Police have arrested eight people and seized more than $3.5 million in assets after a two-year RCMP investigation into an international drug ring.
Police believe the network of smugglers have moved about 2,200 kilograms of marijuana and marijuana oil from the Caribbean to the United States and Canada since the early 1980s, hiding the drugs in sailboats. ``In one incident, we believe they landed their sailboat right in Kingston,'' said Corporal Michael Waugh of the Kingston RCMP detachment. The arrests were made Wednesday and came after two years of co-operation between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and police and customs officials in the United States and Antigua. They seized a villa and two sailboats in Antigua, four Ontario homes and a sailboat near Kingston. Investment portfolios, a house trailer, vehicles and other property were also seized. Eight people face a total of 31 charges, including drug trafficking and money laundering. Kingston residents Sean Callen, 41, Kerri-Lynne Callen, 33, and Wayne Jarrett, 62; Mark Quinn, 39, of Palgrave, near Bolton; Victor Detlor, 33, and Tracy Detlor, 29, both of Tichborne, north of Kingston; John Grunwell, 40, of Trenton; and Richard Emms, 32, of Guelph appeared in a Kingston court yesterday. The investigation is continuing.
