Ohio -- For more than 35 years, David "Shake" Shakin has kept the faith. While many "flower children" of the 1960s and early 1970s have dropped out of the peace movement and joined the establishment, Shakin remains a true believer. His hair is white, but he still wears a beard. He calls an artists’ commune outside Athens, Ga., home. And he supports himself by traveling the country selling hand-made Indonesian jewelry at music and community festivals.
Shakin, 55, brought his jewelry business to Hempfest yesterday on the Ohio State University campus. He was among about 50 vendors that set up tables and booths at the 20 th annual pro-marijuana event. When he was a teenage student at Long Island University, Shakin participated in Vietnam War protests around the country. Those protests drew hundreds of thousands of demonstrators, he recalled. Radicals talked of revolution. Hempfest and other similar gatherings nowadays are mild by comparison, Shakin said. "Back then, you had more of an opportunity to do those things," he said. "Not now. It’s more a police state now." Still, there is an anti-establishment aura at Hempfest, Shakin said. Incense provided the most pungent scent in the afternoon, but the aroma would change in the evening, Shakin predicted. "The air will get sweeter," he said with a mischievous grin. Other booths provided more evidence that Hempfest was not the kind of event chambers of commerce feature in their promotional literature. Booths selling bongs and toke pipes proliferated. Other vendors sold T-shirts emblazoned with the images of such music icons as Bob Marley and Tupac Shakur. Signs promoting the legalization of pot were everywhere. Socialists and the Green and Libertarian parties set up booths early. Asked why Republicans and Democrats weren’t represented in the early afternoon, Steven Linnabary, treasurer of the Libertarian Party of Franklin County, said, "They’re making money off the war on drugs. Look at who the jailers, cops and prosecutors are. It’s all pure patronage." In 2004, OSU attempted to ban Hempfest from the campus. But U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley issued a restraining order prohibiting the university from canceling the event. OSU’s hierarchy remains unenthusiastic about Hempfest, said Phil Desenze, a 21-year-old OSU student who served as one of the festival’s co-coordinators. Because Students for a Sensible Drug Policy, which sponsors Hempfest, is considered a student organization, the university gives it $2,500 a year, Desenze said. But Ohio State then charges the group $2,800 to provide security, he said. Note: Pro-marijuana event still smokin’ on its 20 th anniversary.Complete Title: ‘Flower Children’ Of All Ages Still Blossom at OSU’s Hempfest Source: Columbus Dispatch (OH)Author: Robert Ruth Published: Sunday, June 04, 2006Copyright: 2006 The Columbus DispatchContact: letters dispatch.comWebsite: http://www.dispatch.com/Related Article & Web Site:SSDPhttp://www.ssdp.org/End The Drug War!http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread21878.shtmlCannabisNews -- Hemp Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/hemp.shtml

I had to look this up, Portage & Main:http://canada.archiseek.com/manitoba/winnipeg/portage_main_lge.htmlThat kind of brought some context to the song.I've always lived in a city, but my wife grew up in the country. So we bring different styles into our music too. I'd share some things from hers but I'm better at picking from mine, even though all the music is together in one place I know what I put there better than what she has.So in that spirit and choosing for the moment, here is something more for you tonight:http://tinyurl.com/q794g

I posted this before. They took it down but it is back up again. It's called Prairie Town. I find comfort in music. I don't find any comfort on the tv news. Music puts my mind in a quiet place or an energized place. I can think better too. Music is important. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_W2dwZk1qw&search=neil%20young

I actually have 26 Neil Young albums on my hard drive collection, which amounts to some 1.5 GB out of a little over 60 GB total so he probably pops up about 2.5% of the time.I'm proud of our music collection. Probably over 90% of it is stuff my wife or I really like, too.

I don't have much trouble because I have a 25 disc CD player. All of the CDs are Neil Young's but two. I had to take out two of Neil's to put in We Shall Overcome and The Dixie Chicks. I am looking forward to getting The Band's Greatest Hits. I always liked their music. I'm a little bit countryand a little bit rock and roll

I don't think I'd heard it before it popped up on the player either. I tend to collect a lot more music than I ever get around to listening to intentionally. It's more like things I know I'll want to listen to eventually, and maybe at a completely unexpected but perfectly appropriate moment. I love random play. It's almost unimaginable to me how much more of a pain it was to find what I wanted or needed to hear in the days when all of my music was on CD. To have to go and search for it, or to carefully index it in alphabetical order, and to have to shift everything when a new CD entered the collection. The aggravation of doing it was enough to make it a rare thing for me and so early on I got a 5-disc CD changer so I could load it and let things go for a while. Here's that memory thing, I can find them so well. And it's very much like having the music collection all on the computer. So many to choose from it's hard to be too specific about what you want to hear unless it's a special reason. Most of my old and favorite albums I've listened to so many times, but I have so many new ones that deserve to be heard and I hardly know which is best and which I will love and what would be most important for me to hear right now.

You're so kind and good and I can only wish I could do as much for you as you have for us. When we take a road trip we have an MP3 player that has 40 GB of music on it that we set on random play. As we were getting back home this song came on and it was kind of unexpected and amazing so here you go.http://tinyurl.com/q2ru9

What a difficult but exciting time this summer will be. We will have a wonderful time when you come to visit. I just love Whig. He is adorable and so is Mrs. Whig. My music I listen to these days is LWW, Greendale, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions and The Dixie Chicks. Those 4 albums cover my current mood very well. Heart of Gold The Movie will be released the middle of June so I ordered it and I also ordered the Greatest Hits from The Band. I am in a country, rock, activism mindset these days.

That's amazing. I have been having the same "feeling" all day. Like a lull before the storm. It's like a cease fire, and no one knows which side is gonna fire the shot that breaks it. The DEA will probably come out with an even more ridiculous article that will totally blow them out of the water with both the People, and the Congress. Look for it right after the Nov. elections. Can we turn Congress around on medical cannabis and have 2/3 voting for it, instead of against it? You bet we can. And we MUST.Can't wait for the concert, FoM. My wife has already secured some time. I haven't started figuring the mileage or anything yet. I just want to slide into it. It should be majical. Going to get NY and DC cds tomorrow.I agree, FoM. It's gonna be a long hot summer for the Mad Dogs of Cannabis Prohibition.Wage peace on war. END CANNABIS PROHIBITION NOW!

I feel we are in a Limbo time. Cannabis issues are slow and we are in this strange what I call transition time. Hopefully we will get many republicans out this election. Concerts will be starting soon and patriotic ferver will pick up with each CSNY concert and every Dixie Chicks concert. The closer we get to elections the more crazyness we will see. I mentioned to Whig, when they were here, that it's not good to corner a mad dog. That's what is happening and it's going to be a roller coaster ride this summer and fall.

Don't get me started.Norml...well their track record isn't so great either, but options aren't leaping up to offer themselves. It seems to me that the old addage "Power corrupts" applies to just about any organization that is limited to the amount of dollars or notoriety that they can glean from the rest of us. That's why progress is so slow. Peoples motivations in these cases are almost always circumnavigated, and dominated by some kind of greed or power struggle. Finding real sincerity in any organization that REQUIRES funding to move is highly unlikely.

NORML and other advocacy groups are intent on finding "test cases" that are most sympathetic to their political concerns, not to be a helping hand for those who need it.Because Jerry does not fit the profile of the drug war victim suffering from a terminal illness and who was alleged to be in possession of strictly personal medical quantities, he is not attractive to them.I'm sure Herbdoc went to them and tried to get their help, but he can't move them if they don't want to do it.

Jerry went in
on Febuary 6th this year. 4 months ago. A 2 year sentence, with hopefully some time off for good behavior. On a applicable note;Shortly after going in there was a movement to get NORML to find him a lawyer to launch an appeal. Herbdoc was handling it. However that movement seems to have died and nothing has come of it. Herbdoc seems to have become scarce, and no NORML lawyer ever contacted Jerry, or Linda. If any one knows anything about that, I'd like to see it happen.

They took out the love and replaced it with sex. That is one of the most important points to be made. And just like anything prohibited, SEX SELLS. So what is the answer? MODERATION. Women are sexy without one particle of makeup. When you over extend something natural, it becomes more than moderation, it becomes EXCESSIVE. Then excessive becomes normal, so you have to go to EXTREME. Then THAT becomes normal, and you have to invent an even higher level of LUST. Just like drugs. Why is it so hard to understand that in order to survive, we must limit?Well, the clock says I have to go to work. See ya.Toke.

Sorry museman.
I forgot to ask you that last question. You are right on on the answer to the first question, though. It is a mentality that fits only a certain kind of person. Does anyone know a prison guard personally? Are they an ass? Putting a pet or a human in a cage or on a chain, (everyday) has always been a peeve of mine. Want to break a dogs spirit? Put it on a chain. Want a hard hearted person where there once was joy? Put him/her in a cage. So tell me, where is the rehabilitation? The punishment faze is there. Where is the healing and rehabilitation? That is left up to society and the person on their release from prison. They do all they can to destroy you in there, then when they release you into civilization, you have to rebuild your psyche and repair your spirit. No wonder so many return to jail. Some are destroyed beyond rehabilitation. Prison is not a CORRECTIONAL institute. It is a punishment for profit institution, period. Jerry and Linda will be fine, but not happy until Jerry is out and home again. Til then, we and a few others are all they have. There is no love in prison except that which is kept protected in the prisoners heart. Try all they will, they won't destroy what Jerry and Linda have, but they need our support. I hope very much that Jerry gets an early release. He has six months down, I think. 18 more months to go. Linda may only get to visit once. A letter from Jerry is a ray a sunshine. Try it. You'll see.Mail:Jerry Sisson reg. #66424-065FMC Deven's Federal Medical CenterP.O. They took out the love and replaced it with sex.Britney Spears. What is that about? Keep everyone hooked on the flesh and no care for the spirit. Not love, not a relationship, but empty sex with strangers that don't want anything but a fix to get them off. It's blatant. It's not art. It's not music. It's crap. But Love Is Still Here. Flashback: Love Is All Around by The Troggs
{Troggs: Love Is All Around I feel it in my fingers
I feel it in my toes
Love is all around me
And so the feeling grows It's written on the wind
That's everywhere I go
So if you really love me
Come on and let it show You know I love you
I always will
My mind's made up
By the way that I feel There's no beginning
There'll be no end
Cause on my love
You can depend I see your face before me
As I lay on my bed
I kind of get to thinking
Of all the things we said You gave your promise to me
And I gave mine to you
I need someone beside me
In everything I do You know I love you
I always will
My mind's made up
By the way that I feel There's no beginning
There'll be no end
Cause on my love
You can depend It's written on the wind
That's everywhere I go
So if you really love me
Come on and let it show...} No wonder we believed in "make love not war" when we were surrouded by such songs. Too bad the present music scene is often so cynical.Love Is All Around download$

from "The Song I never Sang" circa 1972 (my minstrel days)Well I went down to the college the other day, just to see what I might see.Hopin' to find a little open mindand some people tryin' to be free. But when I got there they'd all cut their hair, shaved their beards off too,and they looked at me like I was a tree, and somebody said "Man, who are you?"I said "Waddya mean? This ain't no dreamwe been livin'in every day. There's people dyin', little babies cryin'...Is that all you've got to say?One war's gone, there's another one now,and you still got your right to vote, but you're just gonna rest, and forget the mess, while they cram it all down your throat.Well I'm tellin' you it ain't over yet,you still got your debt.Hey society's fool, you got to play it cool,'cause there's a noose around your neck. And I told you.Starin' at your TV sets, you've fallen on your knees.Wonderin' just where the hell you're at,you ask the media "Please,I want to hear some truth before I go and die.C'mon and tell me somethin' elsebesides a plastic lie.Well it's about time for turnin' round.Time to show the world just what we have found.Time to open the doors on just a little more life,'cause it's the end of time, near the end of strife. And I, I told you, I told you, I told you.Wel you're goin' far in your daddy's car,and he's payin' your way through school. You got your grass, and there ain't no draft, and you're thinkin' that you're playin' it cool. But while you're sittin' in class, you can bet your ass I'm out here bein' free, and all you nine-to-fives just can't save your liveswhile you exist in such apathy.I know this generation is gonna seethe sign up in the sky,but if you're found dead on your mournin' bedthen there's no need to wonder why.Well the wind has blown, and the seed has sown. The tree is ready to bloom. In the comin' night, we're gonna need the light,so go out and find some room to grow inso we may know the way to go infrom yesterday, to tomorrow, all the way to today,so we may know way.inspired by Pete Seiger and Arlo Guthrie

Neil Diamond was HUGE
...in his day. His "star power" may not have endured the way some others' has, but in his prime, he was a huge star and sold very large numbers of "LPs".That pot song was news to me, though, as I have only ever been familiar with his big hits from the late 1960s and the 1970s. Pretty cool, though the line about "trying harder stuff" was pretty naive and leads me to speculate that ol' Neil never had to deal with people who were messed up on harder stuff.

"Righteous Indignation"
Righteous indignation is often the beginning of that "calling" many of us have experienced that ultimately, has led us, together, to this place, C-News, to comfort and encourage each other. We don't get much comfort and courage from a few of our friends, families, and acquaintances.Righteous indignation must be handled with great care. The truly righteous seek for a merciful resolution. That's opposite to the fear spreading, threatening, persecuting, and punishing tactics often employed by the oh so very "self-righteous" prohibitionists.I worry about their plans.

global warming: In answer to your question, refer to the above subject heading. FoM: I actually had not heard the song, either. I found the song online and copied the lyrics because I thought several people might be interested. Neil Diamond is not exactly considered pop music royalty today, but back in the day he wrote a lot of popular songs for the Monkees and others. Neil Diamond has recently appeared in the season finale of the comedy series Scrubs, and he featured prominently in the movie Saving Silverman. He also appears in the brand new film, Keeping Up With the Steins (limited release). So, he appears to be having a bit of a renaissance of his own.Thought you might want to know.Dan B

The FDA latest......they say cannabis is too dangerous to be used medically but..............WASHINGTON - A multiple sclerosis drug pulled from the market last year because of a rare but life-threatening side effect will return under a restricted distribution program, health officials said Monday. The
Food and Drug Administration said it will let Biogen Idec Inc. and Elan Corp. PLC resume selling Tysabri under a requirement that doctors, pharmacies and patients register with a program designed to ensure the safe use of the drug.Tysabri received FDA approval in November 2004. Biogen Idec, its Cambridge, Mass.-based manufacturer, voluntarily withdrew it in February 2005 after two patients in clinical trials died of a rare brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML. Ireland-based Elan distributes the drug, also called natalizumab. Here are the symptoms of multifocal leukoencephalopathy, the potential side effect of this re-approved, FDA endorsed ummm poison.Symptoms of PML include mental deterioration, vision loss, speech disturbances, ataxia (inability to coordinate movements), paralysis, and, ultimately, coma reflecting the multifocal distribution of brain lesions. In rare cases, seizures may occur.

Neil Diamond circa 1968
Here's one you may not have heard of, written and recorded by Neil Diamond in 1968--near the beginning of his heydey, if you ask me. From his album Velvet Gloves and Spit. The Pot Smokers Song
1968 Publisher: Stonebridge Music
Reg. Date: 08/29/68 La, la, la, Pot, pot, give me some pot.Forget what you are,You can be what you're not.High, high, I wanna get high. You'll never give it up if youGive it a try.La la la la, Mm Mm La la la,Pot, pot, give me some pot.Forget what you are,You can be what you're not.Do, do, take a family cruise,You with your grass,Mom and Dad with this booze, oo oo.La la la la, Mm Mm La la la,Pot, pot, give me some pot.Forget what you are,You can be what you're not.Tough, tough, the world is so tough,And when it gets harderYou can try harder stuff, uh uh.La la la la, Mm Mm La la la,Pot, pot, give me some pot.Forget what you are,You can be what you're not.Hip, hop, you wanna be hip. You're nowhere at all ifYou don't take a trip.Dan B

Forgetfulness
May be a blessing and yet,Can We ever forget the fallenIn this war on drugs? Those human beings who languish in our prisons? What was their sin against God?To disobey our laws?Have We grown up?Can We make laws,Regarding our place in this universe?Has the breathe and gift been so forgotten? The Night is Forever in front of us,I forget my civic responsibility,When I peer into the great divide,That most splendid infinity,For I Am a child,My gentle touch,Marks my place,

Anger
Is a rather familiar emotion to me at this point. I've explored the finer points and breakdowns, due to a lifetime of accusations towards me concerning it. I know the difference between 'emotional reaction' and 'deep outrage.' The former is a personal problem, the latter is global. In the words of my second greatest hero, Cpt. J.T. Kirk;"I like my anger. I need my anger. It keeps me on my toes."

I am not sure. Once she gets past the snafus, she may stay in a conjugal cell. I'm sure they'll make her pay for the priviledge. Or if she can , she will probably get a motel or something.

That's terrible. We sent money the day after you posted that Jerry needed commissary money. Linda should be getting a check today or tomorrow.Years ago when my son's father was in the Army I had to go to Walter Reed Hospital as an emergency. To make a long story short my husband didn't exist in their records even though he was in Basic Training at the time. PS: I think the problem with the bank on our end is fixed.

more outrage
Here is an email excerpt from I recieved from Jerry's wife Linda;"The knuckle draggers in charge at his facility are giving him a hard time about me coming out to visit him. They are saying I can't because we're not married. When in fact I have the marriage license to prove it. The numbskull I spoke with said, "that won't help you, you can purchase those at Coney Island." It's hard to not get upset at these idiots. But I know that's what they want, they want to power trip you into an emotional breakdown. Well, anyway, I have purchased a plane ticket and am planning on going."Petty power trippers have risen to greater heights during the reign of (self)'righteousness' upheld by fearful, judgemental, narrow minded, hypocritical, "christian" followers of the RULE of law. The day when a prison employee with the IQ of about 65 (a little higher than Bush)can mess with people long distance, has that kind of power is the day when some kind of wakeup should be happening. Is it? I ask the world this question, not Cnews.ps Jerry could use some commissary help. I am going to talk to Linda about setting up a paypal account for Jerry, when she gets back.Linda says hi, and; "My energy goes elsewhere these days. It's hard taking care of everything by myself but I have to say I am doing a damn good job of it. I'm going to be a lot wiser and a little tougher when Jerry gets home."She is a strong woman. My respect for her has gone up quite a bit.

The Thought has Passed
Through my mind, maybe this place is like that New York Times,Some rag of despondencies,CNEWS, imagine that,News about Cannabis,News about prisons and and more prisons,It was never the righteous It was the money changers and greed,Can't spell spit and the phlegm on your face,Your little comfort,Is so easily displaced,By your wonder,The seeds of profit and margins,Mark your corporeal existence,Have you ever thought about your soul? You will be remembered,As you walk voluntarily into your promised place,A place that is devoid of Light,Eternity is an awfully long sentence,You can remember, every step,Every thought and deed,You can remember that last glimpse of Light,As you become engulfed in Infinite Night,That is your Eternal Resting Place,Forever and Ever,Divorced from Light,Forever separated,Be a Proud Warrior,

This reminds me of some movie I once watched, where the Dr, was commenting on the middle ages of humans history , how in the middle of the plague, that is the black plague, the people went out and killed all the "cats", because they thought, these cats are from the devil, in the meantime, the rats were left with no predator, and thus 3/4 of the population died.

Tashkin
The prohibitionists probably have him holed up somewhere...forceing him to find his "mistake"...or being told he has to deny the results of the research. They don't care about the science and he has always been on their "side" before. What could he have been thinking? I wouldn't be surprised if he were being dragged back and forthe across the coals by the prohibitionists.Mel Semblar must be so mad at him. Tashkin has to be looking at future grant money out the window too. I wonder what made him tell the truth this time?I hope he's ok and not being put through hell by the prohibitionists.

Freewilks's article
This makes me very, very angry."Rather than feeding people THC, Roth says, researchers should try to develop drugs that bind only to the cannabinoid receptor found on immune cells."Why? Rather than help people IMMEDIATELY, let's force Billions of dollars through our corrupt political, justice, and medical agencies so they can benefit FIRST, while the sick and dieing languish for years with pain and death, to come up with the same conclusion about cannabis? IT IS MEDICINE! It needs no manipulation, except for fine tuning proper strains to their targeted illness! It's already MANUFACTORED! The FDA is the Federal Devils Advocate! Wage peace on war. END CANNABIS PROHIBITION NOW!

One More Comment
What really bothers me about the Gay Marriage issue is it shouldn't be an issue. I fear for our country if we continue to allow extremists, for lack of what to call them, to control us. I am conservative in most areas of my life but I believe that people shouldn't have to be like or think like me. I want a colorful world. I want a world where people can be people and not be put in a corner and hated. Hate rules now under this administration and the whole world sees it too.

what Bush really thinks..............
is that by putting gay marriage on the ballot in November, he will get the evangelical base out to the polls, when they otherwise would just stay home and not support him.Once they go to the polls to vote discrimination into the Constitution, they would likely cast a vote for Bush as well.

wow freewilks
it's so weird! i was just saying to my friend yesterday that i believe the reason i have not gotten cancer and my heart has not stopped is due to my intake of cannabis.
my immune system is bass-ackwards, so the 'eat-'em-up' cells that normally target things such as infection instead feast on the healthy cells. dang mutants.
but - i am more thoroughly convinced than ever that the protective benefit at the cellular level of cannabis is what has kept many, many like me alive and witnessing.
i love it when i'm right!

hope everyone has a great today - mbc

OT: more medicals uses for THC
Cannabis may help keep arteries clear
16 April 2005
From New Scientist Print Edition. Subscribe and get 4 free issues.
EATING low doses of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, helps prevent arteries clogging up, at least in mice.THC binds to two receptors in the body. One is found mostly on brain cells and is responsible for the chemical's psychotropic effects. The other receptor is found mostly on immune cells, and THC has been shown to suppress the immune response to infections and cancer.François Mach at University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, wondered if this effect might also help prevent the build-up of fatty deposits in arteries, or atherosclerosis, by reducing the inflammation associated with this process. Sure enough, when his team fed 1 milligram of THC per kilogram of bodyweight - a low dose that should not have any psychotropic effects - to mice susceptible to atherosclerosis, it greatly slowed the progress of the disease (Nature, vol 434, p 782).Snipped
