HENDERSON, Ky. The arrest of an Alabama woman in this western Kentucky city completed a drug bust that started in San Diego and extended to Louisville and Henderson, authorities said.
The operation brought 500 to 600 pounds of marijuana into Louisville and Henderson each month, police said. Pamela Williams, 30, of Montgomery, Ala., was arrested and charged Wednesday with trafficking in marijuana. She was taken into custody after she accepted an invitation to pick up her car at the Henderson police station. It had been towed from the parking lot of a local hotel, police Maj. David Turpen said. City police, acting on a tip from the Louisville Police Department, had been watching the parking lot of the Days Inn since early Wednesday. They were waiting for an individual who was scheduled to pick up a package of marijuana. Louisville authorities had intercepted the package and passed it along to Henderson police. The Louisville department also provided Henderson officers with a description of the vehicle they suspected would be used by the person picking up the drugs, Turpen said. Police spotted the vehicle and obtained a search warrant for it. Inside, officers found a rental agreement with Williams' name on it. A search of the trunk revealed $23,685 in cash, some in a suitcase and some hidden in the spare-tire compartment. After several hours of waiting at the hotel, police decided to tow the car and hope Williams would call to claim it. "(Williams) called the police department and said, 'I have cash in my car. Can I come and get it?"' Turpen said. "I said, 'Come on down. We'll talk about it."' The intercepted package contained 8 pounds, 9 ounces of marijuana. Williams was released from the Henderson County jail after posting a $15,000 bond. Lakeisha Canty, 22, also of Montgomery, was arrested at the San Diego International Airport Tuesday. Turpen said she was getting on an airplane to fly to Evansville Regional Airport when drug-sniffing dogs found 13{ pounds of marijuana in her possession. Canty received a federal charge of possession and transportation of marijuana, he said. Louisville authorities arrested four other people who are allegedly part of the drug ring and seized 65 pounds of marijuana this week. The street value of the marijuana intercepted in the three cities was estimated at between $105,000 and $278,000.
