kate Duffy - WCAX NewsApril 20, 2007Burlington, Vermont -- It's April 20th, and pot smokers took time for the annual 4-20 observation. The day has traditionally seen rallies on college campuses pushing for the legalization of marijuana.UVM has cracked down on activity on campus in the past few years. So several hundred college students instead packed North Beach this afternoon. Most said they were there to enjoy the gorgeous weather, but when the clock struck 4:20, quite a few lit up a joint."We're always on the beach doing exactly the same thing as right now," said Harrison Hagan, a student at UVM. "No one seems to have a problem with it. Whoever runs the beach never has given us a hard time, we've never been kicked off the beach. As long as we clean up and leave the beach in it's natural form, it shouldn't be a problem."Police said no one registered complaints about pot use and no arrests were made.Copyright: 2007 WorldNow and WCAXhttp://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=6405842&nav=4QcS
