Norml's Weekly Press Release

Kucinich Promises To End Marijuana Arrests; Establish "Guidelines Similar To Those Already In Place For Alcohol" Washington, DC: If elected, Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) would end federal criminal prohibitions on the use of marijuana for recreational purposes, and establish national guidelines to regulate it like alcohol, according to a recent position paper posted on the "Kucinich for President" website.
"Current drug policy ... regards all users as abusers, and the result has been the creation of an unnecessary class of lawbreakers," Kucinich states in his position paper, entitled "Marijuana Decriminalization." "A Kucinich administration would reject the current paradigm of 'all use is abuse' in favor of a drug policy that sets reasonable boundaries for marijuana use by establishing guidelines similar to those already in place for alcohol."Kucinich has previously spoken out strongly in favor of allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes, and recently stated that he supported decriminalizing marijuana at a November 4, 2003 Presidential debate aired live on CNN."Non-violent marijuana users comprise the bulk of the half-million Americans imprisoned for drug violations, and many frequently serve longer sentences than do those convicted of violent crimes," Kucinich states on his website. "The rationale for continuing these draconian policies is unclear. Statistical evidence shows that marijuana use follows a pattern very similar to that of alcohol. Most marijuana users do so responsibly, in a safe, recreational context. These people lead normal, productive lives pursuing careers, raising families and participating in civic life."In addition, marijuana has proven benefits in the treatment of numerous diseases, such as providing a valuable means of pain management for terminally ill patients. In either of these contexts, there is no rational justification for criminally enforced prohibitions. These unnecessary arrests and incarcerations serve only to crowd prisons, clog the judicial system, and distract law enforcement officials from violent crime. ... By ... moving away from criminally-enforced drug prohibitions, we will be moving toward safer streets and stronger communities."NORML Foundation Executive Director Allen St. Pierre said that Kucinich is the first Democratic Presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter to make the decriminalization of marijuana for personal use a campaign issue. Previously, Kucinich, Massachusetts Congressman John Kerry, and front-runner Howard Dean had each voiced varying degrees of support for the use of medicinal marijuana - though as Vermont Governor, Dean vigorously opposed passage of a 2002 proposed law that would have legalized it for qualified patients. According to the Kucinich for President website, Kucinich would issue an 'executive order allowing marijuana for medical purposes, and end the DEA raids on medical marijuana patients and their providers.' For more information, please contact either Allen St. Pierre or Paul Armentano of The NORML Foundation at (202) 483-8751.To learn more about the candidates' positions on marijuana-related issues, please visit: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=5722Dennis Kucinich's "Marijuana Decriminalization" position paper is available online at: http://kucinich.us/issues/marijuana_decrim.phpSource: NORML Foundation (DC)Published: December 4, 2003Copyright: 2003 NORML Contact: norml norml.org Website: http://www.norml.org/DL: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=5850CannabisNews NORML Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/NORML.shtml

Let's not forget the Patriot Act
(donate 4.20 was an awesome improvement over my 3.00 suggestion lol)Here's Dennis's position on the patriot act:Just 45 days after the September 11, 2001, attacks, President Bush rammed the "PATRIOT Act" through Congress with virtually no debate. This law poses an unprecedented threat to Americans' individual freedoms and is a violation of our civil liberties. Many provisions of the act had been long sought after by law enforcement and repeatedly rejected by Congress in the past.Without a warrant or probable cause, the FBI can now search your private medical records or access your library records. Your doctor or local library is forbidden from notifying you when these searches take place. The government may search your home while you are away and in some cases even confiscate your property. Judicial oversight of these measures is virtually nonexistent. These are only a few of the PATRIOT Act's provisions that compromise our civil liberties.Dennis Kucinich believes the only way to stop these unconstitutional infringements on basic American freedoms is to revoke the exorbitant powers the PATRIOT Act has granted the government. He is the only presidential candidate who voted against the PATRIOT Act. As president, one of his first moves will be to repeal it.Kucinich, along with 20 other members of Congress, has introduced the Benjamin Franklin True Patriot Act, which would repeal several major sections of the law. It would eliminate the PATRIOT Act's subjective search-and-seizure provision, unwarranted incarcerations, and the authority of federal officials to search our private records without probable cause. The act would restore the fundamental right of attorney-client privilege, revoke various Department of Justice secrecy orders, and repeal provisions harmful to the rights of immigrants. In addition, it would restore transparency to Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security administrative procedures by revoking Freedom of Information Act secrecy orders.Benjamin Franklin said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." In eroding our civil liberties, President Bush has taken our freedom while making us no safer, no better protected against terrorism. The "PATRIOT Act" is not what American patriots fought and died for. As Americans, we cannot allow fear and scare-mongering to lead us to a place where we abandon our most precious traditions.

Dennis Kucinich
I don't think that it will be easy for Dennis Kucinich to win but he is shedding light on how bad cannabis prohibition is and if he gains support for his stand it will make whoever gets the nomination to listen and realize that this is an important issue and must be addressed. Also if he gets a fair amount of support he might get to be appointed to a important position if the Democrats win. That's my hope.

Donate to Kucinich
I very seriously doubt he can win the primary. And I'm not sure he is the best candidate to beat Bush. But if he gets enough money he can change the nature of the debate, forcing medical marijuana into the discussion as well as talking about the insane drug war.It will be money well spent. -Pete

Thank you. You would need to probably talk with Ron or Matt to learn how this program works. CNews is a little bit Matt Elrod and a little bit Ron Bennett. Each one of them has added features and done nice things for us here. I am amazed that it works as well as it does. I don't take it for granted. I have my Freedom To Exhale web site which Ron lets me have and he was the one who created and then gave me CNews. Sometimes I wonder why I am so lucky. I know it has helped me learn so much and talk with nice people from all over the world. I never thought something like this could ever happen particularly when I took a typing course in high school and thought how would typing ever benefit me and a million years later it has helped! Thanks Again!

Here's An Idea
I really am not into politics like most of you are and that's best for me to be that way because of doing CNews but what about sending an email to The Soros Foundation and mention how much you appreciate Dennis Kucinich and it would be appreciated if they would help him with funds because Kucinich's message is very outspoken for marijuana reform and is making a stand more then any other person that is running. I believe a person who stands up for reforming these terrible laws will do good things in other areas of politics too. It's a trust thing for me. I know that he is an underdog but don't those who are the long shot deserve help even if it seems almost impossible for them to win or do we only endorse those who might win because we don't like to support someone who might not make it? That's my idea. Soros' Pet Projects Include Overthrowing a Government: http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread17920.shtml

We HAVE to do it NOW!!!
Keep in mind that the MEDIA is the enemy- they have already chosen their ideal front runners for the job. Dean and that other dude. Science has shown that the dude with the biggest chin usually gets the job- I know this is strange, but in the media, as in hollywood- leadership is based upon appearence, not on ability.
We have to make a stomp!
We have to scream it out loud!
We have to make it known that this man is THE ONLY leader for the job- and its not going to be easy- because WE have to get others motivated to vote for the man in the back- not the two chins out front.
The swagger/debauner- the country club looking fools are always the ones that the media pushes to the fore front. The chins win.
It is science- but WE can change science, as SCIENCE has been proven wrong before. But it is going to take a MASSIVE push. We need to write EVERY newspaper, every radio station, every television station, web site, AND IT NEEDS TO BE UNDER EVERY HEADING!!! It needs to be the buzzword on EVERYONES lips- thats the only way it can be done, every single person we can think of- I registered as a republican in the 80's (Hey, my parents told me too) - and now I am trying to change that- any ideas?

The GCW and Everyone
Yes, I can relate because when CNews isn't working I feel lost but that doesn't happen often. CNews is like my home in many ways. We had a nice time while the satellite was down. We listened to the radio! I haven't listened to a regular radio for years. We found a local station having a Everybody Must Get Stoned Weekend. This is a local station and I was surprised that they were talking about doobies and it's playing great music I haven't heard in years. Interesting what you find on the radio when the tv isn't working. I know you don't have a tv. I don't miss it so far. I like the Discovery, TLC and National Geographic channels but they will be on tomorrow when the snow melts off the dish. That one is on the chimney and I'll let the sun take care of that one tomorrow. I turn the news off as soon as I know the world didn't blow up anymore. The Internet is the greatest tool we have. It is the people's voice not just politicans voices like tv.

The Extremist Party supports Dennis Kucinich
Dennis is for instant runoffs in elections where a nominee does not have a clear majority. The Extremist Party is united by the belief that The Largest Minority Rule is the tool that keeps the power of the entire country in the hands of two corrupt and stagnant parties. It should be clear to the informed that the Extremist Party could only support Dennis Kucinich for president. The Moderate Extremist that are united in the belief that growing cannabis is a patriotic act and should have never been a crime are doubled in their support of Kucinich. It is up to us. We should learn from the plutocracy and invest in a candidate that will represent us. A $30 billion underground economy could be a $10 above ground economy and it should be. Donate $4.20 to Dennis so that we might enjoy life in freedom and tell your friends they need to vote.

Nevada was practice.
After 40% of Nevada voted for Re-legalizing cannabis, it seems We can use that example and apply it to this issue nationally. If Dennis Kucinich can get 40% of the vote, He can make the Nov. headliner. It seems the same 40% would also vote for Dennis Cannabis.I mean Dennis Kucinich.4200000000'04Dennis 4 Cannabis... I have thought We are getting to be quite a grass roots effort... We have some leverage. We should put Our unity right here on a national scale.Right now.Nation wide.Think of everyone and anyone to call and raise some interest... and raise enough so they will call someone else...Like those chain letters... only We will make a chain of phone calls that keeps growing.I'm going to get back on the phone!

His MJ platform from his web site
http://www.kucinich.net There is a link there for donating. With the enactment of the Volstead Act in 1919, America embarked on a social experiment known as Prohibition. Prohibitionists rejected the idea that people could be trusted to drink in moderation, arguing that alcohol use inevitably led to moral corruption and undesirable behavior. Accepting these premises led Congress to conclude that a federal ban on the production and sale of alcohol would go a long way toward reducing crime and addressing a variety of other social problems. Within a decade, however, Americans discovered that the criminally enforced prohibition of alcohol produced harmful side effects. The rise of black markets empowered organized crime to an unprecedented degree. In some of America's largest cities, local governments were heavily corrupted by mafia influence. The black market provided minors with easy access to bootlegged alcohol, which was frequently of poor quality and unsafe to drink. Faced with the disastrous consequences of Prohibition, Congress decided in 1933 to repeal the Volstead Act. Since that time, the government has implemented the much more successful policy of focusing law-enforcement efforts on irresponsible alcohol users who endanger the rights of others. The example of Prohibition illustrates the importance of distinguishing between drug use and drug abuse. Alcohol is a powerful depressant, the use of which leads to impaired judgment and motor skills. Taken in sufficient quantity, alcohol consumption can result in organ damage or death. Despite these very real dangers, however, most Americans are able to use alcohol safely their entire adult lives. Further, this use typically occurs without significant impact on careers, families, and communities. Armed with a clear understanding of both the benefits and potential risks of alcohol use, people overwhelmingly choose the path of responsibility and moderation.Unfortunately, current drug policy fails to take into account the lessons of Prohibition. The law regards all users as abusers, and the result has been the creation of an unnecessary class of lawbreakers. Non-violent marijuana users comprise the bulk of the half-million Americans imprisoned for drug violations, and many frequently serve longer sentences than do those convicted of violent crimes. In addition to the staggering cost of housing these prisoners, the "war on drugs" tears families apart, weakens the American workforce, and drains law enforcement of resources. The rationale for continuing these draconian policies is unclear. Statistical evidence shows that marijuana use follows a pattern very similar to that of alcohol. Most marijuana users do so responsibly, in a safe, recreational context. These people lead normal, productive lives - pursuing careers, raising families and participating in civic life. In addition, marijuana has proven benefits in the treatment of numerous diseases, such as providing a valuable means of pain management for terminally ill patients. In either of these contexts, there is no rational justification for criminally enforced prohibitions. These unnecessary arrests and incarcerations serve only to crowd prisons, clog the judicial system, and distract law enforcement officials from violent crime. Racial bias in the enforcement of drug laws is pervasive. According to a Human Rights Watch report based on FBI statistics, blacks were arrested on drug charges at nearly five times the rate of whites. Drug use is consistent across racial and socioeconomic lines -- yet in the state of New York, for example, 94 percent of incarcerated drug offenders are Latino or African-American, mostly from poor communities. The voters have spoken on this issue, over and over, in many states, choosing to legalize the medical use of marijuana. In Washington, D.C., the Congress refused to allow D.C. to even count the votes, violating both common sense (on the marijuana decriminalization question) and civil and voting rights (by denying D.C. residents their own voice).A Kucinich administration would reject the current paradigm of "all use is abuse" in favor of a drug policy that sets reasonable boundaries for marijuana use by establishing guidelines similar to those already in place for alcohol. America can no longer afford to ignore the lessons of Prohibition. By joining with our friends in Canada and European countries in moving away from criminally-enforced drug prohibitions, we will be moving towards safer streets and stronger communities.

Right now is perfect,
to send letters to newspapers (LTE's) pointing out this information.America has a true Democrat running for President. One who stands out.A man running for president, who says it is time to end the persecution and extermination of cannabis. That is a first!Let's not allow it to be the last.I am serious, write letters, send them to the editors of newspapers and get Your thoughts published. This has other residual effects; it is the type of campaign Dennis wants, as I understand He does not accept large corporate donations. That pretty much leaves the regular man to help. For those who can not help out with money,There is so much that can be done with little or no money.I recall MAP pointing out how much the LTE's are worth, on the MAP archive, in dollar value. It is a lot. Dennis doesn't have the bloody war chest, that a Bush or a Dean has... He can not have as many ads... BUT WITH LETTERS BEING PUBLISHED IN NEWSPAPERS ACCROSS NORTH AMERICA, HE AND WE GET THE WORD OUT FOR LITTLE OR NO MONEY.As an obedient Christian, I believe that other than Kucinich, I can not vote or support any other candidate. As an obedient Christian, I am unable to support the cagings, or the persecution and extermination of cannabis. As an obedient Christian, I amable to support a candidate who supports killing. Weather it be Our brothers in Iraq, Afghanastan, or Texas.Dean is a doctor; and supports killing and the caging of cannabis users. The others are also, just like the killer in office, now!As bad as Bush is, I will not vote for any evil.Kucinich is the only candidate who seems not to be evil.42000000000000Get Me started.Get Us all started.A lot of the type of citizens I think are Kucinich supporters have limited incomes. That makes it imparative to make the grass roots style yard signs; just a piece of wood with hand painted lettering, with: "KUCINICH 4 PRESIDENT IN 4"etc.These are 2 affordable ways to spontaneously, start helping the future President, Dennis Kucinich -right now.Can You imagine the impact of these grass roots style of signs, all accross America?I am in love.

The White House, filled with respectable Christians and Jews, all asking for the the ear of the most taxed human beings in the history of this planet?Power, like pride, comes before the fall..Can Dennis make it?The Bubbas and the Goobers have not a clue, they cannot hear the message or the cries of the incarcerated..The Moslem, Jewish and Christian mindset has been carefully manipulated for many centuries, and will be difficult to communicate with,..The shallow intellectuilism that surrounds us, has comfort in their full bellies and drunken lifestyles..I'm not sure if all the money on this planet, could allow Kucinich to win the presindentcy..In regards to the weed, the "pigs" would scream, and they would go into the streets with their clubs,..Our world..does it belong to us..the people..or is it some contrivince for the rich and powerful?History has revealed a series of battles for land, oil and resources, In a finite situation, the finite mindset, the most desperate, will pervail..I write from a most disheartened place, in my mind set, and world view, the "lust" for "power" has been the single most controlling influence of our world. The historcal murder of Jesus, has marked a point in time, that secretly carries the message, for 2000 years, ..power is not to be ignored, and greedy humans can be the most dis-agreeable types..If Kucinich should ever be known, ( I Love the this man), the pigs will scream, and the the hosts of darkness shall be invoked, for they will cry like pigs into the slaughter,..but remember, the pigs make a fine roast, a savory dish that pleases the sight and the senses..gw

We need to donate to him
I'm a registered republican (hey, I registered in the 80s when I was young), yet I'm going to send Dennis some money.Do you all realize the #1 thing he probably needs is money. We can do like Howard Dean did.. if everyone sends Dennis $3.00, in large numbers we can make a difference! Dean raised like 500K in a few days by soliciting $3.00 donations. Think of it as giving up your lunch money for 1 day... everyone pack a lunch tomorrow and send Dennis the money you would have spent on lunch!

Woo-Hoo
I am increasingly tired of the prohibitionist lies and backlash after a Summer of Legalization and Freedom. Ontario and other Canadian provinces have shown the world, of those willing to be informed about the issue, that cannabis smoking is not a danger to society. As I see, read, and hear the Canadian prohibitionists argue for increased incarceration with discredited mandatory minimums, my blood boils. I will not wait another 30 years for the hope of change. We must act now. With the US federal and big business drug testing, the police invasion of schools, the harassment of doctors, patients, providers, and cultivators, and the caging of non-violent cannabis tokers, I shudder. It feels like looking into the dark history of slavery. It is refreshing beyond belief to read the insightful, hopeful, and determined words of this uncommon politician, Dennis Kucinich. Long may he ride.ego transcendence follows ego destruction, the future is just around the corner, the cracks in the prohibitionist paradigm are increasingly larger day by day, united we stand, divided they fall.

Oh boy! The commercials are coming.
Pot-tv has some commercials that fill the nothingness that once existed. Now we will see virtual debates where DK can espouse The Logical Conclusion while his counterparts say "Damned the failure and freedom, full speed to debt."Where is the NYT and the WP on this huge event and where are all the incarcerationists chanting "Marijuana is a dangerous drug." If only DK will throw the truth about the role of the ONDCP and NIDA and NIH in prolonging prohibition with the primary tools of silence and lies.Where is that virtual debate Jose? The commercials at pot-tv are here- http://www.pot-tv.net/archive/shows/pottvshowse-1756.html

Misconception
I think Dennis means that it will be regulated similiar to the way alcohol is regulated. It is not meant to be a comparison to alcohol. I hope he makes the Democratic Nomination, I'll definately vote for him. Although I confess that I intend to vote for anyone who is not Bush!

Comparing Little Red Riding Hood with bad Wolf!
Hi my Friends; The idea of this politician is great, but comparing marijuana with alcohol is not a good comparison. Alcohol kills and induces violence..not pot. It should never be compared with alcohol.Peace,Marc

Thank you FOM, NORML, and DJK!!!
This is what weve been waiting for!Four years and Gov. Johnson later, we have a Presidential Candidate with Cajones, and just in time! Keep your eye on the light at the end of the tunnel, the Uni-verse will not let us down, but wants us to learn the lesson were learning, never to forget, always to forgive, and that change is the only constant. I guess George needs to play evil to Christs' goodness, the contrast should not be lost on mankind, lest we perish, due to our denial of the truth.

This is one of the top ten events of the year
We have an outspoken, unapologetic, presidential candidate claiming the best path is too treat cannabis like alcohol. Where are all the incarcerationist in jumping on this lone voice for freedom. Attack Dennis on this and you are going to get eaten alive by people that actually think and do not bleat. Here is our chance to break the silence and make the incarcerationist fools defend their wicked and unAmerican ways. Why have they not jumped on him if they are so convinced that regulation is a dangerous drug policy? Might it be that CP is indefensible in honest intellectual thought? That be it, dude.
