Santa Cruz -- In between battling illness, death and federal agents, members of an area medical-marijuana cooperative say they have to have a little fun. For the second straight year, members of the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana and friends will do just that. They’ll stage their annual WAMMFest Labor Day weekend, on Sept. 5. The event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at San Lorenzo Park in Santa Cruz.
The chosen date is no accident — it commemorates the anniversary of WAMM’s garden getting uprooted in 2002 by agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration.Instead of marking it as a gloomy day, the collective wants to celebrate."From that incident came a greater understanding of the need for patients to have access," said WAMM co-founder Valerie Corral. "It gives us an opportunity to celebrate and transform that experience that was dark and frightening." The event will feature the usual Central Coast festival offerings — music, food, vendors. Expect plenty of hemp-based goods, but unless you’re a patient with a doctor’s recommendation, leave the nugs at home. Organizers emphasize non-medical toking remains illegal. They say the festival is intended to be a family-friendly gathering. Last year’s event drew an estimated 1,000 people. This year’s special feature will be a dunking booth featuring a faux U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. While the day is about celebration, WAMM continues a legal fight in federal courts. No one has been charged in connection with the 167 plants federal agents uprooted two years ago, and the group has sought an order to return the plants. That as yet has not been successful, but the cooperative did succeed in getting an injunction against the DEA in April barring any future raids of its garden. WAMM planted its garden anew in May.For more information, visit: http://www.wamm.org/Source: Santa Cruz Sentinel (CA)Author: Brian Seals, Sentinel Staff WriterPublished: August 17, 2004 Copyright: 2004 Santa Cruz SentinelContact: editorial santa-cruz.comWebsite: http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/Related Articles & Web Sites:WAMMhttp://www.wamm.org/Pictures From WAMM Protesthttp://freedomtoexhale.com/eventpics.htmWoman Has Led Fight for MMJ To New Highhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread18873.shtmlWAMM Holds Benefithttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread17305.shtmlWAMM Plans Family Day http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread17153.shtml

Shishaldin
You must live in a place that is like what my Heaven would be. Someday we will be able to travel and come out to your area. We must change the laws before I can get away then it will be time to celebrate! My husband and I really want to do a trip like I mentioned. I don't know anything about the Bridge School concerts but it would be great to be able to see all the wonders in Santa Cruz and see a benefit concert too. My sisters have been to foreign countries but I never wanted to leave America. I've always wanted to see as much of America as I could. I have been to most states except the extreme north west. Don't worry about leaving. You son has 4 more years and things will hopefully be different as far as the war goes by then. If it still is bad I understand leaving. This war has a voice so it might not be as bad as Vietnam was. I'm hoping.http://www.bridgeschool.org/events.html

Sweet Home Santa Cruz
As a resident of Santa Cruz (actually Capitola, right next to SC), I must give a hearty "Aye" to moving to this area. I've lived here about 12 years, and it really is paradise to me and I would imagine to most, if not all CNews'ers. (Asscrotch/Johnny Pee/Chimp/Cheney-lovers need not apply). Why?Pros:
*Many many cannabists! Glass blowing shops are doing brisk business.*LEO presence is focused on keeping the peace, not making easy pot busts.*Friendly folks all over the place!*The Pacific Ocean, more specifically, the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. Just beautiful...*Redwood trees! Hiking, biking, or just meditating in them, it's magical. Come on down, FoM! I brought my cousins from AZ to see them, and I'll never forget the look of wonder in their eyes.*Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Jose, and San Francisco all within an hour or two's drive.*Local farms in Watsonville and nearby Salinas area means lots of fresh produce!*Lots of different cultural cuisine to choose from when you want to eat out.*It's a wonderful area to raise kids, too. Mine's been here most of his life, and he's a happy camper. Lots of progressive, positive thinkers in my son's group of friends. (My friends, too!)Cons:
*Median price for a house in Santa Cruz county for 2004 is $606,268(!). The average is hovering close to $675k(!!). Yep, I'm still renting...*Highway 1 needs another lane in both directions through Santa Cruz and Capitola to fight gridlock, especially during the summer tourist season.*Jobs are kinda tight, but the situation seems to be getting better.*ummmmm, well, that's about it.Did I say I really love living here? My heart breaks when I think about this upcoming election, however. I vowed that if the Chimp was re-Selected for 4 more years, I'd pack up and move my family away from my beloved beach community to the Great Green North in BC. My boy's 14, and I won't have him become cannon fodder for the wars of the Greedy Oil Plutocracy.I'll do what I can in the meantime to see that I can keep my family here, where we belong...Peace and Strength,ShishaldinPS If anyone wants more first-hand info about SC, feel free to drop a line :)

Sam Adams
You should definitely move to (northern) CA, and why not Santa Cruz? For the reasons you just mentioned, and many others.Every day I feel privileged to live in northern CA... the epicenter, in many ways, of the medical cannabis movement. (Which is not to diminish the critical work being done in other states.)These are heady and important days for this cause, and living in this region and being involved, one has the feeling of history being made and being right in the middle of it. I have friends who live in central coast CA, only 4.5 hours down the 101 from here, and they are only just now starting to get over their amazement about the things I've been telling them about Oakland and SF etc. That's how different things can be in different parts of the state despite a state law designed to make it all uniform. And the poor folks in southern CA---well they're still suffering under police and sheriff departments who routinely and illegally refuse to follow CA state law.Definitely move here Sam, but don't locate yourself any further south than Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz
I've been thinking about moving lately and I've seriously been thinking - why not Santa Cruz? Any place where they hand out medical MJ at city hall is OK by me. You can go surfing right in front of the main drag downtown.A pro-active local government that supports your rights is probably one of the best protections against the police state we're in right now. Raiding or attacking a local government is one line the DEA and feds seem wary of crossing.Congrats to WAMM and happy harvest! I can't wait to see some pictures next month.

deleriously happy
I'm sure they all are to have such an event. The woefully misinformed John Ashcroft should show up and sit on the dunking chair himself. He would end up deleriously happy after a few hundred splashes into the water tank.Hats off to WAMM. They know how to seize and save the day.

Hey, Max!
That "effigy" sounds like it might be someone actually doing an imitation and standing in for the Czar.I'm counting on hearing how you dunked the guy, though. Here's wishing WAMM great success.

Someday!
I would love to visit WAMM and then see the big Redwood trees and see where Neil Young's ranch is. We would stay at the Compassion Flower Inn while we were there. I mentioned that to my husband last night and he thought that would be great and maybe someday we will be able to do that.Santa Cruz Bud and Breakfast is for Mainstream Too: http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread18928.shtmlLyrics from Neil Young's Bandit:Someday You'll Find Everything You're Looking For

I want to go...
...and ask if I can beat the effigy to a pulp instead of dunking it.Seriously though, I want to go, it sounds like a great event. And since I have my recommendation, I'm bringin' nugs, dang it.
