Re "Task force backs pot registry, cultivation rules, paper says," July 16: Three cheers for Attorney General Bill Lockyer. Unlike his predecessor, Lockyer is steering the state in the right direction on the medical marijuana issue.
The recommendation of a voluntary statewide registry with photo ID cards is an excellent way to help protect legitimate patients from arrest. The cards would also help save law officers countless hours of wasted time arresting, booking, confiscating, going to court and loosing against legal marijuana patients.Alan Archuleta,DavisRe "Punting on pot," editorial, July 16: I was puzzled by the proposal to establish a registry of "medicinal marijuana users." Where will proponents of this idea find doctors or patients foolish enough to put their heads in that noose? The attorney general is currently prosecuting a physician and two pharmacists accused of furnishing pain killers to suicidal patients. I was also amused that The Bee opined that such marijuana smokers should be required to take their medicine in private, lest they expose their sinful behavior to the public gaze. The registry would be of great value to law enforcement in prosecuting the drug war. It would provide a ready source of "usual suspects" to be investigated whenever a crime occurs in the neighborhood of a person whose name is on the list.Philip S. Kearney,SacramentoThe medical marijuana bill is not what Proposition 215 was about. Proposition 215 is working. The problem is police are not doing their job and finding out if the person is valid under Proposition 215. This bill was put together by law enforcement and the people who run some clubs. There was no one who needs to use marijuana just to make it though a day to ease the pain. SB 848 is not good for any of us. Steve D. Sallagoity,Citrus HeightsDuring the recent controversies over medical marijuana prosecutions in Placer County, I have been surprised by the absence of depression from the list of diseases that marijuana helps. Several of my chiropractic patients tell me that antidepressant prescription drugs don't work nearly as well as marijuana, but these people still try to get by on the pharmaceuticals because of their fear of getting arrested.Like many chiropractors, I'm not in favor of medicating any but the few most awful, life-threatening depressions. Chiropractors view pain, emotional or physical, as a friend telling us what needs to be changed and motivating us to get moving. Drugs just cover up the problem. However, for those who don't or can't take the time, get to a counselor, expend the effort, feel the pain and change what must be changed, or who have just drawn some really bad cards in life's game of chance, depression can be a life-threatening illness. Those people should have available the cheapest and most effective antidepressant medication. For many that is clearly marijuana.H.
