VANCOUVER While most of the country rang with the sounds of the national anthem, in Vancouver, some were singing a different song July 1 -- O Cannabis!
In what's become an annual celebration, more than 300 protesters gathered at Vancouver Art Gallery on Canada Day, calling for the decriminalization of marijuana. The determined, but very relaxed, demonstrators repeated the same message as years past: "It should be legal 'cause it's not harming anyone, I don't think, and if we do it in a peaceful manner, no one should care." "I don't smoke pot, but I support the cause and the fact that people should have the right to do what they want with their life and their bodies." "Because marijuana is pretty harmless, I guess, it's like alcohol."Most of the people at this rally say they'll come again next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. They say they'll keep coming until Canada's lawmakers decide it isn't be a crime to smoke, possess or sell marijuana. Web Posted Fri Jul 2 10:58:16 1999 Copyright © 1999 CBC All Rights Reserved
