San Jose, Calif. -- NBC11 explores the human side of the medical marijuana controversy Thursday at 10:00 p.m. in "Pot & Politics: California vs. the United States." NBC11 News crews spent several months documenting the lives of people affected by the battle over medical marijuana: the cancer patient trying to cope with the pain of his terminal illness; the Drug Enforcement Agency official who has to live with threats of violence; the activist who continues to distribute the drug even after multiple arrests.
"We discovered that at the heart of this political issue are very moving personal stories," said Jim Sanders, Vice-President of News and Operations for NBC11. "For one hour, we look not at the policies but at the people on both sides of this very emotional issue." Since 1996, when Californians voted to allow marijuana use for medicinal purposes, the state and federal governments have been at odds over the legality of the California proposition. "Pot & Politics: California vs. the United States," takes viewers inside the medical marijuana movement, and inside the DEA office charged with enforcing federal law. "Pot & Politics: California vs. the United States," is hosted by NBC11 anchors Allen Denton and Lisa Kim.NBC11 is owned by NBC Universal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production, and marketing of entertainment, news, and information to a global audience. About California
We aren't getting news about our issue because of the presidential hoop la going on. Many issues are getting pushed to the side. California stepped out for us years ago with Prop 215 and have blazed a trail. We will benefit from the good they've done and when mistakes were made we learn from them too.

local to global
The whole issue has been framed and prosecuted as USA vs. CA from the beginning. California is the battleground. When is the last time "Patients and Caregivers Arrested in DEA Raid" appearded as a headline describing a town in any other state. "NBC 11 is owned by NBC Universal, one of the worlds leading media and entertainment companies in the developement, production, and marketing of entertainment, news, and information to a global audience."As far as who will or will not see this "debate" better check with whatever multinational is brining NBC 11 to your home. I'm sorry to be such a cynic, but just observing how the debate was so quickly and effectively shut down about Montel (except for forums such as this), chills my blood.

This show will be on California Medical Marijuana Issues. That's why many of us won't get it. It is a local story for those in that particular area.

USA vs. tree huggin' hippies et. al.
Last time I checked The majority of the western half of the country has medcan laws, a smattering of states in the northeast and midwest have or are preparing to offer some protection for patients, both Alaska and Nevada have been on the forefront of actual regulation, and medcan laws have overwhelming support all across this land... Yet the issue is framed as California (you know, that wacky state that uses muscle beach to find a govenor) vs. THE UNITED STATES. Its not just political attack machines that have learned to frame the rhetoric to ensure a lose/lose situation for anyone questioning the status quo.
Maybe demanding an explanation for what "is" is, is not such a stupid question.

EJ, "It won't be much longer now."
Coincidentally, I was just praying one of my "When, Lord? How much longer?" prayers. Then your post came up. I hope that's the answer.

Our timeline and the Republican timeline
I am hearing all the time that some very powerful and rich Republicans have in mind that Arnold Schwarzenegger will run for President in 2008.The success of this plan would require two things:1. A change in the Constitution to allow a foreign born person to serve.2. Reconciliation between California and Washington on medical marijuana.Arnold could not possibly run for President while he's the governor of a state that willingly goes against federal law.Obviously the state law is not going to change. That toothpaste is waaay out of the tube now. It's never going back. That only leaves one option for the Arnold supporters in Washington. The clock is ticking, folks. It won't be much longer now.

I hope we will be able to see this program even if we don't live in California. Maybe it will be put on line if it doesn't air in other areas. I sure hope so.
