HALIFAX A fog hung over part of the Nova Scotia capital Thursday but it didn't roll in off the harbour. The haze was man made, by well over 500 people celebrating Cannabis Day on a soccer field on the grassy expanse behind Citadel Hill.
The sweet scent of marijuana dominated the fourth annual display of civil disobedience as hundreds openly toked up. The federal government has moved to sanction marijuana for medicinal use but most of those gathered Thursday wanted legal marijuana for recreational use as well. Speakers, live bands and activists were joined by merchants promoting everything from ice cream to a Halifax-produced beer called Sharp Angus Hemp Ale. John, a 17-year-old high school student, wouldn't give his last name when asked to describe his drug paraphernalia. "I just don't want my father reading it," he said, as he described a pipe he hand-made with blue Lego pieces and a pink straw. His friend Gina, also 17, said marijuana should be legalized because it was a better and more peaceful recreational drug than alcohol. Bruce Wark, a journalism professor at the University of King's College, told the mellow crowd that reporters should be writing more on the amount of public money wasted on investigating and charging citizens for simple drug use. "The local media love a drug bust and they eagerly report (the police's) inflated street values,"said Wark. Halifax regional police kept an eye on the benign protest and made nine small seizures but no charges were laid. Sgt. David Reynolds said police received no complaints. "This wasn't a big issue and we weren't going to turn it into a big issue," said Reynolds. He said Halifax officers consulted with other police forces across Canada to consider how to deal with the picnic. (Halifax Daily News)
