A shuttered Oakland medical marijuana club filed a lawsuit against the city Tuesday, saying it was unfairly denied a permit under an ordinance that cracked down on a downtown enclave known as "Oaksterdam." The suit, filed by Dragonfly Alternative Healing Clinic in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland, seeks a court order that would give the club a permit to continue operating this year "without threat of civil and/or criminal sanctions."
Dragonfly, at 1727 Telegraph Ave., closed shortly after June 1, when a new ordinance took effect that allows the city to regulate marijuana clubs and limit their number to four. The club reopened for about a month to serve its patients -- then closed again Friday after the city reportedly threatened to penalize the building owner. The new limits adopted by the Oakland City Council broke up a cluster of about a dozen downtown marijuana clubs -- collectively known as "Oaksterdam" -- by forcing them to operate at least 1,000 feet apart. Three medical marijuana clubs have received permits from the city. Clubs without permits could face closure or remain open as cafes, without selling marijuana under Proposition 215, the state initiative that voters approved in 1996 that legalized medicinal cannabis with a doctor's recommendation. Dragonfly's closure has harmed patients who say they have a proven medical necessity for the drug, the suit said. More Hope
Hope, here's the rest of Max's memory aid: "I before E except after C, and when pronounced as hay, as in neighbor and weigh."Mind you, there's an exception to every rule, which is why I think I was a better speller in eighth grade than I am now.Cheers.

Max Flowers
This is from an email from the Kerry Campaign I got last night. My husband needs the VA if he gets sick. We don't have insurance. Read this please:***This will be an incredibly close election. With more than one million veterans in Ohio, it's no wonder the "Swift Boat Veterans for Bush" is spreading their lies around our state. What this group isn't telling you is that George Bush has proposed to shortchange veterans health care needs in Ohio by $103.1 million. And it doesn't stop there. The VA hospital in Brecksville, OH that 48,000 veterans depend upon is on the chopping block. If re-elected, George Bush plans to cut an additional $36 million from Ohio veterans' services.

I was trying to recall that little rhyme.I should write it a hundred times...and maybe I'll find it easier in the old brain files.

A thought about republicans and protest
Doesn't it ever get to the Rethugs that there are hardly any of their own who demonstrate angrily against the dems, yet there are like millions of angry dems? Truly pissed off, practically foaming at the mouth, this multitude of inflamed, shockingly ANGRY dems??Are they so deep in denial that they don't see the obvious physiological truth that people don't go to the trouble to do that kind of thing unless there have been grevious offenses done? Can they really just turn off that reality like a switch, and ignore it, believing their way is right? If so, Bush is right, there *are* millions of people who need immediate psychiatric care---his own BASE!

Hope (the I and E thing)
There's a popular little memory rhyme long used for this by teachers, and it goes:"I before E, except after C"It works 99% of the time.

It sounds like I don't read news except about Cannabis. That's not true. I read news about the elections and news about music. Those are the topics I try hard to keep up with. The elections because of it being so important and music because I just enjoy that kind of news. There I feel better. When I said cannabis that includes hemp too.Tonight at 8 PM on the Discovery Channel ( Direct TV Programming ) they will have a Bob Dylan show from back in the 60s. I'll watch that for sure.

"news is slow"
no way!I remember when MAP was having a huge day when ten articles could be found.Days with nothing...lots of days with one or two or three.I used to easily read them all thoroughly. Can't do it now, there are so many. You said, “I have no idea why they are having a RNC since it's Bush who is running. I hope we see more of the protests on the news this coming week rather then RNC stuff. I want to hear what the people have to say. It's seems like a waste of money to me but I look at things in a practical way. Politics just aren't practical. If I was running for president I'd be embarassed to have to spend tons of money to get me elected.”I agree with you.

         A L
No men living are more worthy to be trusted than those who toil up from poverty; none lese inclined to take or touch aught which they have not honestly earned. Let them beware of surrendering a political power which they already possess and which, if cur-rendered, will surely be used to close the doors of advancement against such as they, and to fix new disabilities and burdens upon them till all of liberty shall be lost." - Abraham Lincoln.

Hi Hope
I've looked for news but so far I haven't found any to post. I think the news is slow because of school starting but more because of the RNC. I know that I'll be glad when the convention is over. There are at least 250,000 protesters scheduled in New York and they have 15,000 police on duty. I have no idea why they are having a RNC since it's Bush who is running. I hope we see more of the protests on the news this coming week rather then RNC stuff. I want to hear what the people have to say. It's seems like a waste of money to me but I look at things in a practical way. Politics just aren't practical. If I was running for president I'd be embarassed to have to spend tons of money to get me elected. This truly is the calm before the storm. PS: My satellite is cutting out because of the weather so it will take me longer to post or comment.

Seige. I have trouble with i before e or is it, e before i, or both? I need to dedicate a few brain cells to "securing" that in my brain files.

Good morning
I wish more people would post in the mornings. As I get ready for the day, I refresh the comments screens several times to see if anyone has posted anything. Of course it always disappoints me when they don't. I know I'm not the only one doing this. I've been so disappointed so long this morning...that I'm going to post to break the spell.Maybe someone out there will be a tiny bit less disappointed just knowing that someone else is watching the board.Blessed day!

ASA Alert
COME TO DC AND DEMAND HHS RESCHEDULE MARIJUANA IMMEDIATELY AT RALLY OCT 5th!August 25, 2004Hello Friends and supporters,Americans for Safe Access is co-hosting two days of events in DC October 4-5th with the Cancer, MS, Chronic Pain, Hep C, Mood Disorder, Seniors, and HIV/AIDS Patients Unions. This includes a rally at HHS's headquarters in DC on Tuesday the 5th called "Our Health is in YOUR Hands". We are asking all patients and patient advocates to join us in DC to demand that HHS do their job and call for the IMMEDIATE RESCHEDULING of MARIJUANA. Let's remind the country that Medical Marijuana is health care issue, not a legal issue or a legislative issue (which is where HHS's lack of action has pushed it). It is time for us to put the face that belongs on this issue: OUR HEALTH! We can do this by mobilizing patients, advocates, and the medical community to join together! The conversation this nation needs to be having is how do we get this effective medicine to those who need it, not whether or not marijuana is medicine. The only way we will get there is if we demand it! The beginning of October will be one of our last chances to get this issue out into the political arena before November. We must send a strong message in DC that the next administration will be forced to deal with marijuana as medicine, and the force is organized and ready for action! Please join patients in DC on October 4th & 5th and demand action from HHS, our health can not wait!
