Gray Davis Is No Second Coming!

Editor -- So Gray Davis thinks I voted for him because I was dazzled by his vision for California? Do I have news for him! I recognized exactly what Davis was as I figuratively held my nose in order to vote for him precisely because he was not Dan Lungren.
My revulsion at Lungren's overt fascism forced me to overlook Davis' support of the death penalty, his courtship of prison guards, his unwillingness to take a firm position on medical cannabis and his implicit refusal to recognize that many of California's educational woes are directly related to the money we have foolishly deflected from schools and poured into prisons. His recent threat to veto long- overdue enabling legislation which would finally allow implementation of medical cannabis, together with the ludicrous breast-beating reported in The Chronicle (``Davis Says He Calls All the Shots,'' July 21) are the final straw. It's about time he heard from some of the people who voted for him just why we did so. It wasn't because we saw him as some sort of Second Coming, and it certainly wasn't because we had him confused with either Gov. Pete Wilson or drug czar Barry McCaffrey, the two men he now seems most intent on emulating. Davis would do well to remember that medical marijuana was supported by 56 percent of a far bigger voter turnout than bothered to vote in his gubernatorial election, and the concept has since been solidly endorsed in several other states by even bigger margins. Another Letter to Davis
This is a letter I wrote after reading this man's statements. I sent him this letter by fax and by hard copy. Mr. Davis,I read in the newspaper today your remarks stating that it is the legislatures job toimplement your visions. I believe you have made a grave error. It is your job and thelegislatures duty to implement the peoples visions. You are a paid servant to the state of California, you were not voted to be “god of thestate”. As far as you winning by your percentage, I’m afraid you would have been greatlysurprised if there had been an option of “none of the above”. In that situation, you mighthave been surprised at how you and Dan Lungren would have lost percentage wise to thatoption. At this point in time I believe you fit the saying of “it is better to keep your mouth shutand have people think you stupid instead of opening your mouth and proving it”. Yourstatement in the paper today proved to me that you are not in your position to help thepeople of this state, but to help your own political gain. You have obviously allowed yourso called power to go to your head.It is politicians like yourself that are ruining the government of this United States andkilling the citizens faith in any representatives. We vote in hopes of gaining arepresentative that will uphold our dreams and wishes for our state and country, only tofind that once you have the office, you forget who put you there. I have been a democrat for 24yrs and today I am not proud of that fact, since you have soboldly stated it is your “visions” that are to be implemented. I feel you have betrayed eachand every person that voted for you. I can only hope that there will be some way to returnyou to the reality of your job and who it is you actually are serving.I assume I will not receive a reply from you, since every letter I have written to you withinthe last year has been ignored. Now I’m seeing why.... you must feel you are abovehaving to answer any questions your constituents have for you. Just once I would like toreceive a response that deals with the context of my letter, but I guess that is one of thevisions of my government that I will not see happen.Jean Cowsert
