Calling it an act of "retaliation," a nationally recognized medical marijuana advocate says she's being forced to prove to California officials that she should still be allowed to drive.Diane Monson, one of two Northern Californians testing the federal government's strict stance against medical pot in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, received a Dec. 6 notice from the Department of Motor Vehicles requiring a review of her driving qualifications "in the interest of your personal safety and the safety of others using the highways."
By late Tuesday, however, the department changed its tune, indefinitely postponing a hearing that had been scheduled for Thursday. "Upon being alerted by the news media to the situation involving Diane Monson, high-ranking DMV officials acted immediately to postpone the Thursday driver safety hearing, pending a thorough internal review to determine all the circumstances surrounding this matter," DMV spokesman Bill Branch said in a prepared statement.Monson's attorney, David Michael, applauded the news. "What the DMV did was the right thing," he said.Without the media attention, he said, his client "would have been stuck in a bureaucratic morass."Michael questioned the re-examination process and wondered if there were others whose driving qualifications were being questioned quietly."I don't know who else is being subjected to these types of hearings," Michael said.Snipped:Complete Article: http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/dmv.htmSource: Sacramento Bee (CA)Author: Ed Fletcher -- Bee Staff WriterPublished: Wednesday, December 22, 2004Copyright: 2004 The Sacramento BeeContact: opinion sacbee.comWebsite: http://www.sacbee.com/Related Articles & Web Site:Angel Raich v. My Perfect Test For Impairment
Let two people do this test. One person drinks two beers and the other one smokes two joints. Give them a full cup of coffee. Tell them to walk about 20 or 30 feet and put the coffee on a table and don't spill any. I know which one would pass that test.

E_J, picture this
Imagine that every person in California who drives under the influence of THC suddenly "got honest" and submitted themselves to this examination for driving safety that the DMV seems to think it wants. They would either have to A) Pull the licences of all these people, millions upon millions of them, and risk a massive backlash and protest and who knows what kind of mayhemB) Try to accomodate them, a massive task they are not even remotely outfitted/staffed to handle. The whole organization would go into chaos under that weight.C) Admit that it really isn't a problemThey really don't want to start doing this...

meddling DMV
If you think about it, the only reason the DMV knows Monson has a recommendation and is using medical cannabis is because the press have written so much about her. Without the publicity, it would still be between she and her doctor alone. That same publicity that helps the cause and gets it into the national mind, can hurt her on a more local level unfortunately. At least when there are sanctimonious people who have any kind of power in her life (someone at DMV is that way evidently).Diane, you did not choose this fight, but it is part of your life now. Stay strong. Your struggle is our struggle.

The cat is ALMOST out of the bag
The cat being the fact that marijuana doesn't make drivers unsafe on the road and the bag being the law enforcement corruption that keeps this scientifically validated fact from being recognized by the news media.
