WINNIPEG -- Not paying the rent didn't pay for the owners of a sophisticated dope-growing operation.
Around noon Monday the building owner went to collect the rent or change the locks. What he saw was a giant marijuana garden - an 800-plant operation.Cops are wondering why someone would spend so much money setting up such a system, then forget the rent."They did so many things well and then forgot to take care of simple business," said Insp. Gary Walker, head of the vice unit.No arrests have been made.Sgt. Dale Ridley didn't know the amount of rent in arrears or how long the operation had been in operation, but he said the plants were at least two months old."It was as nice a grow (operation) as we've seen in the city," said Ridley."Without a doubt, the crop wasn't the first and wouldn't be the last grown there. This was as nice as they get and they were going to receive a bang for their buck."The house had a modern air circulation system and self-watering and feeding systems, said Ridley. The growers also managed to tap the power grid in a way that wouldn't be reflected on the Winnipeg Hydro meter."Whoever ran the operation spent a lot of time there," said Ridley. "They had a television, bedding and food in the fridge."
