Chicago -- The Pharmaceutical Press, the publications division of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, with offices in London and Chicago, has published the first edition of The Medicinal Uses of Cannabis and Cannabinoids. The publication is an authoritative review of the development of cannabis-based medicines and their applications in a wide range of therapeutic areas. It has been edited by Dr Geoffrey W Guy (Executive Chairman, GW Pharmaceuticals), Dr Philip J Robson (Senior Research Fellow, Department of Psychiatry, Oxford University and Medical Director, GW Pharmaceuticals) and Dr Brian A Whittle (Scientific Director, GW Pharmaceuticals).
The publication focuses on the research, development and clinical trial results of the cannabis-based medicinal extract (CBME) Sativex for the relief of chronic pain in MS sufferers, currently under review by the MHRA for registration. It also covers a broad spectrum of subjects including the history of cannabis use, its growth and morphology, the discovery and pharmacology of cannabinoid receptors in mammalian tissues, the development and use of synthetic cannabinoids, and the legal and forensic aspects of cannabis within the international community. Further chapters explore the research into the basic science of cannabis and cannabinoids and highlight promising applications of CBMEs in the treatment of epilepsy, schizophrenia, bladder dysfunction and as broad-spectrum relief agents in patients with AIDS or cancer. Professor Tony Moffat, the Society's Chief Scientist, said: "This publication demonstrates the scientific credentials of cannabis and cannabinoids as medicines. It is hoped that the evidence presented will help to change the attitude of health professionals towards cannabis-based medicines and enable the international legislative change required to allow further collaborative research into prescription medicines." Proven medical value now.
This report shoots down the main argument of the prohibitionists that cannabis has no medical value.

The scientist at GW
I think this to be as historic as the Canadian Senate Report was two years ago about this time. The science got its first condensation from the experts of cannabis for medicine. I have to really study on ordering this report. A person is coming that will carry that report like a Bible and take to the role of traveling crusader. The report being published has a bearing on how much longer the British government can hold GW extracts off the market. We were led to believe that approval would come last year, then spring and now it is August. This report marks the beginning of the beginning of real science overcoming the modern medieval era of what is science by politics and if political science did not have a previous meaning, we would call all of this political science. This report and Paul Peterson will make an awesome couple.

Additional synopsis from Amazon-UK
In recent years, cannabis research has moved beyond its use as an illegal recreational drug to consider its potential as a therapeutic substance, particularly in serious chronic illnesses such as multiple sclerosis. Although there is a considerable body of primary literature relating to the medicinal use of cannabis, much of the published work concerns anecdotal reports. This title describes all the contemporary research findings relating to the medicinal use of cannabis and cannabinoids, and reports on the pharmacology, formulation, safety and efficacy of cannabis as a therapeutic agent. This should be a useful reference for pharmacists, doctors, pharmacologists and all other healthcare professionals with an interest in pain control. Also, click the cover photo for a large version.http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0853695172
