July 26, 1999D.C. Appropriations bill is scheduled to go to the full House as soon as tomorrow (7/27). Rep. Bob Barr (R-Ga.) is planning on introducing an amendment that would prevent the District from spending any money on certifying the vote on last year’s medical marijuana initiative, Initiative 59.
The initiative passed overwhelmingly according exit polls. No one knows the results of the election because this same provision was inserted in last year's Omnibus Appropriations bill at the last minute. This provision was rejected by the Appropriations Committee last week because it was seen as anti-democratic and authoritarian, but Rep. Barr is determined to prevent the results of the election from becoming public. WHAT TO DO 1) Call or email your Representative today and tell him/her to vote 'no' on any amendment to the D.C. appropriations bill that would prevent the vote on the D.C. medical marijuana initiative from being counted. 2) You can find out who your representative is, and his/her phone number by going to:http://www.house.gov/writerep/and entering your state and zip code. You can also call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and tell the operator your zip code. 3) Feel free to use the talking points below. TALKING POINTS Medicinal Marijuana Initiative -- The provision of the D.C. Appropriations bill that prohibits the District from counting the votes on last year’s medicinal marijuana initiative is un-American and anti-democratic. District residents should have the same democratic rights as citizens in other states with the initiative process. -- The House Appropriations Committee rejected this provision last week. The full House should do the same. -- If Congress wants to arrest sick people in the District and deny them the medicine they need to live, then they can overturn the initiative within 30 days after the votes are counted, as prescribed by current law.
