Madrid -- Spain's northeastern Catalonia region is planning to make cannabis available on prescription to the seriously ill, a regional health official said on Tuesday. The pioneering project, which still has to be approved by the national Ministry of Health, would dispense the drug through four hospitals and 60 pharmacies to patients undergoing chemotherapy or those affected by chronic pain.
"We will start with a pilot programme for some chronic diseases," Catalan health councillor Marina Geli told journalists. The drug, which is illegal in Spain, would be dispensed in capsules to patients who doctors believe have not responded well to other medicines. The ministry has not yet set a date for the project to start as some technical questions need to be resolved, but said there was "good understanding" between the two sides.Geli said patients, who would be tracked to evaluate the programme, could start receiving the drug in the first half of this year. Spanish Region To Allow Marijuana for Pain ReliefFebruary 1, 2005MADRID (AFP) - Four hospitals and about 60 Catalan chemists are to start offering marijuana for medicinal purposes, in what would be a first for Spain, a regional health official said.

Marina Geli, a health advisor for the Catalan regional government based in eastern Spain, said an agreement to that effect between regional authorities and the national health ministry would be signed shortly. She did not say how many sick people the move would affect. The marijuana would be distributed under strict medical guidance, and only in cases where there was no other effective treatment, she added. The move follows a proposal by a regional grouping of chemists who said it would be useful in relieving pain and nausea suffered by cancer and multiple sclerosis patients and anorexia among AIDS sufferers. Rafael Manzanera, head of the Catalan regional health authority, said this would allow proper medical supervision of patients who took marijuana as pain relief, and "has nothing to do with recreational use of this substance."
