Marijuana Measure Falls Short for Fall Ballot

Oregon -- Talk about a buzz kill. Although they paid petition circulators $94,000, organizers of an effort to make marijuana crimes Portland's lowest law enforcement priority failed to gather enough signatures for the November ballot. The city auditor's office ruled that the group calling itself Citizens for a Safer Portland turned in 31,623 John and Jane Hancocks -- more than the 26,691 they needed to qualify. But the city elections officer found that several hundred sheets, containing 4,449 signatures, were not properly dated and signed.
In the end, the city gave the group credit for just 27,174 signatures. So initiative organizers weren't surprised when a random sample showed too many of those were invalid, in most cases because the signers weren't registered voters. Petition gatherers typically try to compile thousands more signatures than they need to weed out duplicates and people who aren't registered. Chris Iverson, one of the effort's organizers, says his campaign team collected more than 40,000 signatures. They weeded out some 3,000 duplicates and another 3,000 from people who signed but did not live in Portland. The bigger problem was with all those discarded circulation sheets. "The state rule says that if the signature on the circulation sheet doesn't match the signature in the voter registration database perfectly, they throw it out," he said. "A lot of the people gathering for us used shorthand or their initials, because they were doing so many of these sheets. It was obvious it was the same person -- we had W-4s and all kinds of legal documents to prove it -- but because the law is so exacting, we lost those signatures." Iverson, who also ran for City Council earlier this year, says the law is unfair toward grassroots campaigns, which rely more on volunteers and newcomers to the petition business. But he says he now knows how to run a successful petition campaign. "The next time, I won't make any mistakes," he said. "The way I see it, we got two-thirds of the way there. We're probably going to try again." Supporters of the marijuana initiative say police officers should spend their time fighting serious and violent crimes, not marijuana-related ones. Ballot measure organizers raised $126,259 -- almost all of it from the Washington D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project. Portland Police Bureau leaders have noted that marijuana already ranks low on their priority list. Election - Improperly signed and dated petitions disqualify several thousand signatures. I just cannot understand, how this republican taliban can continue to think the way they do, how can they justify in mind and spirit, the locking up of children for using cannabis? How can they justify in mind and spirit, the locking up of sick and dieing people? This is a terrible thing that these people do, and it will come back and bite them in the ass.Can these people take their paycheck to what awaits them beyond the grave? You do believe in a grave?

Many from that era in music were what I call liberated Christians. Some went to Woodstock and smoked Cannabis and took LSD but they loved God. There often came from a Catholic background or Jewish background.

A Beautiful Song
You can download a song that Scott McKensie recorded and it was written by John Phillips. It's called "We've Been Asking Questions" and is one of the last songs written by John Phillips before his death in 2001. http://www.scottmckenzie.info/we'vebeenaskingquestions.wmahttp://www.scottmckenzie.info/

in that mean time
Benjamin Michael Nauss, 20, of Spring, was charged with delivery of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony punishable by a sentence of 2-20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. He was also charged with delivery of marijuana, possession of a prohibited weapon and money laundering, which are all third-degree felonies, punishable by a prison term of 2-10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Demetri Umar Singh, 24, of Conroe, was arrested at another location. Singh was charged with money laundering of an amount more than $20,000 and less than $100,000, a third-degree felony.
At the same location, SIU arrested Celeste Rentiers-Broughton, also known as Celeste Kelly, 45, who was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony, and possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to 180 days and a fine of up to $2,000.
Broughton's brother, Johnny William Thompson, 43, and her son, Jason Miles Broughton, 18, were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.
According to SIU Lt. Philip Cash, the SIU began the day by executing a search warrant on West Stedhill Loop off of Texas 242, near The Woodlands. The resident, Demetri Singh, was not home, but entry was made and approximately 2 pounds of marijuana was seized, along with about 100 ecstasy or MDMA pills. By law, officers are required to leave a copy of the search warrant behind for the resident. Oddly enough, the same copy left at the West Stedhill Loop residence turned up later that evening at a residence on Overlake Drive off of Budde Road.
"We were executing another search warrant around 6 p.m. when we ran into the owner of the residence on Stedhill who was found to be in possession of $1,000 cash in $100 increments divided with rubber bands," Cash said. "We also found a copy of the search warrant we executed earlier at his home in his possession."
Using rubber bands to divide money in increments of $100 is common among drug dealers, he said. That factor, coupled with what was allegedly found in Singh's home and information SIU received regarding drug trafficking led to the money laundering charges.
Singh's wife and newborn baby were also present, Cash said. "That information was forwarded to the District Attorney's office," he said.
The Overlake Drive home was searched and the owner, Celeste Rentiers-Broughton, was arrested along with her brother and her teenage son.
"Marijuana was found in every bedroom and a small amount of cocaine was also found in one of the bedrooms," Cash said.
In addition to Singh's wife and child, two others who were present were checked and released, Cash said.
After the search of Singh's home and before the search warrant was executed at the Overlake Drive residence, Benjamin Michael Nauss was arrested during an alleged parking lot drug sale.
Cash said the arrest occurred around 4:50 p.m. near the intersection of Budde Road and Sawdust Road.
"He delivered approximately two ounces of cocaine and less than four ounces of marijuana," Cash said.

Other Democrats can now oppose the war openly without having to fear that Lieberman's pro-war pro-Bush sanctimoniousness thrown in their face to respond to by interviewers. In fact by being such a bad sport about losing, Joe is helping them be even dismissive of himself.

The nice thing about NO FORCING is that we can disagree about what the final outcome will be and how it will be best to achieve it, because everything we are doing whether the same or different is voluntary and it's just a matter of persuading one another by peaceful means.I think the socialist revolution idea has problems and I could explain them in detail to you but I don't think CNews is the place for me to write long articles about political economy. But the bottom line is we are still on the same side that the current circumstance needs to be replaced and it has to be based on love and peace, not war.

No forcing.
No, FoM. All Workers keep what they own. I mean Corporate or Foreign owned assets in America would become the Wealth of the Nation, not owned by a handful of Fascists, and NO foreign ownership of ANY American Land, corporation, or Natural Resources. It would give incentive for ALL Nations to become self sufficient, and All Workers to keep working to keep sharing the wealth, and creating great Nations which care for each other. There will be nations not capable of being self-sufficient, and will need to barter with Nations with excess. Spread the EXCESS and there will be no NEED. Share and there will be no shortage. Whig, when the alternative to this new hoped-for society is "nucular-fishin'", I don't see much FORCING society to change. I think we all see the need for it. Designing that change may have to be done in place. Oil shortages will rack this nation like no one suspects. We will be forced to change, like it or not. Kinda strange thinking we will be forced to Love one another and get along or die. It's been our only choice all along, we just haven't been called on it yet. But it's comin'...Toke.

Knowing landlords
And I don't mean good ones but there are a lot of bad ones out there and they do what they can get away with. I know it happens and it probably goes something like this. The woman who is on a very poor income if any to begin with falls behind in her rent, she can't make it by the end of the month, whatever. She has to tell the landlord she'll be late, and he gives her an offer she can't refuse -- or at least it can be impossible for her to refuse especially if she has dependents and she can't allow her refusal to put them all out on the street.

If we have health problems in the future we will be able to sell it and get by better then if we had rented our whole life. Why would people work hard if there wasn't some dream to keep them going? We didn't have a down payment. That's what is so good about FHA. We had to put down $250 for settlement costs and pay $75 a month. As my husband's income went up the highest it would go was $138 a month. We never would have been able to own our own home without FHA. It is for people who don't have much money.

whig, I do
want to know your ideas. I agree with the land thought. Immediately on take over, all land and property except immediate personal property would become the Nations. All foreign investments and ownership of American land would be forfeit and ownership returned to the Nation's Common Wealth. There would be no need for "Welfare" because all would be payed or credited in some way EQUALY for their Work. Those proven to be unfit to hold physically demanding work, would be directed to, or create an area of "work" suitable to that person. Basically, what you are doing now is what you will be doing then, until some method of choice is made available to you for change in the future. All corporations would force their CEO's to adjust their outrageous incomes to only a percentage above those who actually do the work. Any excess corporate profit would be funneled to the Nations Common Wealth. All health care for All Americans would be paid for out of these funds. If we spread the EXCESS equally, there will be no NEED. If all nations do this simultaneously, they would have instant sovereignty, with no need to fight for what you can no longer own in a foreign Nation. For our need of what others have, we would have to barter, not buy. I may be jumping in and out of communism and Marxism and other previously failed governments with these ideas. But what worked before, won't work again. Peace. Toke.

Not a lot of people even have a downpayment for a house saved up, and in a lot of places rents are too high to save much of anything. Unless you are very fortunate most people don't wind up owning a home mortgage-free in their lifetime.

I know how we bought our first house and it was an FHA home and that gave us a starting point. After 7 years we were able to sell it and take the profit and buy our land and then build. I don't understand why more people don't do it that way. Maybe I don't understand outside of how we did it.

If you wanna know my ideas, the land tenure system is what most needs to be reformed. The fact that a small number of wealthy families control most of the valuable land in the world, and in the US. Not to mention that foreign investors own a sizeable chunk in some places. We end up that we're paying rent to live in our own birthplace, to someone else who never had to work a day in his or her life but inherited title to the land. That is what happened in old Europe and that is what the American colonists were running away from when they settled here, but then they recreated the same system over here and it just ends up being the same problem again, just with new owners. We can't keep building the same damn thing over and over and expect it to work better this time. We have to build better. We have to share the land rent and let people live where they can support themselves without going into debt.

Exactly, whig!
A new system completely. No connection to the old way of "governing", and that IS what they call it. That is why I emphasize the Workers. The Energy that has run this system for so long, and so hard, and been put up so wet and cold by these Industrial Slave owners now selling to foreigners what our, THE WORKERS, and our ancestors have built for so little long term compensation. Workers include police and military, which both would be completely reformed, but not politicians, unless they have a proven voting record and background as standing for Truth, Humanity, and Compassion. The Intelligence Agencies would have to remain, but purged of any and all who knowingly participated in acts of terrorism against ANY people of the world since 1900. All we need for the new EXISTENCE is the infrastructure which already exists, and guess who know how to maintain and repair these infrastructures? That's right! US! All violent Religions would have to learn their way doesn't work anymore. Besides, if either side in these so called Holy Wars obeyed their GOD, they would be laid back, tokin', loving this creation we have been GIVEN just like we do, and not warring at all, so where does the Holy fit into these Holy Wars? All wars must end. NO exceptions. Then our "Reformed" military would be phased out as the other nations phase out theirs, the sooner, the better. One other thing. The Elite would no longer exist. Their wealth, worthless if the workers refuse to build or maintain it, the police refuse to enforce lies for it, and the military refuse to bomb for it, would slowly be absorbed at their death through a fund which transfers their wealth not to their families, but to the Fund For Humanity, which we will all contribute to, and benefit from, according to our Talents, and our Work, which we will be free to expand on in a natural, not rushed or stressed, pace. Peace, bro. Toke.

I'd rather we build a different kind of system and not just try to take over the one we have today. The problems with the current system are structural, built in from the foundation. Not that it was a bad system when it was constructed, it could have been better perhaps but it needed a lot of compromises to make it work at all, or people wouldn't have agreed and there would have been war between the states just as soon as the secession from England was accomplished. So the founders built in things like slavery and 3/5 rules and a lot of other things that we've been gradually trying to address socially and otherwise to end. But there is still racism and a slave owning mentality present in the corporate power structure.I can't stress enough how great I think the CAN project is and the importance of festivals like this (Wonders of Cannabis) everywhere, to build a network of people who care about things that you do and that want to build a better world together. Not through war but through love.If cannabis is free then the people will be free because we will demand freedom and we will understand what it means to be free. We will not be satisfied to be given scraps and told to accept them. We will not end with a system that perpetuates slavery or starvation for anyone. We will not win by replacing the old boss with a new boss, but with the ending of the system of bosses itself.

I understand what you are saying. That is why if we look back over the centuries the poor and oppressed have risen up and revolted and then things change. No matter how peaceful its intentions violence will occur. I think of how Rosa Parks just refused to listen and go to the back of the bus and all the things that happened because of her simple I don't want to do it anymore protest. Neil said before he sang Ohio at one of the concerts on this tour something like Thank God there isn't a draft because I don't want to have to write another song like Ohio. There were no guns on that fateful day just unarmed students. I think the voting of Lieberman out was the beginning of a miny revolution using politics as the means of protest. These really are the worst and best of times. We will see the separation of the good from the bad very clearly I think.http://faculty.smu.edu/dsimon/Music/CSNY%20-%20Ohio.Mp3

RZ, all
Want to know which party we should vote for? Stay tuned. There will come a day when we, as a nation of workers, will take the Tyrannical State down. At that time, we will install OUR people in positions of power. That means that every politician in office today, from the Selectident we have now, to the mayor of America's smallest town, regardless of Party, WILL BE REPLACED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE WORKING PEOPLE OF AMERICA, if they don't represent us now. Now, in order for that to happen, the people must be massively on the same page, at the same time. Right now, there are too many factions, pulling in too many different directions, for any of this to be co-ordinated. I could set here and tell you how to form a revolution, or you can read it in a book, but either way, and we all know this, revolution is the only way to change a tyrannical government. Every revolution has a certain amount of violence. That is a given. And in a peaceful revolution, which ours must SURELY be, innocent lives will be lost, injuries will occur, and a certain amount of chaos will prevail. Face it. We are the AMERICAN PEOPLE. The world (And God too, if you please) has judged us and will continue to judge us, according to the actions of the "Leaders" we put in office. We, The People, now know we have corrupt leaders, corrupt agencies, corrupt Industries, and a corrupt method of our votes being counted, or not. Just the way a Tyrannical government likes it. They will not change it, so who does that leave it up too? In the mirror is your answer. In the mirror is your courage, your honor, your answer.MASSIVE SOCIAL UPRISING. Do not be afraid to say it, do not be afraid think it. It has happened in this country before, and of necessity, it will happen again. The people need no leaders. When left the F**k alone, we tend to get along quite well. It is when we allow an outside influence to divide us, that we become conquerable. In this case, the outside force is the INSIDE JOB. The coup, 2000.I opened two more Workers eyes today. Whether they saw what I showed them or not, I can't declare. But I shined two double ought barrels of truth into their eyes and ears. They looked absolutely stunned. Be very careful when you witness truth, your witnessee may not be accepting it at the moment. I'll know as time goes by what the truth has done to these two. But I know I forced them to THINK.Wage peace on war. END CANNABIS PROHIBITION NOW!

It is a way of non-violence. Also, Tai Chi and Kung Fu are meditations in action. They are meant for self-defense, not aggressive offensive attack. Tai Chi uses no weapons except the limbs of the human body. Tai Chi is a slow rhythmic activity which can prepare the body when attacked to respond by ducking and blocking blows and kicks. Kung Fu does use some simple weapons, like a staff, in training and, if necessary, in self-defense. Kung Fu does not use guns or any explosive devices. Being ready to defend a temple or a village is part of the role of a peaceful warrior in the Taoist faith.

The Writing Is On The Wall
Now Lieberman will run as an "independent" even after the folks of Connecticut have given him the boot in the primary! There is nothing independent about him as you can practically see the strings pulling that neo-con,war-mongering puppet! The more I think about it the more I believe Lieberman will siphon more votes from the republican candidate,Alan Schlesinger, than from Lamont. But watch and see if the mainstream media goes on and on about how Lieberman will siphon Lamont's vote. That could be indicative of a ploy to keep the polls close until election time when the neo-cons and Diebold can work their magic. That strategy has worked for them before.FoM, that's very interesting about Bush wanting control over the National Guard in "emergencies". Imho, the neo-cons now see the writing on the wall with Lieberman going down in the primary. If they lose power there will be so many investigations it will make Bush's impeached head spin! Their backs are truly against the wall and they will do whatever they must to maintain power and advance the PNAC agenda. With awareness of the 9/11 inside job spreading like wildfire, another terror attack won't go over to well with the masses so the neo-cons want to make sure the National Guard is on their federal leash. It's too late though. I know several folks in the National Guard and they say pretty much everyone they serve with already knows about 9/11 anyway and they want the Bush regime out as soon as possible! What is Bush Preparing For?

Prohibition Kills Again
On the evening of Friday, August 4, a 22-year-old Boulder-area man suspected of growing marijuana was killed by the Taser of a Lafayette police officer following an investigation by the Lafayette Police Department in conjunction with the Boulder County Drug Task Force.Family members of the man, Ryan Michael Wilson, are rightfully upset by what they believe to be law enforcement's excessive use of force in detaining the 132-pound man who they say "could never hurt anyone." They clearly do not think the 11 small plants he was allegedly growing in a field warranted such treatment by police, and we could not agree more.Yesterday, SAFER released the following statement:We are saddened by the tragic death of Ryan Wilson. While many of the facts of this situation remain unknown, it appears as if a young man was killed because he was allegedly growing a few marijuana plants in a field. This use of lethal force -- regardless of whether it was supposed to be "non-lethal" or "less-lethal" -- was in response to the possibility that he was growing a non-lethal plant, and it is utterly unacceptable. No act could more clearly illustrate the failure the marijuana policies in this state and in this nation. We arrest, prosecute, jail, and sometimes even kill people
for using or possessing a substance that is inarguably less harmful than alcohol. This would be an irrational policy even in a nation where alcohol was illegal.
But in a society where we tolerate and even celebrate the use of alcohol, it is simply absurd. We did not know Ryan, and we do not necessarily know all the circumstances surrounding the incident this past weekend. But we do know the government's war against
marijuana is responsible. We send our best wishes to Ryan's family and friends, and we will continue to fight to end marijuana prohibition and such preventable
tragedies under the guise of protecting people.

Third State To Run Marijuana Initiative This Fall
From KMGH ABC 7:Voters Will Likely Decide Whether To Legalize Pot StatewideDENVER -- Voters could be deciding on whether to legalize marijuana statewide this fall.Members of the group Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation dropped off 129,000 signatures at the Secretary of State's office Monday morning. The signatures of 68,000 registered Colorado voters have to be verified before the measure can be placed on the ballot."The fact that we collected nearly twice as many signatures as are required under statute highlights the widespread support for ending the madness of marijuana
prohibition in Colorado," said SAFER Campaign Director Mason Tvert. The measure, if approved by voters, would make possession of one ounce of marijuana legal in Colorado for those 21 or older.SAFER helped get a similar measure on last fall's ballot that made the same amount of marijuana legal in Denver. Initiative 100 was approved by a majority of Denver voters and made the city the first in the country to vote to remove all penalties for private adult marijuana possession. However, state authorities had said Denver's Initiative-100 was virtually meaningless because of state and federal laws that make even small amounts of marijuana illegal.Tvert said even though Denver voters had expressed their opinion that a small pinch of pot should be legal, people were still being arrested and prosecuted under state law and he wants that to stop. The statewide proposal would get rid of the state's prohibition of marijuana and allow cities to make the rules about pot use."Last year's victory in Denver clearly demonstrated the support we're receiving in the state Capitol," Tvert said. "But tens of thousands of signatures poured in from Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and other areas of the
state outside the Front Range. This just goes to show that regardless of Colorado citizens' political persuasions, many agree that punishing adults for using a substance less harmful than alcohol is an absurd waste of time, money and life."The state's attorney general, John Suthers, does not buy the argument that pot is safer. He and the governor feel the measure would be defeated in the fall. Colorado
House Speaker Andrew Romanoff -- a Denver Democrat -- opposes changing the state law. He thinks drug use in the state is already too high and said the matter would wind up in the courts.

I hope all war-loving politicians have a similar destiny to what I think is about to become his. I also hope that what is happening to him is a strong message to all Democrats who try to play both sides of the fence and betray what their party is ostensibly supposed to be about (compared to Republicans anyway... I know that there's not really that much difference between the parties at this point in time, but perhaps that could even change).

Sounds like it went great. I was at the Wonders Of Cannabis last year, and it was quite nice. Got to see Tommy Chong do some stand up. That's where I saw Rick Steves speak also. I wonder if it will be just like last year... it seemed to be just the stage with speakers, and then a whole lot of vendors. Not that that was insufficient, it was nice to have such an event happening at all and it was great to see it happening so openly. It was also a good illustration, to me, of how things change magically when you use the word cannabis instead of "marijuana." Had they called it "Wonders of Marijuana", I can just imagine how it would have created a problem and maybe not even been allowed to happen. Anyway I'm glad it went well at the CAN thing... You know, I always wondered why they don't give us a day off on election day? I was reading that article from the link below, and it seemed like a lot of people were only in line at 6 am because they had to be. I mean if every vote counts and our votes are so important, why don't they give us a day off so we can go? If they're worried about a drop in 'worker productivity', why not have it on Saturday or Sunday? I bet it would double our turnout rate, and it would cut down on the number of absentees that could possibly be thrown out. I wonder how many people are out there that don't vote simply because they can't make it to the polls in time?

I saw our country highjacked by people that money became their god. Our music had a message. Our values were peace, love and understanding. Then it all started to change. I remember feeling like it all was becoming plastic and substance and values were being cast to the wind. Everything became for the individual not for society. Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country was wonderful to hear when Kennedy said it. Then it became all corporations becoming our country and religious extremists jumped in for their take.

You and your generation accomplished what you could and you did it fine, believe it or not. You planted the garden. If you expected that the garden would grow overnight, well that is just not how nature works. It takes time, water and sunshine and care, before the flowers even begin to sprout. Here in Berkeley the garden is flowering now and the folks here are tending the garden and we're still in early harvests. My generation hasn't accomplished much yet, especially compared to yours.

You are the kind of person that gives me hope for the USA. When I decide it's time to start rocking in a rocking chair to Rockin in the Free World I want to know it will all be ok. You and your generation have a huge task ahead but I trust that you can accomplish what we couldn't.

The only way Lieberman could win is if Diebold fixes it.

I Really Am Hoping For Good News
I really hope Lieberman loses so it will send a message to other Democrats to stop the war. I am concerned if Lieberman doesn't lose how the world will view it. We can't take too many more countries hating us.Lieberman Fights for Survival in Connecticuthttp://tinyurl.com/k7dd8

I knew that you and the west coast would be good together. You have an open and curious mind. You are intelligent, strong willed but kind. You will be a big assett to them I believe.

CAN are good people. I wrote about the meeting a little bit last night - http://cannabisnews.com/news/22/thread22048.shtml#47 and #48. Their main project right now is the Wonders of Cannabis Festival on October 28-29 in San Francisco. I wish I could tell you who all was there, but it was great to meet people that I had known about for a long time. Everything I was trying to do when I lived in Pittsburgh felt like it had been a training exercise for what is going on here. It's like every idea that I had about how to build a social movement, it is absolutely being done here and it is being run by people who know how to do it properly and without egos or power trips.

This is why I have a hard time believing that ballot measures will ever work. Our electoral system is too corrupt. If it wasn't this reason, it would have been something equally ridiculous. I'm sure that if Mr. Iverson had had enough valid signatures, the election officials would have dismissed them for being in the wrong color ink or something. They will think up ANYTHING, and all they have to do is stamp it to make it official. If he really wants to make this work, I would say this to him: Start earlier in the year, make sure all your reps have blue pens, and document EVERYTHING. Don't shortcut on anything, don't give them a reason to doubt you.I think the petitioners are noble in their quests, but the people in charge have the wrong focus. Don't focus on the goal, focus on the means. We've already got 80% of the public on our side. Just get the measure to the ballot, it will pass as long as it's on there. But it has to get there first.

What A Crock!
If this was an intitiative to make George W. Bush the official mascot of every sports team in Portland, you can bet your asses the signatures would have been just fine and dandy! Oh well, no sweat. According to the article
"marijuana" already ranks low on the priority list of the Portland police. Sure it does!THE WAY OUT IS THE WAY IN...Hope for all 9/11 truth seekers - The guilty are beginning to crack:
