A new report says marijuana use on the Gold Coast is reaching an all-time high.
A study on drug use in south-east Queensland, by the Queensland University of Technology and various health agencies, has found an increasing number of young people on the Coast are using cannabis.Researcher Jeremy Davey says there are several reasons the Gold Coast is a prime area for drug abuse."The Gold Coast has a larger population of that surf culture, the nightclub scene," he said."The Gold Coast has a large tourist trade, the Gold Coast has a large nightclub scene."If you look at a nightclub scene, there's a lot of ecstasy use, a lot of amphetamine use, there's a lot of marijuana use, there's a lot of LSD us."ConferenceThe drugs issue will be under discussion at a national conference on the Gold Coast from tomorrow. The executive director of Life Education in Queensland believes exchanges of information on the latest ways of combating drugs are vital.Peter Fox says Life Education needs highly sophisticated educational techniques to combat the drug problem."The illegal drug trade is an absolutely huge international trade and the people behind that are highly sophisticated in marketing," he said."Therefore we have to counter that with highly sophisticated educational techniques to ensure that our young people are aware of the dangers of drug abuse and are motivated to avoid it as they grow older."
