Lt. Gov. Loren Leman says he is standing by his decision to place the marijuana legalization initiative on the November general election ballot instead of the August primary. The initiative would decriminalize marijuana use for people 21 and older. Initiative sponsors last week filed a lawsuit seeking to have the matter decided by voters in the primary Aug. 4. Plaintiffs Tim Hinterberger, Alvin Anders, Scott Dunnachie and Linda Ronan asked for a declaratory judgment.
Initiative sponsors previously won a court victory forcing the lieutenant governor to validate their petition. He initially rejected the petition on the grounds that 194 of the 484 petition booklets had not been filled out properly. Anchorage Superior Court Judge John Suddock described them as "trivial rule violations" and ordered that all valid signatures be counted. Leman issued a letter Nov. 26 certifying that there were sufficient signatures to place the initiative on the ballot, and on Jan. 6 scheduled it to be placed on the Nov. 2 general election ballot. Leman told the Sitka Sentinel the matter properly should be decided in November. "The law says, it has to be placed on the first election more than 120 days after the end of the last legislative session that occurred after the initiative is filed," Leman said Thursday. "I take that to mean 'properly filed.' I determined the original submittal was not properly filed. "However, a judge directed me to count the books we rejected for inconsistency," Leman said. "The judge changed the rules and made the books eligible for counting. That was according to the judge's rules, not according to statutes or regulations." Leman said he was mystified by the sponsors' objection to having the vote in November, since historically the state general election has much higher participation than the primary. Leman was in Sitka to attend a meeting of the Denali Commission, which he co-chairs. P.S.
Washington, NC is the birth place of Cecil B. deMille and I believe it is a county seat. The reason I P.S.ed though is because Washington, South Carolina is just north of Goose Creek.

$4.20 for Dennis
It seems like someone would have put the $4.20 concept up at DK's forum. This is what I just put up at http://us.denniskucinich.us/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=12936#12936DK has a lot of support in the cannabis community and many other people that know the failure of the drug wars must end. DK gets coverage on pot-tv when Loretta Nall who heads the US Marijuana party does the reporting. He is the first presidential candidate to be so user friendly so to speak. One of the expressions unique to the cannabis culture centers around the expression, 4:20. When Dean was asking for $3 and the DK positions on cannabis and the WOD came out, I suggested people donate "$4.20 to Dennis."
He would have taken in a lot of money had he set the minimum donation taken over the Internet to $4.20 instead of $5. The cannabis community is glad to see the first conversion in a presidential candidate in regards to cannabis policy. It would be a bragging point to say that I donated "$4.20 to Dennis." People would brag how many times they donated. Not only that, it would make a good slogan for bumper stickers and pins and raise all kinds of money and recognition. I also suggest that he organize a "March on Washingtons" campaign. I know that North Carolina has a small town named Washington. There is no telling how many Washingtons there are across the country, but there have to be a lot of them. DK is different in he really is for the little guy and a more perfect union. He should call for marches to take our country back. If the people cannot go to Washington, then bring Washington to them. If DK would march in Washington, NC I would march with him and I would want a "$4.20 for Dennis" bumper sticker and button. The country is in peril and DK has a path to victory. He needs to welcome the support of the cannabis community and send the signal with lowering the minimum donation to $4.20 over the Internet. He also needs to remind the country that Democrats outnumber the Republicans 3 to 2 and that given a real difference in corporate representation, he will give Bush a mandate he never dreamed of.
