Transcripts: CNN Crossfire - Marijuana Ad On Metro

CNN's Crossfire Transcripts
Source: CNN

Anyway, an advertisement in the Washington, D.C. subway system has provided Oklahoma Congressman Ernest Istook, chairman of the House Transportation Subcommittee. (CROSSTALK) CARLSON: ... threaten almost $100,000 from the federal government's annual payment. The ad, posted as part of the Metro's policy providing free ad space for public service announcement, declares -- quote -- "Enjoy better sex! Legalize and tax marijuana" Well, Change the Climate, the pro-pot legalization group behind the ad, threatened to sue if it was not given the space to air its views.
Opponents of the ad claim it glorifies drug use and promotes an illegal activity, points that are pretty hard to dispute. On the other hand, most experts expect that the ads will remain exactly where they are. Truth is, after all, still a defense. BEGALA: The problem is, the message is not true. It's a dangerous public health message to be sending out. I went and looked. There was a Kaiser study in 1997 which stated the obvious. People who use pot oftentimes engage in risky sexual behavior. D.C. has an enormous AIDS problem as it is. There have been cases, many cases documented in the medical research, of men actually getting breast enhancement out of smoking pot. CARLSON: For free?(LAUGHTER) BEGALA: I don't think that's anybody's idea of a sexual turn-on. And there's a lot of cancer-causing agents in marijuana. It's a dangerous drug. (CROSSTALK) BEGALA: ... illegal.CARLSON: You're -- you're on the Republican side of this? (CROSSTALK) (BELL RINGING) BEGALA: I am.CARLSON: Good for you. BEGALA: I am. It's a dangerous message. Istook Jr. ( R-Okla. ) was incensed about poverty, injustice and other important issues facing this country instead of grinding his teeth about an ad on Metro ["Marijuana Ad on Metro Infuriates Lawmaker," Metro, Dec. 3], the country and his constituents would be better off. Further, his press secretary is wrong about Metro promoting an "illegal activity." The ad doesn't say to grow, sell, buy or use marijuana -- activities that would be illegal. The ad asks people to lobby for legalization and taxation of marijuana, both processes that continue to be legal in the United States. THOMAS L. SCHWARZ Burke

Holiday Wish
I want a series of at least 20 debates between Geoprge Soros and John Walters. Broadcast every single one on CSPAN, COURTv NPR clearChannel NBC ABC CBS and CNN. Maybe we should start a news channel where all the 'announcers' have black tape over their mouths, and only use subtitles.

WWJD
There are stickers and buttons in circulation with "What Would Jesus Do" on them. It became so common that now the stickers and buttons read "WWJD."I do not believe that anyone thinking of the good of humanity could be for a prohibition of cannabis, much less one with the hatred and harshness we see in America, the land of the unfree. Fighting MMJ/CC with the lies and herding the people's thoughts with the media is not WJWD. CC is clinical cannabis in respect to Dr. Russo. WJWD is "What Jesus Would Do." Two more original thoughts at Cnews.

My husband said they could have gotten control of the situation by shooting a net and it could have tripped him and he would have fallen but he'd still be alive. They shoot nets to capture in a humane way wild animals that need to be tagged or checked for injuries. Why is violence used when they realized he wasn't operating with a clear mind because of the drugs? I guess if a person is under the influence of drugs they aren't worth any effort to save their life?

Headline I've been waiting to see.....
If the media, (our side supposedly, Begala), lies so blantantly about Cannabis, assume everything you hear from the deadly cathode ray, is a bold, bald-faced lie.You won't see this headline in the USA, and why not, I thought we had a free press:'US cops beat a black man to death'They can then be seen in the video beating him with their sticks, with one of the officers using the end of his stick like a spear. They continue to deliver the beating while he is on the ground. Meanwhile, human right activists have said Jones' death was another example of police brutality and racism in Cincinnati. "How many of our people have to die before the city decides to do something about it?" said one. But the city's mayor, Charlie Luken, resisted demands to ask the police chief to resign saying, " What I saw was a 400 pound-man violently attacking a police officer in a manner that put the lives of police officers at risk." http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/12/02/1070127397839.htmlCall the Mayors office, 1-513-352-3250 and continue to demand resignations,

Thick Skull
That what my father always said I had a thick skull. He was right I do have a thick skull. I don't know if the ads were good or bad. This is one of those not black or white areas with me. I am glad that I have someone I trust to help me sort it out and help me to make good decisions here on CNews. I depend on my husband to tell me when I should do something if I'm not sure and he even helps me by pointing out mistakes I make and I try to fix them. As we go along issues will surface that we didn't even think about not all that long ago. We will see more issues where blurring will occur in how we think about an issue or two. In a way that is when I think with more depth so controversial issues concerning cannabis are challenging to say the least. Here comes 2004! Oh boy!

Things go better with laughing grass
I am neutral on whether the sex and pot ads were the best choice. I think it breaks the silence and might be a way to pierce some people's thick skulls. I am for the simple "Cannabis Prohibition is WRONG" and also "Cannabis Prohibition is a hoax." The problem is that many people who would like the Logical Conclusion have not developed their talking points and feel the conviction. It is a good thing I don't have money to spend before the final curtain or I would put up what I know would be draw a conversation or at least a complaint and would break the silence. You have to imagine the picture, but it would draw from the BS- How would you like to meet Jesus?People might not like it, but we are just breaking the silence. Laughing grass is not some obsure thing. At least 100 million people have tried it in America. The ad is only to make people talk and if it is offensive, it does not matter as long as it can start a conversation. Here it is 2004 minus a few days and we are still on CP. What we they say about this year in even 20 years? The important thing I wanted to say is that the 76 year-old Cass Ballinger from a district representing Hickory and surrounds in North Carolina will be retiring in January, 2005. He is one blind prohibitionist and anyone that replaces him has to be better on the cannabis issue.

Nicholas
I understand what you are saying. Maybe because I understand politics that's why I am not involved in politics. I want informed leaders that have an awareness of the drug war but how can they address the drug problems in any city without addressing why there are so many drugs in the inner cities? When a city or a town or even a country watches as poverty takes a hold of a portion of the people and they don't do anything to really help selling drugs will be about the only way practically for poor inner city folks to put some food on the table and have a roof over their head. That's just my opinion.I didn't know you aren't NORML's Communications Director anymore. I wish you much success in whatever you do!

WHERE ARE THE BODIES???
BEGALA: I don't think that's anybody's idea of a sexual turn-on. And there's a lot of cancer-causing agents in marijuana. It's a dangerous drug. So, Begala is implying that cannabis causes cancer? WHERE ARE THE BODIES??? If cannabis truly caused cancer you can bet that the ONDCP,the PDFA,DARE and every other prohibitionist organization in America would be jumping all over that one! At the risk...
....of making poor FoM's already difficult job more difficult:1)There is no grand conspiracy here: this is typical Congress vs. DC politics. The Congressional and DC politicians cited in these stories and transcripts are doing their respective jobs as they see fit: Ernie is representing what he believes to be the wishes of both his Oklahoma constituents and his national constituents (conservative, Christians mostly Republican voters who believe marijuana usage to be a threat to children as ell a "sin" for adults -- even responsible adult marijuana users). Graham is a good guy who is looking out for his DC (if not DC Metro area) constituents: it's all part of a representative republic often mistaken for a Greek Democracy.2) Embrace your allies, understand your foes: CNN's Begalia and Carlson are playing tag team here: Carlson is a credible conservative who happens to also understand that our nation's "war on drugs" is yet another bloated, failed bureaucracy and likely personally opposes irrational & antiquated marijuana laws: he would totally support decriminalization (the "leave us/them alone theory of American conservatisim) -- not taxed legalization -- if he could publically do so. Begalia is a typical Clintonista who sides with whatever furthers their/his anti-Bush/Republican/conservative, humantistic agenda and is amoral. Carlson in this case is one of our increasing numbers of conservative Republican allies, whereas Begalia is an obstructionist who favors benevolent PC dictators like Hillary & Bill Clinton telling us what is good & right, whether we like it or not. Begalia is saying SOME social messages paid for by taxpayers (who fund Metro) are good (i.e. get an abortion good, distribute government condoms are a good message, pro-pot & sex messages are bad)while worthwhile while some are not. Carlson is saying NO controversial social messages should be put forth under public domain and/or expense(DC's government has begun an expensive campaign to distribute free condoms at public buildings).3) Since I am no longer NORML's Communications Director, I feel able to say this: Climate for Change's ad campaign is stupid at best, harmful to the movement at worst. The issue here is not pot & sex but locking people up for either. A better, more appropriate message would be Stop arresting responsible marijuana smokers and wasting taxpayer dollars". Things like this put our allies (i.e. Carlson & Graham) in difficult positions.4) There ARE serious "drug" problems both in Washington and nationally: crack cocaine, Ecstasy, and PCP, overall, have an enormously negative impact on our communites -- especially so-called "black" communites (read Cortland Milloy's column in the same Metro pages of the Washington Post where this story appeared this morning and you will see his take on the problems caused by PCP and other harmful drugs:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29964-2003Dec2.html4) Last but not least: the problem here is DC's overall problem in that it continues to be treated like a plantation, not a jurisdiction with it own representation and ability to make its own decisions (I personally favor the notion of returning the Distrcit -- like what is now called Arlington County across the river in Virginia was years ago -- to it's natural political and governmental boundries: make it a Maryland county -- just as Prince Georges or Montgomery County are -- and you will pick up at least one congressional district and perhaps ensure a "black" U.S. Senator from the state of Maryland.Whew: there you go...that's my take.Good night, all.

Now pot causes aids also....
Please notice the little switch...people who use pot engage in risky sexual behavior and from there to "DC has an enormous AIDS problem as it is." Begala says, "the (ad) message is not true." But he switches immediately and gives absolutely no sources saying that marijuana does not enchance sex. The real message from all of this is: SEX IS IMPROVED WITH MARIJUANA. Not just improved, but intensified to levels only rarely experienced without it and, face it folks, to the puritans that is really bad.
