San Francisco — Some San Francisco leaders say it's worth it to choose pot over pain when considering getting into the medical marijuana business. Some city leaders want to help nonprofit cooperatives grow medical marijuana by offering grants for land, cultivation and equipment. City officials have the voters on their side: Californians passed Proposition 215, which allows the city to look at ways to grow and distribute pot.
Also, the federal 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that cannabis clubs for the sick might be protected by the U.S. government. "I have a responsibility as a policy-maker here in San Francisco to make sure our citizens have access to their medicine, which is allowed them by state law, which was passed by a vote of the people," said city councilman Mark Leno. But it's unlikely the federal government will just sit back and watch; federal agents have already conducted raids around the Bay Area and could easily tie the city up in court or pull federal funding. "It's not just the one federal law, it's also again a 'schedule 1' drug, as recognized by the federal government and the FDA, meaning that it's classified as a narcotic that's subject to frequent potential abuses," said Josh Kriegel of the San Francisco Republican Party. Legal experts say helping grow and distribute pot could make San Francisco more liable for accidents and problems involving those high on city-sanctioned pot. Petard
That's where it would help if our governor in CA were a democrat, not a republican, but he is a republican which means he will likely stay in bed with, and not challenge, the repuglican-run administration.

Political Superstition
"It's not just the one federal law, it's also again a 'schedule 1' drug [Schedule One Lie], as recognized [concocted] by the federal government and the FDA, meaning that it's classified as a narcotic [NOT] that's subject to frequent potential abuses," said Josh Kriegel of the San Francisco Republican Party. No science here, only political superstition. ego transcendence follows ego destruction, California, you've got the power, you've got the numbers.

News Article from Reuters Health
Cannabis Use Linked to Early-Onset SchizophreniaMonday, April 12, 2004
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Among men suffering from schizophrenia, those who had used cannabis were much more likely to experience their first psychotic episode at an early age at, Dutch investigators report. Dr. Natalie D. Veen, from University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands, and colleagues looked at gender and cannabis use in 133 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Seventy patients were cannabis users and 97 patients were male. Male patients were significantly younger than female patients when they first became impaired socially or occupationally, when they first exhibited psychosis, and when they first experienced negative symptoms of schizophrenia, the team reports in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Cannabis users were also significantly younger when they experienced these three measures of dysfunction, compared with non-users. The two factors together meant that male cannabis users had their first psychotic episode a mean of 6.9 years earlier than those who did not use the drug. "Since early onset is associated with a poorer prognosis of the disorder, the relationship between cannabis use and the risk of developing an early-onset type of schizophrenia is an important focus for future research," Veen and colleagues conclude. Cali Taxes hold the key
Californians pay in more federal taxes than the State recieves back from D.C. every year. If San Fran and other Cali cities begin MMJ co-ops and the Feds try to retaliate by withholding Fed Funds, then Cali can simply refuse to continue to send in the Fed Tax $'s it collects on behalf of the Fed and spend the funds on the promises the Fed has made to them, essentially eliminating the middle man IRS. That could concievably end the Fed blackmail schemes used against all the states to coerce Fed demands to supercede State demands. Cali is one of the few states that could do it as it is one of a handful that pays in more than it recieves. He who controls the $ controls the power in the funding game. With all that coastline, Cali could could draw a really BIG line in the sand if they chose to do so.
