Driving into work this week, there's Steve Earle live on Bret Saunders' morning show on KBCO, previewing two new songs: The Revolution Starts Here and Rich Man's War. At virtually the same time, Mike Mills from R.E.M. is on TV, talking about the Vote For Change tour in October, when his band will hit swing states with Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Dave Matthews, James Taylor, Pearl Jam, the Dixie Chicks, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, and more, in an attempt to vote George W. Bush out of office.
Meanwhile, Fogerty has released a new antiwar single, Déjà vu (All Over Again) that's getting airplay. Prince has more quietly released, through his Web site, The United States of Division, which joins previously released antiwar songs by the Beastie Boys, R.E.M., Mellencamp, Ani DiFranco and more. Whatever your views on the election, it's fascinating to watch music begin to have a social relevance again. Never have so many artists on both sides of an issue spoken out so fervently. This sort of social activism through music is nothing new, in one sense. There have been plenty of big benefits over the years. Many of the names popping up this time have been involved in the No Nukes concerts, Live Aid, Farm Aid, Neil Young's Bridge School benefits and more. Yet this time around the stakes are different; these artists now risk alienating a large portion of their fan base. Compared with the current election, those other benefits are uncontroversial. Who is going to lose a significant number of fans for taking a stance against nuclear power, against world hunger, or in favor of family farms and specialized schools for the handicapped? This election is a flashpoint for emotion. The day the tour was announced, the official Springsteen chatboards went ballistic with invective, with some fans vowing a lifetime boycott. Yet despite the controversy, an unprecedented number of artists have raised their voices. Elvis Costello pointedly played the Dixie Chicks before his concerts last year to support their controversial remarks about the president. He also makes pointed references to the Bush administration in the liner notes to his just-released reissue of Goodbye Cruel World. Neil Young allowed Michael Moore to use Keep On Rockin' in the Free World in the closing segment of Fahrenheit 9/11. We've all heard about Linda Ronstadt by now, of course. After that Las Vegas incident, the Eagles' Don Henley began dedicating Desperado to her in his shows, with the ensuing cheers and boos. It's a different stance than he took just a year ago, when he told the News there was no point in speaking out against the war because "until the hysteria dies down and the jingoism and xenophobia all die down, there's not much point in saying anything." It's not just the old guard speaking out. Rock Against Bush, Vol. 2, is coming out next week with tracks from Yellowcard, No Doubt, Green Day, Bad Religion, Foo Fighters, Rancid and 22 more bands. Radiohead struck one of the first blows last year, naming its album Hail to the Thief, a commentary on the Florida voting controversy. NOFX jumped in early as well, with a pointed, satirical song and video titled Idiot Son of An (expletive). With all the songs out there, will commercial radio play them - especially considering the message sent by the FCC crackdown on indecency earlier this year? The Fogerty song has gotten limited airplay, but the rest are, for all intents and purposes, MIA. Instead, it's the songs considered pro-Bush that have been hits: Darryl Worley's Have You Forgotten and Toby Keith's Courtesy of The Red White And Blue (The Angry American) among them. The Vote For Change tour is sure to spur a response from the numerous artists who are Bush supporters - Worley, Keith, Ted Nugent, Britney Spears, Martina McBride, Sara Evans and the like. Nugent visited Iraq earlier this year, and artists such as Kid Rock have done the same. Tim McGraw gave our troops at Fort Carson a free concert last year. It'll be interesting to see if any of that coalesces as strongly as the antiwar side seems to have. For now, it's a fascinating but potentially explosive ride, where freedom of speech, artistic license, commerce, patriotism and politics are getting a historic workout. The Sounds of War:Antiwar songs have far outnumbered songs written in support of President Bush's policies. Many country singers have released a number of patriotic songs, but they aren't overtly about the war or Bush. Other recent antiwar songs recorded in response to the war in Iraq include: • Beastie Boys: In a World Gone Mad • Billy Bragg: The Price of Oil • Paula Cole: My Hero, Mr. President • Zach de la Rocha: March of Death • Ani DiFranco: Self Evident • Michael Franti and Spearhead: Bomb the World • Lenny Kravitz: We Want Peace • Live: What Are We Fighting For? • John Mellencamp: To Washington • Willie Nelson: Whatever Happened to Peace on Earth • R.E.M.: The Final Straw • Cat Stevens: Peace Train In response, there are some pro-Bush songs: • Toby Keith: Courtesy of the Red White and Blue (The Angry American) • Clint Black: Iraq and Roll • Darryl Worley: Have You Forgotten • Warren Brothers: Hey Mr. President • Toby Keith: American Soldier Mark Brown is the pop music critic. This is why I thought Kenneth Lay was involved in the power problems in California. I really need to pay more attention to corporations and what they are doing. I find big corporation so distasteful that I tend to ignore the issues surrounding them. I make my sister upset when I root for the stock market to go down instead of up. Corporate greed really bothers me. I wouldn't mind if big companies made money but don't send our jobs out of the country or lay off people before medical benefits kick in. That happens alot around here. My husband lost a job years ago after 10 years with GE when they packed up and sent the work to Mexico. It hurt the town and many people who were dependent on those jobs.Bush's Dim Enron Excuses:

Hope, if even one tenth of the facts in the Straight Inc link are true, several Presidents and their appointees are or have been in an incredible conflict of interest regarding the War on Some Drugs. No wonder that their paid lackeys lie shamelessly. No wonder that Congress lacks the will to pursue a sensible drug policy. No wonder that the cannabis patients are dragged from the battlefield into the dank dungeons of privatized prisons. No wonder that care-givers are persecuted and their blessed herbs are confiscated and destroyed by paid thugs.

Ken Lay
http://www.thestraights.com/gop.htmKen Lay was on the board of regents for the infamous Mel and Betty Sembler's Straight...and all it's hideous offspring. The super rich running and ruining lives and being lauded for it...among themselves...is extremely disgusting.

I realized I really don't know what he was involved in. It shows how much I don't pay attention to some issues. Here's a link about him from the BBC. Kenneth Lay: A Fallen Hero: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1779445.stm

I don't know if he was involved in anything in Florida but he was one of the reasons they voted Davis out as Governor of California. I think I'm right but gosh I don't know. What makes me happy is that musicians from my favorite times are making music with a message. Steve Earles new CD called The Revolution Starts Now is number 87 at Amazon.com and it won't be released for a few more weeks. The Revolution Starts Now: http://www.artemisrecords.com/media/SteveEarle-TheRevolutionStartsNow.ram That's just pre-order sales. John Fogerty's new CD isn't even listed yet but what a powerful song. I know you are having problems with listening to music so here are the words. http://www.johnfogerty.com/main.phpDEJA VU (ALL OVER AGAIN)Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radioDid you try to read the writing on the wallDid that voice inside you say I've heard it all beforeIt's like Deja Vu all over againDay by day I hear the voices risingStarted with a whisper like it did beforeDay by day we count the dead and dyingShip the bodies home while the networks all keep scoreDid you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radioCould your eyes believe the writing on the wallDid that voice inside you say I've heard it all beforeIt's like Deja Vu all over againOne by one I see the old ghosts risingStumblin' 'cross Big MuddyWhere the light gets dimDay after day another Momma's cryingShe's lost her precious childTo a war that has no endDid you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radioDid you stop to read the writing at The WallDid that voice inside you sayI've seen this all beforeIt's like Deja Vu all over againIt's like Deja Vu all over again

AP: Crosby Skewers Enron, Lay on New CD
By Kristen HaysThe Associated PressFriday, August 13, 2004 HOUSTON - He was intimate with the counterculture in the 1960s and a Texas prison in the 1980s. Now the current decade has prompted David Crosby to train his pen and his voice on corporate crime _ primarily Enron and its founder, Kenneth Lay.The 5 1/2-minute song They Want It All that Crosby wrote for a new CD with Graham Nash, Crosby-Nash, faults corporate leaders for bleeding companies of money and ripping off employees and investors. On lyric says: "These people that they stole from whose lives they laid to waste/They should meet them all face to face/And explain just why their mama didn't teach them not to steal/If you want us to believe in justice, justice better be real."Neither Enron nor Lay are mentioned by name, but Crosby told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday, "It's about Enron, no question. When I introduce it, I say it's about Enron."The two-time inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said he was inspired by what he saw as plodding justice for Lay and other executives accused of crimes that led to Enron's collapse. "If they can bust me, they can bust him," Crosby said. "The law should work for everybody."Crosby, 62, a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, spent nearly a year in the Dallas County Jail and a Texas prison on a conviction of drug and gun possession charges. He was paroled in 1986 and the conviction was overturned more than a year later. Last month Crosby pleaded guilty to a gun charge in Manhattan and fined $5,000, after a March arrest on marijuana and gun possession charges at a New York hotel."I may have broken the law, but there weren't victims," Crosby said.Crosby, whose hits with Stills and Nash include Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Marrakesh Express and, with Neil Young, Teach Your Children and Our House, said his main function is to entertain rather than preach. But he said the fallout for Enron workers whose retirement savings evaporated upon the collapse made writing the song "a valid thing to do and I couldn't emotionally not do it."Michael Ramsey, Lay's main criminal lawyer, didn't immediately return calls for comment on the song.Earlier this week Ramsey described charges of conspiracy, fraud and lying to banks filed last month against Lay as "tissue-thin." Lay told The Associated Press last month he grieved for those hurt by Enron's fall and he didn't know some of his trusted executives were committing crimes.Enron shattered in December 2001 amid revelations of hidden debt, inflated profits and accounting trickery. Thousands of workers lost their jobs and company stock became worthless. The implosion was the first in a string of corporate scandals that shook Wall Street and investors throughout 2002.Crosby and Nash have performed They Want It All on their current tour with Stephen Stills. The duo plans to further promote "Crosby-Nash" with concerts later this year after the Crosby, Stills and Nash tour _ which has no dates in Texas _ wraps in September.Eric Eden, a Crosby fan and a former Enron computer programmer, said Friday he was "thrilled" by Crosby's song."David Crosby has always had the ability to insert huge meaning and understanding in a few words of poetry. By not mentioning Enron specifically, he allows everyone to relate to his lyrics and take them as their own," Eden said. But a review of a July 18 Crosby, Stills and Nash concert in Pittsburgh published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette called "They Want It All" the "low point of the evening" with cliched lyrics. The song, written last year, also has an outdated verse: "They don't get prosecuted, don't even get charged/They're somewhere in the sunbelt living it large/The government says we can't prove they did it at all/Besides they've got these underlings who're ready to take the fall."Thirty individuals have been charged since the government launched its investigation more than two and a half years ago. Most are former mid-level managers or alleged conspirators outside Enron. But so far this year those from Enron's top echelon _ Lay, former CEO Jeffrey Skilling and former top accountant Richard Causey _ have been indicted on charges including conspiracy and fraud. All three have pleaded innocent.

I never was able to watch videos or listen to music on line until I got the satellite. This particular computer is old and simple compared to the new versions of Windows. The more bells and whistles the more problems I think. Maybe someday computers will be as stable as TVs are now but I don't think it will be for a few more years.

song didn't play at all. It kept loading...or NOT loading.
It got stuck at 68% and after a half hour or so it still had not loaded past 68%. The trouble with this computer causes videos...most of the time to blue screen on me. Aaarggh. Anyway. At this point I can still get online and communicate.Thanks. Maybe I can try it again later and it will work.Don Ho? Hmm. Is there a written interview or anything about it anywhere that you know of?Thanks.I seldom can bear to watch tv...I use the music stations. Four years ago I promised myself to ignore politics as much as possible this round. I can't change it or make everything right. I'm going to listen here and there and read here and there... and I expect to vote. My goal in avoiding political speeches and discussions is to save myself as much useless misery as possible.

The whole song doesn't play but jumps to his web site. If that's what you mean it does it for me too. The news is slow so we watched Greendale and the Making of Greendale again. There is intense fighting in Iraq and we get to learn more about the cases they follow like Bryant and Peterson. I won't watch that stuff. Music On! TV News Off! LOL!

My husband really likes trains. He has a few very old Lionel train sets. They don't get set up though. Neil Young sold a limited edition of a special Greendale set for about $500. ( He's a part owner of Lionel ) As far as I know the limited edition sold out in a day or two. There were only 500 made. It was way to pricey for us though.http://www.lionel.com/Products/ProductNavigator/getproduct.cfm?ProductNumber=6-30002

Good luck to you. One thing I am learning from my computer experience is patience. I'm not a patient person when I'm trying to get a project done but computers don't care how I feel about my own projects. Finally I am learning since I started this journey in the fall of 96 is to take it one thing at a time until you find the problem. I put a hit counter on my FTE page and it was buggy so I removed it. I've had this particular computer for over 3 and a half years and it still is doing a good job. The satellite has helped because many of my problems were related to my isp connections in the past. Listen to kapt and good luck to you. I hope you will be able to listen to Peace Train soon.

To clean your box of most spywares
Those sites are dirty, in that they stick things on your box whether you like them to or not. They're spywares, and they cause your system to become 'sick', like ticks do to a dog.If you think your system is infected go to http://majorgeeks.com/ and then go to the left side bar and click on "Spyware Tools" and download CWShredder, SpyBot Search and Destroy and AdAware6. They are all free and don't have spyware components packed in them (A common dirty trick many "You have been infected with spyware!" pop-ups do when you click on their 'cleaner' offers). Get the updates from the links on the programs after they launch. Then run CWShredder , then SpyBot then AdAware in that order, reboot and run them again. It should clean out many of the spyware 'bloodsuckers' that will slow your system down.

I went to a Catholic School. The High School was a real mansion. Luden ( Luden's Cough Drops) donated the mansion to the church and we enjoyed it. We had a Wurlitzer Juke Box in the cafeteria and we played Eve of Destruction a lot. They never removed it but when the Nuns found out the words to Louie Louie they removed that one real quick! LOL!

What we hear on the radio
Growing up in Texas and listening to the radio like any teenager, I was never to hear Alice's Restaurant until well after the Vietnam War. I resented it then, and I resent it now.

rchandar
I agree with you. We won't be going to any of the concerts because we really would only want to see Neil Young and he doesn't seem to be in the line up. I read where people said because he is a Canadian that could be why. I know this tour will be big and hopefully raise a lot of money. We don't hear good songs like What Ever Happened To Peace on Earth or Peace Train or any of the songs. I asked my husband when he is on the road if they play these songs. He said no they don't. That's really depressing that we can hear of an inspiring anti war song in this day and age and can't hear it! Thank goodness we at least had great anti-war songs back during the Vietnam War.

so lose the ignorant fans
i'm behind them all the way--i mean, "lifelong boycott" for opposing bush? those are the same "fans" who think "Born In The USA" is a patriotic song that Reagan can use! While we're at it, let's lose the fans who've identified with Wrangler's misinterpretation of "Fortunate Son" as being a flag-waving, patriotic song! (They cut out the part "when the band plays hail to the chief/they point the cannon at you" and kept the 1st stanza "some folks are meant to wave the flag, they're red white and blue").fans like that aren't WANTED by these groups!!! Drop 'em!!!--rchandar

Virgil, I promise I don't mean to be argumentative
Discussing the bumper sticker is what I hope I'm doing. Not arguing.

fear factor
antagonizing dangerous mean people. Maybe a pledge or motto or chant, but a bumper sticker would be asking for harrassment. Would it not?

Shoe's of a different color
Virg,--your idea of shoes marks your efforts to reclaim your soul, your country and your land, but be assured, even if you strapped a large wooden crucifix on your shoulders, the only response you would get is a spot in the local hospital. This political climate is brewing something more than Bush, if you can imagine, all these famous rock n' roll people who have decided to speak out in this current election, imagine when the dust settles, and all these people are tried for treason, when the day comes, that these rockers, are in the muddled courts, defending their lives, against this facade of religion.I personally stay away from the Christian religion, for it has the propensity to find "us"-we as the problem and not the forces of existence as the real culprits. The witch hunts and other Christian persecutions in history have only made me see that Christianity in the hands of children, is like matches or guns.If these ignorant Christian "thugs" continue to have power, they will further malign and consume our world.Mr. Epis, will hopefully be freed, and soon, the movement that has moved so many true Christians, will breath a breath of clarity, a breath that will ignite the march towards the release of the fallen, who rot in the prisons that we all had a hand in making."Silver of moon and gold Of sun are glances rolled From Thy great eyes; Thy visage beaming tender Over the stars and skies, Doth to warm life surprise Thy Universe. The worlds are filled with wonder" -Gita"6.81": And how should I fear what you have set up (with Him), while you do not fear that you have set up with Allah that for which He has not sent down to you any authority; which then of the two parties is surer of security, if you know?"Mat 6:8 Then do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask Him. *Grin*Some of those old times are best over. At the reception the bride's dad asked me where I'd been. He thought it was funny. You have to laugh about it, but it's one of those things that doesn't necessarily make you feel like the "sharpest tool in the shed".

My husband did the same thing except when he walk into where he keeps his truck the guys stood around in a circle and his boss pointed at my husband's feet and said to him why are you wearing two different shoes? All the guys busted up laughing then! Since you had a similar problem I thought I'd mention ours too. ! LOL!

Sorry, Virgil
Wishing not to offend you, my dear Cyber friend, but the “big idea” seems like a relatively crummy idea to me. It happens that I found myself attending a wedding very important to me on a dark gloomy day and as I crossed the street to the church, youngsters in tow, I looked down to see I had two lovely, otherwise, identical pumps on. One was black and one was brown. It was embarrassing. The shoes were so elegant and so well made, that I had the same pair in black, brown, and I think, dark blue. Without turning on the closet light, I slipped on the shoes and headed out the door. When I realized the predicament I was in, after seeing my shoes in the brighter light of day, as I looked down, being careful of my footing in slick soled high heels on the slick brick pavement of the street, I felt more than a little distracted and confidence challenged. No one would have asked why I was wearing two different colored shoes to an important event for fear of embarrassing me...or worse...to ridicule me.Slipping away from the crowd I fled to my house in time to return, albeit, a bit late, for the reception.I do not wish to do it again.Forgive me, Dear Virgil. It’s so right to give thought to ways to bring attention to our cause, but surely, some ideas, even yours, occasionally, have to fall into the realm of less than brilliant. Surely?

Make Cannabis #1
Thanks a lot everybody. Here I give up my big idea to wear two noticeably different shoes and/or socks and not only do I get no acknowledgement for my idea, I cannot even recruit one taker that can give an account of some real goddamned activism.I cannot do it because I do not exist. Then again, I can do it anytime and with any consequence because I do not exist. So, in about an hour I am going to walk through some of the big malls in Hickory and see if I get noticed. Luckily, it is sales tax holicay, in NC and SC and there is no sales tax on the pairs of white tennis shoes and black tennis shoes I will wear. You do know it is still two pair of shoes even if the pairs are of different color. Now a black shoe and a white shoe is the appropriate pair.I can tell you now what happened of course, not existing and all, but I would not want to bore you. But, you say, Virgil, we might think you brilliant if you could strategize us a new bumper sticker, instead of the old “Cannabis Prohibition is a fraud.” I am just too far ahead of my time. So, why should I send something back to you to speed your recovery from treason? Yeah, that treason is a pretty terrible thing, especially knowing how they are using the ignorant against abandoning the worst way possible to deal with substance abuse. It is clear what is wrong. The damned reform movement to usher in harm reduction for cannabis has no mission statement. There are some bumper sticker slogans worthy of thought including Free Cannabis For Everyone” But no. That is just not good enough for you and your mission statement ways. Here it is then, in honor of our Cannabian Friends to the North that have thrashed prohibition of possession and cultivation- Make Cannabis #1 Yeah, I know you don’t think it is brilliant, but that shows how defective you are as a reformer/patriot.
If you want to reform anything, you should have a black/white pair of shoes and a “Make Cannabis #1 tee shirt. We do have problems with substance abuse with alcohol and tobacco use with a need to see a reduction in consumption. It seems I am the only one that has ever said that cannabis use needs to double as soon as possible, which is pretty sad from your movement to leave such conclusions to people that do not exist.’’That is what your “Make Cannabis #1” tee shirt and bumper sticker mean. It means get real and let’s reduce the demons of alcohol and tobacco as the most used non-food type habits and let’s lift laughing grass up there where it belongs. Cannabis needs to be number 1. It is its rightful place. That is what the movement for harm reduction needs to accomplish. Now, if you do not see how brilliant I am, you are really dumb. I am not offended, because I do not exist.Excuse me; I must go turn some heads and Make Cannabis #1. I’ll toke to that. Now, show me the movie.
