A Phony War Defeats Free Speech

The beauty of Jefferson's marketplace of ideas is that it opens our society to all voices and all arguments, presuming the most persuasive will rise to the top. But those who promote the War on Drugs find this a dangerous concept. Drug reform makes too much sense and in recent years has been too compelling to voters. Already, seven states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana through voter initiatives (and two more states through legislation) and a recent Gallup poll shows that 74 percent of Americans are on that side of the issue.
To combat this outbreak of common sense, the drug warriors have fought back with antidemocratic and repressive methods. In the mid-1990s, the Cato Institute had its tax-exempt status threatened by a New York Republican congressman incensed over the think tank's sponsorship of a program on the failed drug war.A few years later, former Republican congressman from Georgia, Bob Barr, successfully pushed an amendment to prevent Washington, D.C., from counting the votes on its medical marijuana initiative. The American Civil Liberties Union overturned the bar in federal court; and when the votes were finally tallied, the initiative passed with 69 percent approval.Barry McCaffrey, as drug czar under President Clinton, had to be sued after he threatened doctors in California with the revocation of their prescription-writing privileges if they recommended marijuana to patients. The Bush administration continued the policy. But it was set aside by a federal appellate court that said the threats violated the free speech rights of doctors and patients.Snipped: Complete Article: http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/phonywar.htmSource: St. Petersburg Times (FL)Author: Robyn Blumner, Times Perspective ColumnistPublished: February 22, 2004Copyright: 2004 St. Petersburg TimesContact: letters sptimes.comWebsite: http://www.sptimes.com/Related Articles & Web Sites:Cato: http://www.cato.org/ACLU: http://www.aclu.org/DPA: http://www.drugpolicy.org/Suit Targets Ban on Pro-Pot Adshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread18362.shtmlFeds Face Lawsuit in Censorship Fight http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread18359.shtmlACLU Sues Metrorail, City Over Marijuana Ads http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread18356.shtml

I need to correct something I said. I said I liked Clinton. That's not true. I like him now after almost 4 years of Bush. That's what I meant. Clinton left us down and I won't forget it. There I feel better.

I saw some of Bill Maher on Hard Ball and he was good. I also saw Chris Matthews interview Ralph Nader and now some of the questions I had have been answered. He doesn't have a family but I already knew he didn't own a car. I don't know based on the interview how he would do. He might be too old. I don't like saying that but he appeared very old to me.

I don't have any of those goodies handy so I took some Alka Seltzer. Oh that stuff is yucky but it helps. It's been a long time since I've been away from the news and the date we'll be seeing Neil Young is approaching. I'm so looking forward to those couple of hours of just fun. I keep relatively current on my Neil Young pages I made. Why do I make pages about Greendale I wonder sometimes. I guess because I really liked the play. Here are a few reviews from this year.

Yep! Hillary is in the equation!
Too bad, I used to love Hillary, but she's gone lame, as horses eventually do, don't they FOM? LOL!If Kerry is the candidate, Hillary needs to be V.P. to position her for a win in 2008. Let's have the first woman to be Prez someone with less baggage. She was impressive, til she voted for the war, and bought into the 911 myth, and now seems to be Reptilian, ala David Icke. What else could explain the sudden loss of integrity that every Pol experiences upon entering office. Remember Nancy Pelosi? The Stepford Wifes syndrome abounds in Washington. If you've never seen this movie, I recommend it, it seems tame by todays' standards, but its implications are far reaching!

The more Ralph frustrates the Dems, the better!
Why does anyone hate Ralph more than bush? What not to like about Sir Ralph? Where is the outrage at Arnold wanting to run, and change the laws so he can be president. The media treats him like royalty, and hes a royal Ass.Warning will Smith, bush drops out, Arnold and Jebby run?Or the Guiliani card? The media will give Arnold a pass, even though he's accused of doing things, HE REALLY DID! But no matter, he's been crowned by the corporations! This issue is exposing the true weakness of the Dems, if Ralph isn't a threat, why are they falling all over themselves in a mass freak out? Not because he has a chance in hell to win, but because he will affect the agenda, and they can't have that, the corporate masters will see to it! They know, you know, I know Ralph won't 'win' the election, but he can shape the debate, and isn't that what we all want? If not, we've failed at educating some of the more sophisticated posters and readers at C-news.Ralph has a right to run, and the Dems say he doesn't? They also want Dennis kucinich and Al Sharpton to drop out of the debates. Why? They influence the debate. The Democratic Party is being exposed, and it is a good thing, as Kerry is smart enough not to bash Ralph. He will win even if the Dems don't shoot themselves in the foot on this one, and they will. Watch. But Kerry won't take the bait, as Howard Dean just did, and it makes Dean look stupid. The conservative pundits are laughing, and wondering aloud, 'why are they so scared, is it because we've re-written history to say that Ralph lost Gores Election, (folks, he won, and the DLC didn't think it was 'prudent' to fight, and we want to reward these guys, not me!).I'm for cleaning house altogether, and when people hate Nader more than bush, the media has done a its' job, It's called 'framing' the debate, and most have bought into it hook, line and sinker. Right Kaptinemo? And the media has called forth its 'minions' to demonize Ralph, (who has NO ego, folks, look at his career and lifestyle choices, he doesn't even drive a car, the most ego-less expression of ones self in America if there ever was one)Doesn't anyone get it? Ralph is calling for impeachment, and the Dems say: NO WAY!

I want truth not spin. We need to attack them on their views that can effect us as a society. That's what matters to me. A comment about Nader. This is my personal feeling about him and not his views. I don't like men like him. They just irritate me so as far as his politics I can't get past just not liking him. epiphany
Nuevo Mexican: - The ship needs to sink, not be kept afloat, we are a Roman-like Empire, doomed to extinction, unless we have an epiphany, and do a complete 180 degree turn. -This is exactly right, and one reason I still have hope is that I swear I can feel this coming, like a modern age rennaissance---a reawakening of American integrity. It has to happen, or as said above, we are doomed. If we can do it, we would *truly* lead the way for other nations to follow our example, where right now most other nations look at our example with shock and disgust.

Rumors still unconfirmed, but make of it what you
will: reality is always stranger than fiction, this story will have an impact, whether true or not, as it highlights the fact that Repugs can indulge in homosexual behavior, knowing there will likely be no repercussions, as the elite can smoke pot with impunity, (you don't see Art Garfunkel serving time for a joint, just Tommy Chong). Here's the link on Gov. Rick Perry:Where's Matt Drudge?

http://www.burntorangereport.com/archives/001099.htmlMake plans to march bush out of office, join millions in NYC!Though the Police Department and many protest organizers have been reluctant to predict how many people will ultimately turn out for protests, estimates have ranged from 500,000 people to a million. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0223-02.htmWatch Amys' interview with Ralph Nader, He will be a force in the election, bush is toast, don't buy into the Republi-crats fears. Kerry can will easily, especially if he takes positions similiar to Dennis and Ralphs. If not, he deserves to lose. The ship needs to sink, not be kept afloat, we are a Roman-like Empire, doomed to extinction, unless we have an epiphany, and do a complete 180 degree turn. If kerry is as smart as he appears to be, he will adopt a more anti-corporate, anti-war, pro-cannabis, pro-human/gay rights platform. If not, bush is doing a great job at dismantling the Neo-Con agenda, it's called implosion, or according to GCW, self-condemnation. The media will enable bush to steal the election, blame it on Ralph, not the Democratic Party leadership (DLC), who only want a 'duopoly' to run this country into the ground. Looks like the end of both parties to me, a real crash and burn! Bring it on!I, for one, don't buy the corporate/democratic line that Ralph is a spoiler. If you listen to Ralph, he makes total and complete sense. I look forward to more discourse on this subject! The Dems are spoilers to the campaign of Dennis Kucinich! Geez!If Dennis got this much publicity, he'd be tied with Kerry.Bush has already lost the election, yes, he will steal another one, and should, as we will arrest him this time, and take advantage of the death penalty for the last time, before it is declared illegal. Nader and talking about impeaching Bush
I would like to chime in about Ralph Nader. I saw him on tv last night giving an interview to Tim Russert and was clapping out loud in my living room. He is saying what needs to be said, even more forcefully than the dems are capable of, including having the balls to talk about impeachment. That was great. I have been waiting and waiting for someone besides votetoimpeach.org to talk about it. Someone in "TV land", where political reality lives. I mean the absurdity and hypocrisy of the republicans having tried to impeach Clinton for Monicagate while expecting to avoid having Bush impeached for his ACTUAL crimes is beyond mid-blowing to me. They *have* to know it's coming; it's a karmic thing, like a natural law of physics. Payback. But this time the offenses involved are worthy of the proceedings, concerning not some trivial sexual thing but gravely serious matters of war: the sending of our kids, our most precious resources, into battle to be attacked in a totally unnecessary war pursued blatantly for revenge and avarice. That has also led to thousands of unnecessary civilian deaths, creating a heavy karmic debt for America, when we didn't want it to begin with. Bush and his cabinet have misappropriated and misused the power and weaponry and resources of the US military. That's bigger than any felony in my opinion... it's in its own class. But whether you want to call it a high crimes, misdemeanors, or the misdeeds of a pack of evildoers, they need to be held accountable for it. Until that day, America can't redeem herself. Our system is corrupt, festering with the cancer that is corporate control, and that cancer greedily feeds on the host organism, damaging it more and more in an attempt to control and assimilate the whole host. The path is clear: cut the cancer out, or die.

Naders' impact will be positive, re: impeachment!
As you've noticed, the Dems can't use the 'I' word yet (impeachment), so it is up to Sir Ralph to do the 'dirty' work.He is a benefit to our cause, as Kerry will be elected barring the likely scenario of Martial Law, don't mis-underestimate Dubya, he won't let go of the office he wasn't elected to, until he thinks its been made official, even if it takes a declaration of Martial Law. Ralph will bring the left (progressive is a better word, as there really is only progressive and regresssive politics, left and right are divisive terms intended to do one thing only, divide, and conquer). The more the Dems scream about Ralph, the more they are discredited, so they only shoot themselves in the foot, Ralph or no Ralph.Another voice like Dennis the Ks' is needed, and will bring much needed attention to our causes. Don't be fooled by the DLC, they are so out of touch I can't believe it, but we do live under a 'duopoly', which doesn't serve us, we serve it!Go Ralph Go! The Repugs think it will hurt the Dems, WRONG!
They have the Dems scared as a Third Rail hurts the cause of the 'old boys network' and helps messengers like Dennis, whom they can't stand. Don't worry about the Martial Law thing, bush is inept, as are his minions, (look at the mess in Iraq) and would only spark a Revolution if they steal another election, which I personally hope they do, so that by Jan. 20th, Inaguaration Day, we get to see bush, cheney, rove, ashcroft and walters handcuffed, leg-ironed, and marched frog-style to the police vans. This somewhat happened to Enron this week, next Ken Lay, then the expose of Gov. Perrys' homosexual affair with the male Secretary of State to make bush campaign handlers go ballistic. Duck and cover!Low ratings for bush + scandals brewing, and about to boil, = supposed 'terrorist' act funded by the bushies, with the media waiting in the shadows for their cues.Let's start a new game, like the controversial one the Pentagon started, where you place bets on the chances of the next act of terrorism. Maybe we can call their bluff by exposing them in advance! These guys only operate successfully in the dark, so let's shine a light on their 'evil' agenda. bushes that is.

Off topic (sort of): Finally visual proof
That the US government knows of and condones the use of medicinal cannabis:Posted by w97 at:http://forum.johnkerry.com//index.php?showtopic=525&st=840As founder of the world's largest online library of drug policy, including the full text of nearly all the major studies in the last 100 years, plus thousands of original historical documents, let me assure you that your statement is very naive. I could give you a number of clear examples. Medical marijuana is one. The medicinal properties have been known for thousands of years. A prescription drug (Marinol) is made from the primary active ingredient. (The hurry-up approval of that drug is a story in regulatory bias, itself.) There are any number of other compounds in marijuana that have been shown to have medicinal potential for a wide range of illnesses. It is OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED as a medicine by the governments of Canada and the Netherlands. Even the US Government distributes medical marijuana to a number of patients. (No that is a not a typo.) The same Federal Government that employs John Kerry and claims that it is not a medicine sends a big tin can full of joints to a number of sick people every month. The reason they do that is because some patients went to Federal Court and proved to a legal certainty that 1) it is a "medicine" in terms of the law and 2) it is the only medicine suitable for their needs. One of the cans they received is being offered for sale on ebay athttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=15911

I don't share your pessimism about the election for a few reasons:1.
Al Gore never gave reformers any cause for hope, he completely abandoned an important constituency and we deprived him of our support because of it. In spite of his winning a majority of the popular vote he needed us in key states so HE LOST THE ELECTION not Ralph Nader. If we buy into the claim that Nader put Bush into the White House we deny our own influence in the race - how does that help us?I also think we've advanced our cause with the people much more under the extreme predilections of the Bush/Ashcroft/ Walters regime than we ever did under Clinton or would have under Gore.2.
John Kerry, while he's not the Ideal candidate for many reformers, he can't be acused of being against us on all of our many issues. He, unlike Gore, has the good sense, or perhaps good advice, that tells him that we are important to his future.
Reformers will see that electing Kerry will significantly advance our efforts and keep up our positive momentum. We, of course, will continue to be responsible for holding Kerry accountable for his policies should he be elected.3.
Nader will not find as much support this time around.
Last election he was the clear leftist alternative to the two major party candidates Gore (Bad) and Bush (Worse.)This time there's Kerry who's actually pretty good, particularly compared to Bush, many people will see him as as a respite from the NeoCons who have shown a mile-wide reckless streak when it comes to the constitution and the use of military power.Don't ENABLE* the centerist Democrats by purchasing their arguement that Nader caused them to lose. Better they should come to realize the truth - They need the left and other reform minded people and they ignore us at their own peril.* Enable - I use this term in the sense that it is used by Psychologists. An Enabler gives a dysfunctional person an excuse to continue his dysfunctional behavior by not confronting him and insisting that he seek help. Some of our learned members can elaborate.

I get really worried when I think of Bush being president for 4 more years. I almost have an anxiety attack! Not really but it upsets me. I want to be around when we see the laws changed. I know if Bush doesn't go it could make it take way too many years until change would come to our Cannabis Laws. I've heard younger people in the past say why didn't we do something about the laws way back in the 70s. We didn't have the Internet back then but even now with the Internet we could lose and I do hope the younger folks understand.

FOM, I certainly understand your concern, but Nader will not have much of an impact on this election. Speaking for myself, I voted for Nader last election, it is impossible for me to see how anyone who supports Nader or any other liberal 3rd party candidate will do anything that would keep Bush in office. A Question
Now that Nader will probably throw the election to Bush how will we fight for our cause? It's going to take me a few days until I can accept that Bush will be with us for 4 more years but the chances are that he might win. I know we can still move forward with Bush for 4 more years but it will be very hard on us. I guess it will be judges saying no that they won't prosecute or Bills that will be introduced will be the only way.

How much of the light has Bob Barr seen?
He pushed that medical marijuana ban. But he also stopped Dianne Feinstein and Orrin Hatch from making this website a federal crime with one year imprisonment. And now he's complaining about the Goose Creek raid and the militarized police. He sees part of the light but not all of it I guess.Maybe eventually he'll see it all.
