CRRH is proud to present a video we made on June 27, 1999, when the BBC came from the UK to cover CRRH's Cannabis Tax Act petition drive in Oregon.
Not only did the BBC visit, their reporter actually petitioned and gathered signatures for our initiative while producing this documentary for British television. The total time on the web encoded video is 24 minutes. The video is viewable using the free Real Player and automatically optimize for your bandwidth connection at 28K, 56K and 112K, and can be viewed at: http://www.crrh.org/hemptv/misc_bbc699.htmlTwo months ago, a producer from the BBC visited CRRH as we began our new petition drive in Oregon. She was on a scouting expedition for the British documentary. She returned on June 27, 1999 with a BBC film crew. Jonathan Freedland, author of the book "Bring Home the Revolution" was chosen by the BBC to host a two-part documentary based upon his book. "Bring Home the Revolution" describes democracy in America to the British public and outlines 10 ways to implement more democratic institutions the UK. We are proud that the BBC has chosen CRRH's Cannabis Tax Act as an example of the initiative process for Great Britain's television audience. We are also happy to be associated with Jonathan Freedland's work. The first part of the web encoded video is my interview of Mr. Freedland. We interviewed him after the BBC camera crew had finished their videotaping. Mr. Freedland describes his projects and ideas, how the BBC chose him to produce this television documentary and how they chose CRRH's state initiative drive. Our goal, in videotaping them videotaping us, was to be as unobtrusive as possible. They flew a long way and their production reaches a much wider audience than does our production for this web site and our weekly cable access TV show, Cannabis Common Sense. Since our camera stayed in the background, the sound quality of this portion of the video is poor. We also let them produce their show. They asked me to train Jonathan Freedland on how to petition for the Cannabis Tax Act. I didn't meet Mr. Freedland until he came to our booth at the Portland Saturday Market. I told him what he needed to know to gather valid, registered voters' signatures on our petition. Freedland met Dr. Phillip Leveque. Leveque is a co-sponsor of the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act and a retired professor of pharmacology and toxicology. Then Mr. Freedland went with his film crew and petitioned for 30 minutes or so, though we didn't videotape all of Mr. Freedland's petitioning effort. Finally he came back to our booth and turned in the 8 signatures that he had gathered, signed the circulator's verification on each petition and asked more questions about the process and CRRH's work. The BBC documentary, "Bring Home the Revolution," will air in Britain next Winter. CRRH not only hosts the largest archive of streaming videos on cannabis & drug policy on the Internet, CRRH is also leading the effort to end cannabis prohibition. CRRH is promoting legislation, the Cannabis Tax Act, to be implemented via the initiative process. The CTA initiative will comprehensively reform cannabis laws in the states it passes in and fundamentally change the dynamics of drug control policy everywhere. The Oregon Cannabis Tax Act initiative was approved to begin gathering signatures in April 1999 and we are off to a good start. We have 8, 396 signatures in our Portland office as of June 23rd. We need 66,748 registered Oregon voters' signatures by July 7, 2000 to qualify the OCTA for a vote on November 7, 2000. However, we need your help. We need more donations right away to sustain our petition drive. Please send a donation to our P.O. box listed below, call us at 503-235-4606 or contact our secure, encrypted web site to make a credit card donation:http://www.crrh.org/donate/secure.html Please donate to CRRH. Tell someone who can help to donate to CRRH. Please help us keep up the momentum we have going here. Thank you.Yours truly,D. Paul Stanford
