An Oakland man who went to state court this week to mount a medical defense to marijuana charges was instead handed over to federal authorities, who have filed charges that could put him and a co-defendant behind bars for the rest of their lives. David Davidson, 52, an Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative member, and Cynthia Blake, 53, of Red Bluff, are to be arraigned today by U.S. Magistrate Judge Gregory G. Hollows of Sacramento.
They're charged with manufacturing more than 100 marijuana plants and conspiracy to cultivate more than 1,000 marijuana plants. The former is punishable by five to 40 years in federal prison; the latter by a mandatory minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life. William Dolphin, spokes-man for Berkeley-based Americans for Safe Access, said Davidson and Blake are a couple, and he was at her home when police raided it July 29, seizing a few dozen marijuana plants. Information gained in that raid provided police probable cause for a warrant to search Davidson's Oakland home, where more marijuana was found. Davidson and Blake both have doctor's recommendations to use marijuana as medicine, as required by state law, and Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative medical director Dr. Michael Alcalay went to Tehama County Superior Court in Corning on Tuesday to testify on Davidson's behalf. But Tehama County assistant District Attorney Lynn Strom unexpectedly announced the state would drop its charges against the pair, and she and the pair's lawyers went into a judge's chambers to discuss why. When they did, Tehama County Sheriff's deputies -- acting on federal authority under a local-federal drug task force's auspices -- arrested the pair on the federal charges, issued last week by a grand jury in Sacramento. Americans for Safe Access is urging activists to stage demonstrations at noon today outside federal office buildings to protest the arrests, which ASA Executive Director Steph Sherer called "utterly outrageous." Sherer cited a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling last month that found federal officials should be temporarily barred from treating California medical marijuana patients as criminals. "And now they are tricking defense attorneys to separate them from their clients. How many rights have to be trampled before we fix this?"Source: Oakland Tribune (CA)Author: Josh Richman, Staff WriterPublished: Friday, January 16, 2004 Copyright: 2004 MediaNews Group, Inc. Please work on your NORML project. That is important. We are doing fine here. I worried about our name on a t-shirt. It's like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Maybe little pins would be better. I don't know.

Breeze about Coca-Cola
The Coca story is a very interesting one, and the coca erythoxylum is a plant that has been demonized in very much the same way cannabis and papaver somniferum have, for corporate profits of course. The coca plant has been used for thousands of years by andean natives, and the form that we know it in cocaine hydrochloride is relatively new. The indigninous people chew it as a mild stimulant and it helps with the hypoxia of living at such high altitudes. It is nothing like snorting cocaine. It takes 2 killos of coca leaves to make a gram or so of coke. In the late 1800s cocaine was usually taken in wine, and a certain brand Vin Mariana was even endorsed by the Pope! When the temperance movement was getting strong some guy came up with coca cola which kept the cocaine but traded the alcohol for sugar syrup (a very bad switch IMHO).When they decided to ban cocaine Coca cola got a loophole put in the law that they can still to this day import decocanized leaf (basically like decaffeinated coffee) You can read all about this off some link from www.hedweb.com I don't feel like finding the more precise link right now.

Oprah could be President!
I think everyone should write the Oprah Show and ask her to do a fair segment on the Medical Marijuana issue. Montel is great; but, everyone listens to Oprah. Her audience and show are highly respected by "mainstream" America; and, I've seen many instances.....which Oprah didn't simply promote or say - what might be best for her ratings and her own popularity.

t-shirts
Well- I thought of doing a coca-cola logo for cannabis news- but then re-thought the idea when I realized the connection that would go in hand with a drug I do not approve of, cocaine. Interesting note on this one though, I have heard that this is still being used in some manufaturing of some sodas- I can believe it, as most of the world is addicted to soft drinks.Anyway- I am currently working on another project that is basically in support of my local NORML chapter, and since the script/font is basically universal, no real need to work on the font here, so i am able to focus on this as fonts are not my specialty.BUT!!!
For those of you that are interested, there are a few free font creators that are easy to find on the web, some more complicated than others, but just the same if you wanna try making your own t-shirt using iron on transfer, pick out a good news font, and print it on a white t-shirt.
Art is art, so there is basically no boundaries as to using your own ideas and creativity. look for art that revolves around cannabis, get some ideas, and be creative!
Just realize the goal is to get the news out about CANNABISNEWS.COM-
There are other ways to do this other than just a t-shirt. For instance , using a basic word program , increase the size of the font, change the color to green, and print some bumper stickers! I am not going to suggest you do anything illegal, but walls are great places to put stickers, espcially in bars and department stores. I would not put it on my own car- for obvious reasons, but you can buy sticky paper at virtually any place that sells computer paper. If this is too expensive, make some smaller little slips of paper with the simple words cannabisnews.com and simply tape these in places where people HAVE to look. Just dont do anything stupid like putting them on stop signs or something like that, you want to get the message across, but not in a manner that would hurt someone, or give this wonderful site a bad venue.
My local norml chapter is making buttons, and selling them at their booth at a local flea market. This might be another idea.
Speaking of which, when was the last time you saw a booth in a flea market that supported anything that is as politically charged as the subject of ending prohibition?I suppose the bottom line is that we are going to have to be as creative as possible in getting our message across- and to the masses. With the apparent end of free speech, its now up to us to get the message out. I am actually surprised that no one has hopped on the band wagon and said out loud "Well, if they won't let us BUY bill boards, we will just get the message out ANOTHER way and do it for free!!"
Now is the time for us to get that "in your face " attitude. We can't rely on a few to speak for the masses when the few resolve themselves to just letting the issue of free speech go its weary way.
We are Americans, and We the people (me and you) are responsible for taking our rights BACK from what our oppressors deem "illegal" simply because they dont approve of our views. There was a movie called 12 monkeys, that demonstrated the importance of graffiti and free speech. There was a time when America was free, there was a time when a person could be heard and taken serious. But that time is past...

Thanks EJ
If you or someone comes up with how to do it and then how to get them out to folks that would be great. I never was good at things like that. I could probably come up with money to buy the t-shirts. I just don't know about how much or how to do this.

There's an easy way to do T shirts
Iron on transfers. They can be printed in any ink jet printer. They work great. I know how to make them. The transfer sheets are available from Avery, the people who make labels. They are available separately for dark and light colored shirts.

I don't know exactly how to answer your question but our highest total hits for one month was over 3,200,000 hits. I don't know if anyone is working on t-shirts. I left that up to those who want to do something like that. I have no talent and no board to decide anything like that. It's hard when you do something alone and with no money to do anything.

Feelin' Better Now
I went to see Gen. Clark's wife at the local VFW today and found she couldn't make it as she was grounded in Amarillo, TX by the weather. We had a state senator there, the local Democratic Chairman, and a bunch of older folks, the men mostly veterans. After a couple of people were invited to speak the offer was made again and I took it. I had a microphone and time enough to describe the atrocity perpetrated yesterday, a bit about the WAMM raid, told them what DK says and said that I believe that the Democratic Party should claim DK's positions on the Drug War and Cannabis Decrim. Told them about MPP report card ... If any noted my earlier post, I am here to say that if you have a way to forcefully speak about what we read herein every day it is indeed a catharsis. I have been coming down from THAT high most of the evening. Too bad we can't immediately run out and lecture politicians every time we need to, but we should go every chance we get. I would not want to miss him speak on the business of the news. Helen Thomas will also be on and I am excited about that to. This show should be up Monday for viewing on the Internet at PBS.org.

Your are wise to be thinking in these terms. Unfortunately, you cannot increase endocannabinoid levels merely by increasing intake of arachidonic acid, the metabolic precursor of anandamide.I have an article that will be published soon in Neuroendocrinology Letters outlining my theory of Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency as an explanation for a variety of hard-to-treat conditions that cannabis ameliorates. I will try to make a PDF available when published.

Anger
I just wanted to comment on anger. I understand why we can get upset. More then anger it seems to be frustration. Frustration can drive us crazy. Blowing off steam is good and then seeing why we are upset helps us to learn how to channel our frustration. I believe in righteous indignation. I pray that we find peace in the war against this wonderful medicinal plant soon. It's good medicine and you all are good folks too.

On Montel
Even if Montel was once a rabid prohibitionist Which I seriously doubt - He just came out on national TV AND in print and told the TRUTH!NOT to the Choir that hangs out on these pages but to the Millions of soccer moms that watch his show!!! THOSE are the people that NEED to hear the message! Thank you Montel! So today I come in here and Montel is getting savaged for having, in the past, not supported our position?!?I guess I'm not a very good activist, I'm sure there was a time when I just went with the flow and kept my mouth shut. I should be castigated because I just haven't done enough to end Pot prohibition. I used to just get stoned and never think of those sitting in jail for the same thing I was doing! If only I was worthy of being among the high and mighty crusaders who have never wavered in this war.Damn! It's a wonder we make any progress!

His ignorance has been lifted
Montel has been forced by circumstance to embark upon the learning journey that is cannabis. He once was blind but now he can see. He's going to see a lot more as he goes along, and no doubt he will feel growing remorse as time goes on over his past accusations against the herb. Many patients have been in that boat and many more will find themselves there before the war is over.

About Montel
I understand everyones feelings about Montel. I haven't been a viewer of shows like Montels so I don't know what issues he really talks about. What I do know is he made a powerful comment on how Cannabis helps him and it took courage. I think as time goes by he will be told to shut up and that might make him angry like it did Jesse Ventura. Time will take him in a new direction if the Network that supports him allows him to go on about medical marijuana. That's the big if for me. Will they allow him to speak?

Montel did great
He only took his first step and we can see he is going to go in the right direction. There is great value in calling for a Schedule 2 classification for the plant. It raises the whole issue of cannabinoids that are also Schedule 1 Narcotics. It raises the issue of man-made THC qualifying for a Schedule 3, while a natural extract is strictly forbidden with its welding to Schedule 1. It gives the intellectuals a chance to say that it should even be lower than a Schedule 2 and present that case. It raises the issue of an unyielding bureaucracy that can thinks it can legislate out any hempfood that has one molecule of THC in violations of Congressional protections, while executing drug laws on a schedule it controls without even having to adhere to its own guidelines. It gives rise to the challenges of NORML since the beginning of the Schedule of Narcotics and the CSA that gave us the famous quote of Francis Young and his ruling and how it was ignored.Montel has a cannon and he fired it with a book and on his show and at least one interview and will fire it again. It is up to us to take advantage of these firings of a cannon and advance the ways of the DEA and to talk of the stonewall and defend the proper classification of cannabis on the Schedule of Narcotics. We are lucky to have an expert speaking on the classification of cannabis in the next few weeks. That would be Dr. Russo at a Marc Emery convention in Canada. I have not seen the last few pot-tv shows to glean information on the event or its billing, but one would think that a speech on the classification of cannabis would have to nail it somewhere. The classification of cannabis is wrong on any intellectual basis conceivable. It shows the true hatred of cannabis by the government that would rather have mass murder than give up the center pole to their drug war circus. It shows that everything they ever said about a Schedule 1 justification was a lie and that every person convicted under federal law for MLG was bogus. The state laws are heavily influenced by the federal government. It is like the state is in a car going down the highway and here comes a big federal cement truck from road to the left gaining speed to go up a hill to the right. So if the federal truck knocks the state car into ongoing traffic, is the state car guilty of murder.Obviously if the proper classification applied all research would have advanced and all states would have immediately allowed for its use in medicine. So even the state laws are there because of the federal intrusion and maliciousness and people convicted under those laws are bogus as they are not intellectually derived by enforced under a federal shadow.

State of Union speech is on Tuesday
January 20th Bush will read to the best of his ability the speech written for him before Congress- http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2004-01-16-bush-stateofunion_x.htmI am expecting a stronger link to terrorism and drugs to be in that speech. The DEA has authorized a study of 1000 educated Americans that have posters of Bu$h on their refrigerator in order to lose weight. Half the people will be medicated with miracle plant before the speech and the other half will have to suffer. There will be a variety of exams offered by doctors interested in the effects of nausea, convulsions, anger management, trauma, blood pressure, and other observable affects. Also the end of the month should bring the ratings out on how well the countries of the world are to be praised on fighting the drug war. In last years speech he said Haita had "failed demonstrably" in living up to its international agreements- http://www.cannabis.net/bushwisdom.html Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and when their fearless leader went to the Summit of the Americas, it gave rise to protest that could be signs of big revolts ahead. One source I just read says it is about to explode.MoveOn.org has made a $300,000 deal with MSNBC to show a 60-second version of the winning ad that centers around last years State of the Union speech. They should be starting anytime now and run maybe up until the Super Bowl.

Montel is doing Montel's job, BGreen
Montel has a lot of jobs. His jobs include being sick, raising children, managing a business -- a TV show -- with a staff who rely upon him for their jobs. He has not become the hope of the entire movement just because he is a celebrity. There's not going to be one celebrity who saves us all from doom. There's more work in this quest than one person can handle.Montel knows how to deliver a message on TV. He keeps it short and to the point. He says, Marijuana works. He says, Schedule I IS WRONG. He wants Americans to listen to those two things. He's keeping to his main message.Cannabis deserves to be rescheduled on purely factual grounds, independently of the suffering of the arrestees.I think we know what we're doing and he knows what he's doing. Let's all do our jobs and work together and not put expectations on any one person that this person will be the Messiah to save us all.

I am listening to music and have the TV muted. I look over at the tv screen now and then and Michael Jackson is still on! Where is news about Montel Williams? This is only sensational about Jackson and it has no purpose in anything but to make people think he's guilty or innocent and most people don't care one way or the other in my opinion. Will news channels soon be replaced with soap operas because that's what they seem like to me now.
