James Brown To Kick Off Woodstock '99
Thursday July 22 8:46 PM ET James Brown To Kick Off Woodstock '99Full CoverageWoodstock '99 LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - While the concert bill for Woodstock '99 is dominated by today's hottest recording stars, the three-day music festival opens Friday with a performance by one of rock 'n' roll's pioneers, James Brown.Organizers announced Thursday that the ``Godfather of Soul'' will take the stage as the very first act of the 30th anniversary celebration of the landmark musical event that helped define the counterculture movement of the 1960s.Renowned as ``the hardest working man in show business,'' Brown has recorded more than 100 singles, including such hits as ``Papa's Got a Brand New Bag'' and his trademark ``I Got You (I Feel Good).''In recent years, however, Brown has had his share of health and legal problems. In March 1998, he agreed to enter a drug treatment program after pleading no contest to firearms charges in South Carolina. Earlier that year, he spent six days in hospital, reportedly to battle an addiction to painkillers.Brown joins an eclectic lineup of talent that includes fellow R&B heroes Al Green and Parliament/Funkadelic. But the bulk of the Woodstock '99 bill consists of contemporary hitmakers such as the Dave Matthews Band, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Sugar Ray, Limp Bizkit, DMX, Collective Soul and Counting Crows. The music festival runs Friday through Sunday at the site of the Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y., about 200 miles from the site of the original Woodstock festival of 1969.
