Editor -- State Attorney General Lockyer should be praised for his brave stance supporting commonsense implementation of Proposition 215 (medicinal marijuana).
It's about time our chief cop wants to focus on murderers, rapists, etc., rather than busting AIDS patients smoking pot. I'm glad I voted for him in the last election. Gov. Davis is reportedly going to veto the state ID card plan because it conflicts with federal law. What happened to the guy who claimed to stand up for the people of California in the last election? At the least, he should take our case to the federal government and defend the voters of his own state. What a sniveling politician if he vetoes this bill. Is he brown-nosing the big boys in Washington with hopes of moving on up to national office? The real issue at stake here is not pot smoking or drug abuse. It is the insidious erosion and betrayal of public democracy here in the United States. Even if the Feds or Gray Davis disagree with Prop. 215, they are obliged to stand by it anyway, because his constituents voted and passed it. Period. Not to mention that medicinal marijuana has never been voted on nationally by the Feds; in fact it has been voted in by seven states already. In fact, a vote in Washington, D.C., itself approved a marijuana bill, but the results of the election were suppressed via some arcane federal jurisdictional law. Yes, election results suppressed in America! If a foreign government did, that the U.S. government would condemn it vehemently and place sanctions on that country. What a bunch of hypocrites. It figures that this behavior comes from the same bunch which sponsored the whole impeachment fiasco, which cost us taxpayers tens of millions of our hard-earned dollars. If Gray Davis vetoes this bill he has lost my vote permanently. STACIE STICK McKinleyville DEMOCRACY IN ACTION Editor -- So now we learn that Gov. Davis will effectively block the implementation of Proposition 215 by vetoing the bill to create a state identification card for the users of medical marijuana. Davis' spokesman said, ``Until the federal government legalizes its use or growing, state government should not put itself in a position of sanctioning it.'' Governor, in a democracy it is the people who decide where the government should position itself, and the people of California have already spoken on this issue. Democracy, governor: Is that a foreign concept to you? Have you heard of that before? If you cannot in good conscience facilitate the realization of the will of the people of the state of California, as expressed in lawful election, then you need to step down. If your first loyalty is to Washington, then you must have forgotten where you are and who put you there. Governor, whose side are you on? You need to dance with them that brung you. Democracy in action???
The editor's note above is wrong. Gov. Davis' veto will help to implement Prop. 215. What Mr. Lockyer and his 'task force' are doing is NOT what Prop. 215 is about. Do you want to 'register' with the government (State) and let someone know that you are a marijuana user? What if another administration (like we would have had under Lungren) decides that, indeed you are a criminal. Do you want a bureaucracy after you? The 'registry' is supposed to be "voluntary". Did you know that the federal income tax that is confiscated from you is also "voluntary"? I think we all know what happens when we don't 'volunteer' to pay our taxes!! If this editor wants to see democracy in action, he should urge implementation of Prop. 215 on it's own wording. It's just not that complicated. What part of "physician recommendation", "care provider", or "allow to grow for medicinal purposes" don't you understand??????
