State and federal permit applications will be submitted promptly, with the objective of planting hemp seeds in the ground in early fall.
Pubdate: 7/9/99 Governor Benjamin Cayetano signed House Bill 32 into law on 7/7/99. The law authorizes privately funded industrial hemp research in Hawaii when state and DEA permits are issued for the project. The Governor signed the bill before Legislative sponsors, most of whom were wearing aloha shirts made out of hemp fabric. Also present at the ceremony were Mike Brady, president of Alterna, Terry Katz, president of California Tan, Peter Thielen, president of Island Hemp Wear, David P. West, Ph.D. And other supporters. Alterna Applied Research Laboratories, a California company which makes hemp-based hair care products, presented Legislative leaders with $200,000 to fund the Hawaii Industrial Hemp Project. Alterna's check was written on Canadian hemp paper. David P. West, Ph.D. is Principal Investigator for the Hawaii project and will direct the hemp seed variety trials. Dr. West has been in Hawaii for several weeks identifying potential sites and meeting with government officials. State and federal permit applications will be submitted promptly, with the objective of planting hemp seeds in the ground in early fall. By- Rep. Cynthia Thielen
