There is an ongoing debate as to whether the matter of marijuana reform helps or hinders the advancement of medical marijuana and industrial hemp. As one of the leading advocates of all three genres of cannabis.
I have been caught in the crossfire, but I assert both the rightness of all three of these interconnected causes and my own personal right to defend all of them. Each of these aspects stands on its own merit, and in combination with the others. Being consistent and honest about one's beliefs is an impowering experience. It keeps you from getting painted into a corner or from having to denounce a principle with which you genuinely agree. When you speak the truth, you might make an honest mistake, but there is no fear in getting caught in a lie or a compromising situation. Industrial hemp, regardless of the THC content, has the capacity to improve the lives of many hundreds of millions of people globally. The stalk can provide raw material to uplift the most primative societies of Africa, Haiti and elsewhere, as well as to augment timber, cotton and fossil fuels used by technologically advanced societies. It will reduce pollution, and the seed can be used to abate famine and improve the immune systems of people everywhere. This is true with or without the active cannibinoids. Medical marijuana is a creation of God and nature with a near perfect balance and variation of cannabinoids to ease the pain and suffering of people with more than a hundred common health problems. Its effective, inexpensive to produce, and safer than any pharmeutical drug on the market, including aspirin. This is true with or without the fiber and seed oil of the plant. Marijuana is safer to consume than is alcohol, tobacco or even the water supply of many metropolitan areas. Its effects are mostly pleasant and positive, and any unpleasant side-effects are short lived and eliminated simply by ceasing to consume it. The only proven hazard from its consumption is the risk of bronchitis and pulmonary irritation caused by the smoke, and even that is less than the risk posed by the air pollution of Los Angeles and other urban centers. It does not cause violence, criminality or social blight. Like most Americans, I don't want children to use marijuana and I am concerned for the handful of adults who develope a self-destructive habit of over consumption. But prisons and secret police are not the answer, they are the crux of the problem. Creating a regulated market with an age- of-consent at 18 years, along with social programs to help those who need help controlling their appitites is the only socially responsible solution that is consistant with the Bill of Rights. And that is the fact. I'm Chris Conrad, author of Hemp:Lifeline to the Future and Hemp for Health.
