Santa Cruz -- Supporters of an initiative to reduce police enforcement of recreational pot use turned in more than the required number of signatures to place the measure on the November ballot."This measure offers a sensible alternative to the failed federal war on drugs," organizer Andrea Tischler wrote in a statement. "Santa Cruz citizens don't want our police to waste their time and our tax dollars arresting, jailing and prosecuting nonviolent marijuana users."
The group, known as Santa Cruz Citizens for Sensible Marijuana Policy, needs to collect signatures of 3,423 registered voters to bring the issue to a vote. They turned in more than 6,000.The number of signatures required to force a vote was different for the marijuana initiative than the minimum wage initiative, whose supporters also filed Thursday, because the number of registered voters fluctuates. The signatures need to be counted and verified by county elections officials within the next 30 days before the measure can officially qualify for the ballot.Marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, but allowed for medical use in California. The group's initiative includes cutting off federal drug-enforcement resources to ensure the proposed city policy is followed.Marijuana enforcement in Santa Cruz would still apply to driving under the influence, sales to minors and use or sale in public.City Attorney John Barisone and local police officials have questioned the legality of the proposal.Complete Title: Initiative To Relax Pot Rules Headed To Ballot in Santa CruzSource: Santa Cruz Sentinel (CA)Author: Shanna McCord, Sentinel Staff Writer Published: April 21, 2006 Copyright: 2006 Santa Cruz SentinelContact: editorial santa-cruz.comWebsite: http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/Related Articles & Web Site: SC Citizens for Sensible Marijuana Policyhttp://www.taxandregulate.org/sc06/index.htmS.C. Canada
It's like an infection, what we're dealing with. These neocons, these fascists, they are here, they are there, we try to clear them up in one place, they pop up in another. And to them we are the same. To each of us, this is a shadow war, a struggle for control. It is like pressing down on a carpet bubble. This is the battle for everything, for ever more, should they not fight to the end?By these terms you could say there is no difference between us, but there is, and it is this that we focus upon, that the tree is judged by the fruit. What fruit we bring, what fruit they deliver. Which of us brings suffering, sadness, death and loss, and which of us brings life, joy and redemption?Know this and know what tree is your own.

Wow!
Just watched a segment on the nightly local news, WBOC, out of Salisbury, MD about the FDA statement and they stressed that doctors think the statement was politically motivated. A Dr. Ehdelman(sp), from CA, countered the FDA claim that there is no evidence that cannabis has medical benefits by saying there are reams of evidence, libraries full of evidence of the medicinal value of marijuana. Again, wow. 420 yo. Sang Home Sweet Homegrown at the Seacrets open mic on Wednesday night in OC and received a rousing applause.

Thanks for the bad news. I went to CC and read about it. I thought they were in trouble not to long ago too. I feel really sorry for Canada now.

Up in Smoke Cafe has been raided by Hamilton Cops

Canda's gone crazy
http://lastonespeaks.blogspot.com/
In contrast to last year when a cannabis rally was allowed to go forward in peace, this rally didn't end on such a high note. This just in.
BREAKING - The Up in Smoke Cafe has been raided by Hamilton Police Service this afternoon. Details are sketchy but several customers as well as activists Chris Lawson, Matt Mernagh, Adam and John (Gluten) have been arrested. Some have been charged with trafficking presumably stemming from yesterday's "Free Pot Smoke Out." Police have the keys to the establishment and it is unclear when the cafe will reopen.
I'm telling you this new conservative government in Canada is just as insane as our own neo-cons.

Say what?
City Attorney John Barisone and local police officials have questioned the legality of the proposal.Wait one second. Registered voters turn in enough signatures to place an item ( a proposal) on an election ballot and the city attorney questions its legality? Nothing could be more American than another lawyer pissing the general public and myself me off yet again!

The group's initiative includes cutting off federal drug-enforcement resources to ensure the proposed city policy is followed.Right on! How about every state passing an initiative telling the feds to get the hell out if they're going to meddle with state affairs!THE WAY OUT...Dr Hawkins Tightens Mr. Ternette's Loose Screw:

Good.
I like the way the public can mandate the way they want the police to behave.
