MANHATTAN An elaborate marijuana-growing operation spread over two homes and a field east of Lake Elbo was being inventoried Wednesday by Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Department deputies following a raid Tuesday night.
Ryan R. Leathers, 25, was arrested on suspicion of possession and cultivation of marijuana and not having a state drug tax stamp for what sheriff's officials called an intricate indoor and outdoor growing operation."In all my years I've never seen an operation this sophisticated," Chief Investigator Gerald Schmidt said. "It's probably the waste of a pretty good talent."On Wednesday afternoon, deputies were in the process of collecting more than 150 plants from two indoor propagation set-ups in homes a few miles apart and from a field located between the houses, which are about 5 miles northeast of Manhattan.Sheriff Tony Metcalf said the indoor hydroponic growing system was elaborate, with fans, timers, and lights that traveled back and forth along ceiling tracks.Metcalf said Kansas Bureau of Investigations officials on the scene estimated the value of some of the plants to be quite high."This guy had knowledge of how to do this," Metcalf said. "It was apparent by his expertise in this growing system. I overheard some of the narcotics guys say some of the plants were worth upwards of $3,000."An 18-year-old Manhattan woman was arrested at one of the homes. Her name wasn't released.Deputies seized a truck and an all-terrain vehicle, but Metcalf said the houses and land were owned by Leathers' father. The raid followed six weeks of surveillance that began with a tip from a private citizen. The investigation ended Tuesday night with a raid by a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter and officers from three law enforcement agencies. One neighbor said she worried a fugitive was in the area Tuesday night when she saw four unmarked cars and one marked car coming up Lake Elbo Road and then saw the helicopter circling."I assumed they were looking for somebody," the neighbor said. "But my husband asked the main officer if there was any danger or anything to worry about since we have small children."Metcalf said a rural setting or hidden location wasn't enough cover to thwart drug investigations."You're going to get caught," he said. "Somebody's going to see it." Pubdate : July 1st, 1999Copyright 1999 The Topeka Capital-Journal http://cjonline.com/stories/070199/kan_marijuana.shtml

How?

Might one inquire as to how cannabis news finds all these great marijuana stories?
