Marijuana Joins List of Banned Drugs in Sport

As of the new year, world anti-doping regulations added marijuana to the list of banned substances. It will start testing for it at competitions where anti-doping testing is already done.Canadian Olympic diver Philippe Comtois says he supports a ban on marijuana -- and any other kind of drug. Comtois says he's seen other athletes use pot and doesn't like the effects.
"I've seen divers smoke pot a day before, two days before, and they were really hot on that day. Maybe it was the pot, maybe not, you never know," Comtois says. It's not clear if marijuana enhances athletic performance. Some say it can calm an athlete down. Others say it actually impairs co-ordination.Regardless, it's now banned in all amateur competition, at home and abroad. Any athlete testing positive for THC, the drug found in cannabis, will be disqualified and could face suspension."If you accept the premise that doping can involve health risks, doping can involve actions contrary to the spirit of sport, quite apart from the performance enhancement, then treating cannabinoids in this way is quite justified," insists Joseph de Pencier, of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. It's all part of the reaction to Canada's most infamous pot-positive athlete -- Ross Rebagliati. He created a huge buzz in 1998 when he was stripped of Olympic Gold in Nagano, Japan, after testing positive for THC. He claimed he'd only inhaled second-hand pot smoke. He eventually got his medal back. But for some aspiring athletes, adding pot to the list of banned substances now makes no sense, since it's just when Ottawa is considering decriminalizing it."They're turning around and testing everyone for it. I think they're sending different messages, mixed messages to us," says graham Schmidt of the Alberta FreeSki TeamStill, the message for serious athletes is clear -- don't touch the stuff, even between competitions, since THC can stay in the blood for weeks."If you want to go for gold you don't take any chances," says Robert Crete of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association. NBA and cannabis
Two of the greatest, longest tenured centers in the game, Kareem Abdul Jabaar and Robert Parish, were both arrested for cannabis possession on more than one occasion if I'm not mistaken. Could their knees have lasted as they did without cannabis? I think not.I know a guy who was taking 16 ibuprofin a day for months for an inflamed knee until he started using cannabis. Within two weeks he was off ibuprofin, the inflammation was gone, and it never returned.I hope the NBA never "cracks down" on cannabis. The game will suffer as the list of players on the injured list, unable to compete, grows. It will especially hurt players towards the end of their career, when the knees are torn up from years of hard use.

That's so funny. You have a much more creative air about this then I do. I am laughing as I'm writing this. I remember you saying after 9-11 that you thought people were looking at you strangely and you looked in the mirror and said oh no I look like him! I'll never forget that. It was so funny. You guys work it out and I'll keep my nose in the news! LOL!

Just a thought!
First of all, thanks for the okay.. FoM! Secondly, I like to propose an idea. Different logos appeal to different folks. For example, I like Kapt's # 12 comment on a tee-shirt, at the same time, I like many others. I remember one of the poster back here showing his logo where he view himself as a med marj user as a Jew. I love that graphic work. What I am tryin to say is why do'nt we try to build a system where different folks have the freedom of choice to choose a logo that represent CannabisNews. We can have 10 different logos or artwork to start with. CannabisNews is not about legalization. It does not take side on the issue about the cannabis itself. Althought, the comments of the posters may say otherwise but it no way does affect what CannabisNews is all about. It shows both side of the issue.I want a hemp tee shirt that says in front that I paid lousy 50 bucks for it with a back side that says Uncle Sam deemed this t-shirt deadly as Osma Bin Laden and CannabisNews.com! :)Different folks, so many tastes.. Is this what CannabisNews is all about? Anyhow, contact me and we can talk and do something.pazff

A T-Shirt I Like
This is a T-Shirt from Greendale. We could get away with wearing this shirt around our area. Very smart. http://www.greendalehigh.com/images/shirt2_sm.jpg

breeze, freedom fighter and everyone
If you can figure this out and work together and let me know when I need to help I think it would be a good thing. My mind is blank when it comes to something like this. Sometimes I think my brain only functions in news mode! LOL!

I volunteer
I am 110% for helping with the T-shirt.
I went to the location where the Kucinich meeting was to be held, but apparently I was the only one.
So much for wasting a couple of hours driving there.
Any way- I stopped at a local owned cd/tape/movie store that sees approximately 500-1000 customers a day.
They sell t-shirts as well, mostly stuff that is either gothic/metal/rock-n-roll hippie stuff.
they use the t-shirts like wallpaper, nothing on the wall that was cannabis related, but most likely because no one has come out with a t-shirt that was designed with the idea we have in mind. Keep in mind, it should be not only informative about the web site, but also sale's worthy.
Humorous- possibly, serious- posibly.
But its got to have a message other than a huge leaf.
I used to see golf shirts with a little leaf for the logo, but haven't seen these in a LONG time.

FoM, T-shirts an excellent
idea. All we have to do is hire a wholesale t-shirt company that will print out the logos. They can even do the drop-shippin of the tee-shirts to the consumers. All we need to do is write up a web page and set up an account at Pay-pal under Cannabisnews.com. Since, CNews is non-profit, we can do alot with the fund. For example, we could conduct cost analysis of every state on cost of keeping a marjiuana prisoner in a cage. Or we could contribute to DARE program. :( Speaking of DARE and other anti-drug websites, they all have something to sell, I don't see why CannbisNews can do the same. At least, I like to believe that we would put that money to a good use. That could help out. I know that you guys are busy, but maybe Breeze and I can help out with this.I know this postin seems way off-the-topic.. email me at gbodnar56 hotmail.com ff

Nuevo Mexican and Virgil
If someone wants to do this and I can leave it in others hands that would be fine with me. I love doing news and making simple web pages but that's all I know how to do. If you can work together and figure it out it will be fine with me. As far as money I could contribute some to the making of the T-Shirts.

I'll wear one, and everyone will want to buy it!
I work in a retail outlet FOM, with Cannabis Culture sold next to Micheal Moore and Deepak Chopra, so lets use T-shirts to raise money for C-News financial needs. Like forming a Cannabis Smokers Union! Then we could lobby and have major clout like AARP etc!Willies song has lyrics, but the music isn't finished, and if this is to be a hit, the 'muse' will have to come in an inspired moment, like the Christmas Day that inspired his fantastic lyrics.T-Shirts are great, since Buzzflash has become a major Website since coming to C-News 4 years ago, C-News is right behind in hits and visitors. I don't think you have any idea of C-News impact on the outside world, it is huge, and most of my friends now frequent this site. Nothing compares to C-News, regardless of whether you smoke, eat, drink or abstain from celebrating life with Gods most sacred sacrament! The creative genius that resides here daily will be taken to the next level with our T-shirts, I may have to make my own to test out which logo works best, I suggest we all do the same. Then, the one that generates the best response should be offered, as well as other variations, the message has so many ways to be stated!

I'm not good at figuring out things like this and how would we get T-Shirts made and distributed? We are just a web site on Maps site but I don't think they would be interested in helping us with this. They are real busy.

The T-shirt Slogan- more or less
I agree with FoM, these were some really cool ideas!
But so I can focus on one idea, is there some way we can take a vote or something?
And should the design say CNNEWS.com - or CANNABISNEWS.comTo put it BLUNT-ly, I think that the more ideas, the better! Information you can use, Cannabis NEWS -
AND the truth will set you free!
In fact , if I do the logo, then just about anything can be put on the back.
But man, I sure would like to have one, I think it would be cool to wear this t-shirt to the upcoming debate in my area!
I will try to work on the logo after I get back from a Kucinich meeting this afternoon.

greed and duplicity
"Through all of this greed and duplicity in professional and amateur sports, how am I supposed to believe that marijuana, of all things, is bad? "You're not. It's a multi-billion dollar scam ignored to this day by our 'Justice' department, the Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Attorneys in every state. - this comment posted in memory of Federal prosecutor Jonathan Lunahttp://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/12/05/prosecutor.killed/wage drug peace

Letter to editor

So they are now officially banning Marijuana from sports. Maybe it enhances, maybe it impairs, depending on the individual.
What I find odd, is how drugs of almost every kind (except, of course, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and prescription drugs) are being banned, yet these same sports stars make millions endorsing fast food (which causes obesity and heart disease), various oil companies (which pollute the environment), and fashionable sporting equipment (most of which is made by slave-wage children on the other side of the world). Through all of this greed and duplicity in professional and amateur sports, how am I supposed to believe that marijuana, of all things, is bad?

How about this one:
The front says, in small letters printed over the heart area, simply CNEWS. Maybe a small cannabis leaf above it.The back says, in much larger letters, "CAN YOU HANDLE THE TRUTH?" with the CNEWS URL under it.An obvious tip of the hat to the Tom Cruise/Jack Nicholson movie A FEW GOOD MEN. And it gets your attention right away.

Breeze -Enhance yourself
Now that I thought about it I wish I had a tee shirt that said Enhance yourself by itself. Then maybe CannabisNews.com by itself. How about Enhance yourself with another line being I do and I feel fine most of the timeFor the most part, I believe bowling is just a good excuse to drink beer. If glow sticks are paraphanalia for estcasy, then bowling balls would be paraphanalia under a present alcohol prohibition.

the olympics amounts to
a two-week long advertisement for drug testing.Which is why I boycott anything olympic. And "performance enhancing"? I thought we were told pot made you dumb and slow and a-motivational. But now this diver is saying that pot smokers were "really hot" the day after smoking pot. It's clear that, to the pee testing industry, pot is whatever they want it to be to justify their jobs.

Hmmm. Come up with a cool catch phrase, and i will do what I can to design a neat looking scrib.
I always thought "WHY BE NORML" on the front with "ASK ME WHY " on the back would be cool, but I was alone in the room at the time.

BOWLING-
Bowling. One of my favorite sports. Golf, another sport designed almost around the principle of being ONE with nature.I wonder what Tiger would say if they made him quit? I do believe he admitted it in a magazine I once read - but don't quote me. You GOTTA know that pro-fisherman have to. And surfers? Like, yeah dewd! And you gotta be high to hanglide, or jump out of a perfectly good airplane and land safely!
Should I go on? No- this will suffice.
I read CN three times daily- its my only source for news.
But here might be of interest to those in New York-http://www.reconsider.org/By the way- where can I get my CN NEWS t-shirt?
I love CN News- its the only sight I rely on for news every day-

This is a Little Off Topic
When I competed we didn't have any rules except a hard hat that didn't have a harness. Hard hats don't help if a person lands on their head no matter what. They made a law that a person must wear this heavy and bulky helmet. I got yelled out over the loud speakers for taking mine off for a second because my head was so hot. This big heavy helmet takes away from the natural balance that a rider needs and I never felt it was a benefit. Learning how to roll when a person is thrown is a much safer way of dealing with safety. I said that to say this. Banning this or that and requiring this or that might make the sport more dangerous but they never seem to think that way and I don't get it.

They're in a lot of pain
NBA players should be counted as medical users. They subject their bodies to a lot of pain and inflammation. Marijuana is better than those steroids they get shot up with that ruin their kidneys.

NBA
I'm a huge basketball fan. And if you are, you know well who Charles Oakley is. He's a long time vet who's been in the NBA for about 15 years. He said something like 7 out of 10 NBA players use marijuana regualarly. Just thought I'd get that out there.

They're about to ban themselves out of a market
If everyone in a certain sport is using marijuana, then what are the odds that everyone who takes time out of their life to watch that sport on television also uses marijuana? For snowboarding and other sports, it could really have an impact.
