Santa Barbara, CA -- Two-thirds of city voters last week voted to make possession of small quantities of marijuana by adults the lowest police priority, but now the Council is pondering whether to enforce this. The people have spoken, so why should their public servants want to reverse the decision? Besides, as I understand it, dope smoking on private property is already pretty much a low police priority. If the Governator and feds want to do something about it, let them.
The ball’s in their court. The people have spoken. Similar measures have been passed in a couple of other cities with no crackdowns yet by the long arm of the law, backers claim. Voters may not have realized, however, that the law requires the City Council to send a letter to President Bush (along with other state and federal officials) advising him of the Santa Barbara law and asking him to get busy enacting similar federal legislation.Whether or not Bush ever inhaled of a leafy substance in his younger, wilder days, he seems unlikely to push the new Democratic Congress to ease up on dope-smoking, in Santa Barbara or anywhere else. “The Bush administration has made marijuana, medical or otherwise, the number one priority in their failed drug war,” said proponents of Measure P-for-Pot, which passed last week. Mayor Marty Blum, normally a reasonable sort, is insisting that the council should meet with City Attorney Steve Wiley about the burning issue of Measure Pot. “We might possibly take it to court,” she said, adding, “We do respect when people vote for something.” Aha! Democracy in action!Still, the council plans to meet December 5 in closed session over Measure Pot. But would that be legal under the Brown "secret meeting" Act? It allows closed-door sessions only in certain cases, such as personnel actions, real estate deals, and threatened lawsuits. Even if the council can make a case for secrecy, I think the voters would be interested in hearing the views of council members, right out loud at City Hall instead of after a decision is made. Some, I suppose, will observe that Measure Pot, mild as it may be, seems to be something of a quaint echo of some campaign from the 1960s. From what I see, even in little Santa Barbara, the social dangers of drunk driving (booze being legal) and abuse of prescription drugs (also legal) deserve major attention. Maybe the city moms and pops can work on that.Note: Going to Pot: How odd it is that the Santa Barbara City Council is fretting about a problem that doesn’t seem to be a problem?Complete Article: http://www.independent.com/opinion/2006/11/post_1.htmlSource: Santa Barbara Independent (CA)Author: Barney BrantinghamPublished: November 14, 2006 Copyright: 2006 by The Santa Barbara IndependentContact: letters independent.comWebsite: http://www.independent.com/Related Articles: Measure P Fires Up City Officialshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread22298.shtmlCommittee Lobbies for Marijuana Propositionhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread21632.shtml

For what it's worth, Berkeley is pretty often about ten degrees warmer than San Francisco. And since we still have that Pacific breeze, we can make good bread here. It's from the clouds, you know. Yeast rises with the sea, and lives in the clouds for awhile before falling back to land and creating life on the soil.

Thanks! That's one of my favorite songs! And favorite groups too!whig - That was a really stimulating version! 8^)I was looking for another song about San Francisco. I'm not sure what it was called, but the main phrase was, "Old child, young child, feel all right, on a warm San Francisco night." I can't remember who sang it. I'll keep looking. (Not that there are that many warm San Francisco nights, but the song as a whole was great!)I don't know how quick time got changed to my default media player. I'm trying to find out how to change it back to Windows Media, but so far, no luck.Watching those videos made me realize it's time for a full-blown peace generation revival! We're all addicted to something, whether it's chocolate or caffeine or sex. Cannabis itself does not addict, but you might become more aware of what you are addicted to. Lots of chocoholic cannabists. I drink tea but am re-evaluating my use of caffeine.

oh and this juicy little tidbit, too
Apparently, schools now have 'DrugWipe' where officials are taking swab samples off of kids' lockers without anyone's knowledge. I love the quotes from the article:"'It's just the right thing to do. It's the smart thing to do,' Freeman said. 'We want to make the curriculum flexible enough to teach toward the problem.'"Yeah the smart thing to do. Let's break down those children's wall of trust just a little further. You want to know why they're bringing weapons to school all the time? Because they're fighting back, they want to be left alone!!"But officials won't be using the test to bust individual kids, he said."Then what will it be used for? Please... The 9 most dangerous words in the English language = "We're from the government, we're here to help you."

Pete has a very good post today over at DrugWarRant. Apparently, the 6th Amendment was tossed in the shredder a few years ago and no one bothered to tell us about it.Someone seriously needs to come out with a nice, shocking, visually appealing documentary about the death of the Bill of Rights. This is getting to be a little unbearable.

my 22 cents
Perhaps the social order known as politics got the message that Americans sent through their votes. Perhaps the door will hit Mr. Rumsfeldt real hard in his ass on the way out.The regime change is now the 'good cops', and mainstream America is breathing a sigh of relief thinking that their 'power' 'made a difference' and now things will get back into some sane order of normalcy.Perhaps the fact that our planet is coming apart around us is now putting an edge of reality to the otherwise surreal emporers clothing business we've had to endure. Perhaps the suits remember that they are naked underneath. Then again perhaps not. Momentary gratification is a human given. Get a buck, and spend it today, even if how you got it, and how you spend it result in the death of a biosphere tommorrow. Business as usual. Conservative political puppets of the economic feudal system, wear the same clothes, speak the same twisted tongue, though they label themselves 'democrats' after that mythical 'democracy' that is always said but never done. The people truly have power, but the vote is a stifled, frustrated, and limited power which in our system of political weights and measures is easily swayed through the mere 'professional media production' the best of which money can buy.I voted for democrats, some whose demeaner actually scared me, their spirits so obviously caught up in the intrigues of power. Yet as weak as my vote is, it would have been a complete exercize in futility to actually vote for someone other than a democrat, because the republicans went completely over the edge, and we don't want to go back there. The herb has gained a lot of political ground, from where I sit. I recieved one of the first 'marijuana tickets' in California, one month after the first decrim law went into effect in the '70's, and have watched NORML, OMI, and HEMP for years. The Colorado failure was not as bad as they'd like to think, because when the votes are actually finished the percentage may be close to 45%, which though not a majority, is an indicator of a political trend. If we can hold off WWIII, and get our ecological act together (which would of course HAVE TO include hemp) we may survive as a civilization and species long enough to witness some system of representational government that is rooted in basic human reality, and not some fairy tale fantasy of Kings, wealth, and power.Perhaps not. Only time will tell.

I did not vote for torture. I voted for jobs. I voted against the worse alternative, another seat lost to the Republicans. I voted for an otherwise compassionate record. Cannabis was not an issue in my state this year, but I voted for candidates likely to support medical cannabis in the future. For me, not voting is not an option. I did vote against my Representative and my Governor because of their unrelenting opposition to cannabis including medical.I will send my Senator a "spank you" letter when I get the time to compose my thoughts and information clearly.

No benefit of doubt on the military commissions act.It was clear and certain what they were voting for. They authorized torture, and every one of them will be shamed from office if they do not recant. Even if they are on our side on the cannabis issue, like some Republicans have been, they are not to be trusted with authority.Even if it were a mistake, this is the kind of mistake that requires removal.

It is my aim to end all of this. There are those among us who doubt it is possible, and therefore seem to discourage even the effort. But why discourage it? Should we not see it through to the best of our abilities? And if our abilities are up to the task, it will be done, God willing.

I am seeing way more Pot Humor on TV. They did a skit with Rumsfeld rolling a joint and showed Nancy Pelosi telling a biker gay guy on SNL that he couldn't smoke and he said it's marijuana and she well ok.

I believe we have the best chance we have ever had. It won't happen quickly but as the new House and Senate get their sea legs we very well might see some positive changes. If they win in 08 I think the chances are really big that the drug war will be taken seriously and marijuana laws might be addressed.

Change in Congress and Drug War
I really don't expect the new House and Senate to do anything different, regardless of their own attitudes towards the drug war. They only act if they will lose significant votes if they don't act. Leaving the drug war as is won't lose them too many votes. That said, the new House is the most favorable for drug war changes in decades. I just received a summary of positions from MPP. Pelosi, whom I assume will be Speaker, is a very strong advocate of medical cannabis. John Conyers (D-Mich) is also a strong supporter of medical cannabis and is expected to be the chair of the House Judiciary. Dave Obey (D-Wisc) has called opponents of medical cannabis "Daffy Ducks", whatever that means. He'll likely be the chair of Appropiations. So the most powerful House members are all supporters of medical cannabis. Yeah!

Torture
How many thousands of rapes and beatings per year in our prisons? I'd say anyone who hasn't renounced our drug laws is complicit in torture on a mass scale. We don't call this the Inquisition for nothing.

Torture ...
Those who voted for and authorized torture will not be trusted with authority. Wish it was a true statement, but, torture-enabler John McCain wants to be the next President. I'm optimistic that we will reject him, but not positive it will happen.Speaking of enablers ......Judith Miller has a brain the size of a pecan, and it's filled with nothing but hotdog innards. I don't know this to be true; it's just a rumor.http://alternet.org/blogs/peek/#44300fifth story down ...]:-)

I don't care how you do what you do but you aren't prosecuting torture. That's up to those who will have that job. Even those of us who voted during this election don't have that right. I pray that good and fair people are put in charge.

Ok
My point is that nobody is going to avoid this issue by simply brushing it under the rug. Those who voted for and authorized torture will not be trusted with authority. Anyhow, I'm going home, so it will be a few hours at least before I'm back online.

War Predicated on Gateway Theory
The government would like us to believe that the war on marijuana is predicated on the Gateway Theory. The gateway is developed through early indoctrination and use of drugs from sweet cough syrup to oxycontin. Drugs are prevalent throughout all levels of Society. So they qualify their statement and say, "The Gateway To "Illegal" Drugs. An outright lie. The only reason marijuana is illegal is because a bunch of crass old men and women in Congress say it is. Ironically, they feel perfectly justified in jailing marijuana consumers wile they take their cold medications, re-uptake inhibitors, alcoholic beverages, caffienes and nicotines. They are truly, insane.

I will be prosecuting torture. War will be ended but the victims must be identified and given justice. Those who authorized and performed torture will recant or be exposed.

I believe the only way we should go is to bring them all to justice over Iraq. If nothing happens then no country in the world will ever believe we are good people. I want to be proud to be an American not ashamed like I have been since the invasion of Iraq.

I sure hope that Bush doesn't smoke pot because then if that is how a person acts then it should not be legal. I'm kidding about the legal part but he is too mean and hateful towards people in the states and world that he couldn't possibly be smoking or he would have at least a little sense.

"Bush and Schwarzenegger Big Potheads"
Yeah, go figure Pres. Bush smokes a lot of pot daily, judging from his press conference appearances and whenever he gets interviewed, he may even toke up just before to help him lie some more. I have a picture of Arnold smoking a nice joint although he does not toke on a daily basis anymore. So we have a 70 year witchhunt for marijuana smokers and suppression of (medical evidence) facts about marijuana's medicinal properties, research on the beneficial effects of cannabis is stopped altogether and only research showing negative effects is allowed by a country whose president is is a daily pot smoker. Go figure!
