Don't Hold Your Breath for Sense About Hemp

Editorial by The Times-Standard

California -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto of a bill to legalize the growing of industrial hemp as a valuable -- and non-intoxicating -- cash crop is a perfect example of federal control run amok . . . as if we didn't have plenty examples of that in California already. The legalization of hemp makes sense for a lot of reasons, both economically and environmentally. It grows in all kinds of conditions; serves as a rotational crop, refreshing soil nutrients; and requires no pesticides or herbicides.
Hemp products are common -- it's in clothes, paper, food, and even auto parts. America's Declaration of Independence is said to have been written on hemp. But much of it is imported from China and Canada. North Dakota is the only state that allows its growth for that purpose. Studies have estimated that yields of $320 to $600 an acre are possible with hemp cultivation -- nothing like the profit margin estimated from the illegal grows for which Humboldt County is so famous (or infamous). But then a hemp farmer shouldn't risk a prison term -- except that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has convinced the governor that there is no legal distinction between hemp and marijuana, which contains THCs (tetrahydrocannabinols), which provide the euphoric effect of pot. ”Unfortunately, I am very concerned that this bill would give legitimate growers a false sense of security and a belief that production of 'industrial hemp' is somehow a legal activity under federal law,” said Schwarzenegger in vetoing the bill. It was clear from his comments that he believed in the vast benefits of the bipartisan measure for California's farmers, but was intimidated by the knee-jerk drug-war lobbyists. It has become clear that any common sense in changing the hemp laws must come at the congressional level -- but don't hold your breath. Yes, that is the person he mentioned. I was really busy so I didn't watch the whole debate but was trying to listen and I heard that comment. I guess where I am from we don't say certain things but that's how I was raised.

He was referring to Sam Houston, I believe, who reputedly used opium, for 'old war wounds' or recreation, I don't know. This might have been Kinky's rejoinder against accusation of his own use of substance(s). It is useful to put drug use in its historical context, though the comment did seem a little out of left field, I agree.

I don't know what to say. Sometimes a good person can shoot themselves in the foot and maybe didn't even mean what he said but he also called some person a heroin user that was I think a Texas governor. I didn't know why he would say that even if it was true. We shouldn't volunteer hard to handle information unless we are pressed to do so. At least that's how I think.

Kinky's comments from H.T. are terribly racist. Generally, I enjoy political debates as theater, and free-thinking independents for their different slant on the 'what-is-taken-for-granted' but I am thoroughly disappointed that he would spew such hate and dismiss it as humor. Not funny at all.

We have a lot of Republicans that agree with ending cannabis prohibition. I don't favor them and it does not hurt our cause to disagree, because their advocacy is for their own reasons and not because they want us to like them.I will talk to them in a proper setting but not when and where it isn't appropriate, I guess I should say. I don't want them in positions of power and authority.

Texas debate with Kinky Friedman
Kinky is quite the iconoclast - a breath of fresh air in 'polyticks'. I especially liked two of his ideas - Willie-fuel for state vehicles, and workers' cards for immigrants as an alternative to the 900(?) mile fence. For those who missed it, the debate will rerun at 11:00 PM eastern tonight, 12:00 central on C-SPAN1. There will probably be a webcast (RealPlayer and Windows Media Player) at the same time. I thought the Democrat, Congressman Bell also represented himself well.Notice how the Republican incumbent spun around to avoid Kinky's handshake at the end? LOL!

"tie-dyed heart."
Last time I kept the baby, she had the most beautiful tie dyed onsie ( those little snap on one piece shirt and bottom things)on. It was so precious and vivid and it had a golden heart with beautiful tie dyed effects radiating from it. I wore tie dye that day, too...so we could keep up with each other. She's crawling and exploring now...and I had such an extra measure of joy in watching her with that little outfit on.I kept singing to myself, "Got me searching for a heart of gold..."It was a lovely, tie-dyed experience.I'll always regret that my camera was out of commission that day.

Glad you liked it too. I really hope that we will see a strong push into new energy. We have talked recently about solar energy but that would probably cost a lot of money. We were talking about our woodstove with the men who are working here. I told them I priced new wood stoves and they were really high. They said our stove will last as long as the house does. I'm glad they don't need to be replaced. We really do need to find more fuel alternatives.

hey FoM good one-tie-dyed heart.
a great bumper sticker. did anyone see the History Ch on Sept 20 between 8-9 pm it was named Renewables. It was a fast paced 10 min spot on wind- solar- wave- and bio fuels .the Ethanol segment featured researchers at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden Co. Where the feed stocks for converting cellulose in to sugars then distill it into Ethanol. The feed stock that was mentioned was Switch Grass which is a fast growing year around plant that can be grown in most climates here in the USA. The researchers said that one acre of Switch Grass can produce 1,150 gals. With 25 cents a gal for the industral enzymems. How much tonnage per acre was not mentioned, nor was how much cellulose the Switch Grass is composed of . Like Hemp at 77% cellulose.Jack Herer if you have figures on this it will be interesting to see how much can be made on Ethanol and what price a Gal is worth.
Up in Canada since 96 they have had the good luck of growing Hemp and surly have up to date records. In Kalamazoo MI this summer at WMU James Woolsey
Ex CIA Dir. said that the Tech on converting Cellulose Ethanol is here and that Canada will have the first plant soon. The new bio factorys are going to offer new jobs on and off the farms, for cleaner air, water, to bio-degradable products that have still to be thought up. Gm and Ford can scale down the Ethanol Engines to smaller trucks and cars that will help the people get better gas mileage. 'buying local less imported oil Please Mason of 44 in CO. if you can find that NREL researcher on the History CH and promote the next generation of Bio Fuel, oh ya the Ex Cia Dir is a member of the North American Hemp Assocation. Mr. Woolsey says for the good of the Nation we must grow Hemp.Any reconition of the value of Cannabis and the effort to save as much of the seed from being destroyed will help all.

And damn if it didn't happen. And now this.Cannabis, with its myriad industrial applications, is a direct threat to the petrochemical industry's stranglehold on the economic life of America.
