DAWSON CREEK, B.C. (CP) - Canada is increasingly becoming a transit point for illegal drugs entering the United States and the Liberal government's inaction isn't helping, a Reform MP says.
"Canada is becoming Columbia North, but at least the Colombian government has made a concerted effort to shut down the drug cartels," Jay Hill wrote in a letter to Solicitor General Lawrence MacAuley. "The Canadian government makes it as easy as possible for drugs to enter our country," said Hill, MP for the Prince George-Peace River. "Clearly, with good reasons, the U.S. considers Canada a drug threat." The web site of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's fact book on Canada lists the country as an "illicit producer of cannabis for the domestic drug market," Hill said. The Reform party has for years called on the government to toughen up Canada's drug laws and to spend more money on the problem, he said. But the Liberal government has left Canada's peace officers under-funded and ill-equipped, he wrote. "The RCMP has been gutted, our Customs Officers are told that their first priority is to collect taxes, and drug dealers are given conditional sentences." Which way????
Didn't I see a report earlier that said more drugs went from teh USA to Canada instead of what this article says?Somehow I am really getting confused by the lack of consistency by the reporting media.CheersTomP.S. Not this service it is the news/gov't media that really confuses me.
