Letters: Dopey Thoughts About Marijuana!

General Barry McCaffrey unremittingly claims that marijuana is a gateway drug ("Clinton's drugs adviser supports Canberra stance", Herald, July 14).All scientific studies that have addressed this issue have refuted that marijuana is a gateway drug.
The drug war propagandists, by creating the fuzzy concept of a gateway drug, are frantically countering the favourable publicity garnered by its acceptance for medical uses.Yes, youngsters who smoke marijuana are more likely to use cocaine than those who have not smoked it. These marijuana users exhibit more risk-taking behaviour than non-users and they often have ready access to cocaine from the same dealers. Most definitely, there is nothing in marijuana that forces a small percentage of these marijuana users to try cocaine. If General McCaffrey can claim that marijuana is a gateway drug, we could claim that coffee, beer and cigarettes are gateways to cocaine. After all, people who use these substances are more likely to use cocaine than non-users.Yet, except for some rabid prohibitionists, nobody claims that these substances are gateway drugs.Let's face it, General McCaffrey's agenda is purely political and has nothing to do with scientific truth.Pubdate: July 17, 1999http://www.smh.com.au/news/9907/17/text/letters.html

Cats, Catnip & Marijuana
For my cat, at least, catnip was the gateway drug *to* marijuana. When she was a young thing (and I was a young thing) she quite enjoyed catnip ... an affinity I must confess I never shared. Then I got older & my cat got older. I discovered marijuana -- and shared the joy with my cat, who ... well, took to it like catnip. Now we smoke up together once in a while (I take my hit, blow it on the cat; she sniffs the smoke). Doesn't take much to get a cat high, and it suits their nature: hungry and lazy. :^) Some don't like it, some love it; mine stops after three hits and always seems to enjoy it.So be careful with that catnip. Never know what road it'll lead you down. :-)

It's So Different Now!
Hi Rainbow,I appreciate what you say, no apologizes necessary. I just can't imagine what it would be like to have to deal with school age children and this horrible drug war. I went to Catholic school all my life but two years. I really liked it alot. It was strick but not that bad. I believe in discipline and that we got, but the drug war makes it a whole different ball game.Peace, FoM!

Gateway - Catnip
In a recent happenning at my daughters (Catholic elementary) school a couple of students were caught with catnip. Apparently they were substituting it for marijuana (according the the principle). So a whole school shakedown occurred with searches of bookbags and lockers. When I suggested that catnip is the real gateway drug not marijuana the prohibitionists at the school system scoffed and did not understand what I was saying.I suggest that all pet stores be forbidden to sell catnip. We should create a special fungus to kill all catnip. The kids also had cigarrettes, but alas there was no marijuana. The school is entrenched with DARE and the superintendent od the school system thinks that it is a good program. What a bunch of close minded officials. I would move my children but the public schools are even worse in this community of high priced doctors and computer programmers - real republican country.CheersRainbow in MinnesotaSTAMP out Catnip - no wait my cats are revolting. Sorry, I went off on a prohibitionist zeal.
