Posted by FoM on July 08, 1999 at 12:16:48 PT Mercury News Staff Report Source: San Jose Mercury News Two men and a teenager who deputies said were watering and weeding a marijuana crop -- worth $3 million if fully grown -- were arrested in a Pajaro Valley pot patch early Wednesday by Santa Cruz County sheriff's narcotics officers. Rafael Campos, 22, and Sergio Pena, 24, were booked into county jail on marijuana-cultivation charges. A 17-year-old was taken to juvenile hall. All three told deputies they lived and worked in the San Jose area.Officers said the three were weeding and watering a large garden about 100 yards off Hecker Pass Road east of Watsonville when officers arrived before dawn. Marijuana was planted in rows among other crops, officers said.The 595 pot plants deputies confiscated would have had an estimated street value of nearly $3 million at maturity, the sheriff's office said.Members of the sheriff's Marijuana Enforcement Team had observed the marijuana plants from an airplane flying over the area last month.
