Revelers at yesterday's 4/20 pot festivities at CU could find themselves on CU Police's version of Reality TV. Police officers used digital and video cameras to document those who participated in the University's annual cannabis celebration Wednesday.CU Police Lt. Tim McGraw said if police find evidence in the photos or tapes of people smoking marijuana or vandalizing property, it could be used as evidence to issue summonses.
McGraw said CU Police issued no tickets for marijuana possession at the informal celebration, though officers contacted two people and referred them to the university's Judicial Affairs department. One person was seen vandalizing and tampering with sprinkler heads, and McGraw said that person might be arrested in the future for criminal mischief or other charges. No injuries were reported during the smoking session. In recent years, hundreds or thousands have congregated on CU's Farrand Field at 4:20 p.m. on April 20 for a spirited pro-pot rally. Some who attend smoke pot as an act of protest. But this year was different when CU officials and CU Police stated their intent to close the field at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, setting out signs stating that purpose on Wednesday morning. The signs were all stolen.Pot smokers further countered the closure by moving to the parking lot of the Leeds Business School, the business school's field and the observatory adjacent to the Coors Events Center. The University then turned on the sprinklers in that area at 3:30 p.m. to disperse the crowd.CU-Boulder spokesperson Pauline Hale said the University's measures aimed at preventing the smoke-fest produced mixed results."We had hoped to discourage participation in illegal behavior; however, in terms of avoiding confrontation and conflict, that is always a success when we are able to do that," she said.Yesterday, many in the 4/20 crowd said the University's tactics would not discourage them."No one can rain on the nug parade. All the sprinklers in the world will not stop what goes on at this school," said Alley Gordon on Wednesday. She was giving away face paint on the business field when the sprinklers were set off.McGraw said the police did what it could to control the crowd given the resources it has available."It just boils down to what level of resource utilization do we employ to enforce a class two petty offense," McGraw said. "We have chosen to take a posture where we have monitored the crowd."From a criminal standpoint, marijuana possession is less serious than littering, he said."It somewhat hits the proverb, do you want to kill a fly with a sledgehammer?" he said.Source: Colorado Daily (UC Edu, CO)Author: Matt Williams, Colorado Daily Staff WriterPublished: April 22, 2005Copyright: 2005 Colorado DailyContact: letters coloradodaily.comWebsite: http://www.coloradodaily.com/CannabisNews -- Cannabis Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml

Officials Overreact to Festival Invite Resistance
"From a criminal standpoint, marijuana possession is less serious than littering, he [CU Police Lt. Tim McGraw] said."And do we turn sprinklers on people who litter? We want to be treated with dignity!
