Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1977 interview with the now-defunct pornographic magazine Oui is not recommended reading for anyone without a strong stomach for vulgarity. But the interview helps explain the soundness of one of the actor's public-policy positions.Schwarzenegger smoked marijuana, enjoyed it and still managed to become an ambitious, intelligent actor and businessman who built a sterling career for himself. This must give him a healthy skepticism for the unthinking hostility toward marijuana that infects our political culture and drives the federal government's lunatic campaign against the drug, as if anyone who ever tries it is doomed to become a stoner.
The flash point in the marijuana wars at the moment is the fight over the medical use of the drug. Schwarzenegger is in favor of legalizing it, as are most Californians. The state passed a ballot initiative permitting the medical use of marijuana with 55 percent of the vote in 1996. Eight other states have legalized it as well, creating friction with the feds, who don't want grievously ill patients to get relief if it means taking the untoward expedient of lighting a joint.Of course, if the congressmen who maintain the federal prohibition on medical marijuana had to put their heads in toilet bowls several times a day to vomit from the effects of chemotherapy, they might be less categorical in condemning what some patients do to relieve their nausea. But the federal government has never been famous for its common sense or flexibility, so the war against medical marijuana lumbers on, even in the states that have legalized it.Since the feds systematically suppress attempts to study the potential medical benefits of marijuana, the most important datum in the debate is simply this: Some patients say smoking marijuana is the best way that they can get relief from the nausea associated with chemotherapy and the wasting illness associated with HIV/AIDS. Smoking the drug works better for some patients than Marinol pills, which contain pure THC and have more side effects. The New England Journal of Medicine has advocated the legalization of medical marijuana. In May, the journal Lancet Neurology reported that marijuana's active components alleviate pain in almost every lab test, and called it potentially "the aspirin of the 21st century." Earlier this year, the New York State Association of County Health Officials came out in favor of medical marijuana. The ill health effects of marijuana come from inhaling the smoke into the lungs. This isn't a problem if the use is only short-term, or if the user has a terminal disease. Consumer Reports (no less) writes "that for patients with advanced AIDS and terminal cancer, the apparent benefits some derive from smoking marijuana outweigh any substantiated or even suspected risks."Drug warriors worry that permitting medical marijuana "sends the wrong message" to teenagers. But the popularity of various drugs among youth moves in broad patterns that are not readily influenced by what federal "drug czar" John Walters says or does. And the fact is that -- God bless them -- cancer and AIDS patients aren't glamorous, and are unlikely to prompt an epidemic of youth pot smoking.Might medical marijuana be abused? Of course. That's also true of a host of prescription drugs. But don't tell Walters. Next he will be trying to deny patients the use of morphine and OxyContin. What drug warriors really fear is that if medical marijuana is permitted, it will harm their effort to depict marijuana as utterly nefarious and create the opening for a more rational debate about the legal status of the drug. The drug warriors are already losing ground. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws recently celebrated a vote in Congress that had 152 members voting to ease the federal crackdown on medical marijuana. That's progress, although the cause still needs a high-profile spokesman. If it happens to be a formerly swinging California bodybuilder who enjoyed the 1970s a little too much, so be it.Rich Lowry is editor of National Review, a TownHall.com member group.Source: Town Hall.com (DC)Author: Rich LowryPublished: September 4, 2003Copyright: 2003 King Features SyndicateContact: info townhall.com Website: http://www.townhall.com/NORMLhttp://www.norml.org/CannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

Thanks Patrick
I don't know how to fix it. I'll have to be careful and watch and pay attention that I don't let more then one person have the same name. That could turn into a terrible mess.

Sorry to bother you but I was checking people who want to register and the name someone wants to use is patrick with a small p. Can you try a test post using a small p and see if it works for you before I ok the new person with the same name but not a capital p? It shouldn't allow 2 different people that have the exact same name so I want to test it this way first before I figure out what I should do. Thanks!

News Brief from Reuters
Woody Harrelson's Giant Yoga PartySeptember 5, 2003
TORONTO, Canada (Reuters) -- Academy award-winning actor Woody Harrelson will channel his karmic energy into what he hopes will turn out to be the largest outdoor yoga class in the world -- and all are welcome to participate, rain or shine. Harrelson, in Toronto to promote the film "Go Further" by director-producer Ron Mann, will join fellow cast members for a 90-minute outdoor yoga session on the University of Toronto campus on Sunday morning. Organizers are expecting between 500 to 1,000 people to attend. The former self proclaimed enthusiast of drugs and alcohol tuned into the organic lifestyle for the film as he cycled from Seattle to Los Angeles on a spiritual journey, extolling the virtues of an ecologically sound life. The film chronicles the eco-friendly antics of Harrelson and friends as they traverse the U.S. west coast. "It's kind of a free for all," said Catherine Fawcett of Harrelson's publicity group, FLIP Publicity & Promotions Inc. Participants are urged to bike, walk or take transit to the university as "the air will be nicer to breathe," the press release said. "In the film, which follows Woody down the Pacific Coast highway, he stopped at campuses to speak about sustainable organic living and more often than not, impromptu yoga classes happened at these campuses," said Debbie Rix of Flip. Harrelson, whose acting credits include playing a daft bartender in the television series "Cheers" and the movie "Natural Born Killers" is also a fierce activist of legalizing marijuana.

No mention of Cannabis last night....
but notice Dennis' passionate conviction to his beliefs. If the subject was brought up, he would've recieved another massive round of applause, as he doesn't waffle, and do the Dean dance. His comments were the best recieved, with the loudest applause, and was not 'politician-like', as is kerry, leiberman, and Edwards (clinton-copy). Dean is great on one thing only, he's anti-war, other than that, he is a Doctor who opposed medical cannabis in a state that embraces the idea. Who butters his bread?
Take the poll: Kucinich is winning 50% to Deans 36%!http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/ny-prez2004story,0,5467485.htmlstory?vote8594962=1Poll in the New Mexican:

Hitting the nail on the head again. I am not all that eloquent but that high profile bust shows exactly what you said and that's why I posted it here. The DrugWar has become a wastefully inefficient muscle car that requires very special and expensive fuel to run on...a car that no government can afford to drive anymore. It's time to make this fact as plain as possible. In my humble opinion those pictures provided by the police will do more to prove our point than theirs!!!

I seriously doubt the confisication of 2-tons/4000 lbs of neatly wrapped and packaged cannabis will have any effect on street prices. It just seems to me that the amount taken could be distributed to med patients or something since it is still legal in California for that purpose. Instead some of it will get burned and the rest will line some corrupt law enforcement or public officals pocket I suspect. FoM is right, busts occur all the time so what is the big deal about another one? However, the pictures on local TV news right before the big NFL kickoff of so much pot piled sky high, I thought, showed more of the insanity of prohibition to the average viewer rather than, "oh look isn't our police force doing a bang up job keeping us all safe from the scourge."

Big Busts...and obvious questions not asked
Questions like: " 'Biggest bust yet!' "? And how much did you get in the previous bust? When was the last 'big bust'; last week? And the numbers keep climbing, no? Does that mean you are winning, when even MORE is being confiscated?""How many personnel and how many hours were spent on this, as opposed to, say, a murder investigation? A rape investigation? A child molestation? An armed robbery? A home invasion (they ought to be experts on that, they do it so often)? Or a white collar crime, like the power rip-offs of a few years back? How much money did you spend trying to do this? And how much more do you need to spend, seeing as HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS HAVE BEEN SPENT SINCE 1980 on this idiotic DrugWar against a plant?"The States are on the financial ropes; the situation hasn't been as bad for State coffers since the Great Depression. The more realistic States have begun quietly cutting their civil service rolls, emptying prisons of non-violent offenders (like cannabists) and reducing public welfare programs to almost nonexistence to make ends meet. The DrugWar has become a wastefully inefficient muscle car that requires very special and expensive fuel to run on...a car that no government can afford to drive anymore. It's time to make this fact as plain as possible.

I understand and I'm glad you are ok. I very seldom pay much attention to bust stories unless they are very big busts like WAMM or Ed Rosenthal because unfortunately they happen all the time. I try hard to look for news that we can find something good or if not good necessary to help us put this whole war on some drugs together. If we can keep putting it together we stand a chance at helping to change these very bad laws.

Now that you mention it I am upset but only a little. All my life the "man" puts the obvious (marijuana, cannabis, hemp) aside in favor of the ill-advised (black market, invasion of privacy, continued suffering of medical patients & prison overcrowding). And the big "bust" display on TV just spits in our collective faces of this fact. But hey, I am ok all things considered. :)

Someone in CO is close to ND where the 11 Annual Hemp Conference was 10 days ago please get info to this Laboratory. also they look at microbes for digesting ( e=cola)the cellusose into sugars then to ferment into ethanol. Special announcement: Kucinich stands out on PBS!
Hi FOM! And everyone in the Cannabis community! Hope you can watch the Presidential Democratic Debate, (if your in MDT, you can watchit now, 6-8pm, tonight).http://www.pbs.org/newshour/debate03/Carol Mosley Braun is rocking the house, and Dennis (the kush) Kucinich (ryhmes with Spinach) is hitting everything on the HEAD! DJK is getting a huge response to his ideas and opinions. This man is our next President, so you might as well vote for him, (LOL) as he is the only Democratic Candidate calling for an end to the War on Drugs, and believes in the same dream we all share here. Kucinich.us for more! As a Cannabis activist, Kucinich is the only man with integrity, who won't waffle, kiss ass, and let the corporate criminals continue to plunder our country and the world. He is a Green running as a Democrat, basically, and has won every election (in a majority Republican District)with a majority of Republicans voting for him. Only Dennis can beat bush and turn this sinking ship around. Sorry to be so 'campainy', but I've seen the world change since i've been coming to C-News, and know this man will be the one, (born the same day as Ghandi!) Ready for the demise of the bush empire?
I recommend everyone consider dedicating your lives to getting him elected, and thus bringing the dream of legal cannabis, and and end to the war on Cannabis patients, something that needs to comes true now, not after we've all moved on the the permanent cannabis plantation in the sky!

Major Cannabis Bust!
In beautiful San Diego. Chula Vista to be exact. Cops displayed over 2-tons of packaged cannabis today on network TV news including tons of cash, watertoys/boats, fancy cars, a beamer, machine guns and two high-end attractive pieces of Southern California real estate. Paraded as a major bust by law enforcement it actually illustrates the obvious economics of supply and demand. Law enforcement made no arrests and encountered no violence of any kind. For cops it was like, walk in and load up the moving van you guys. Actually, just put all this stuff together in a pile and take lots of pictures. This blatant media display of law enforcement "prowess" or "bust-ability" only proves the point that this little wonderful plant should be relegalized for responsible adults. It's a simple freedom issue no different than casino gambling. In my opinion the fence sitters just by seeing this big bust on TV will be saying to themselves "what a waste of our policing powers. This only shows it should be regulated or legal or something."

Bandwagoners
I still say Arnold is trying to outdo Jesse Ventura. He has been extremely jealous since Jesse was elected governor of Minnesota. Arnold doesn't have half the intellect or common sense that Jesse "The Mind" Ventura has. It's funny how all of the major recall candidated are for mmj...they know they don't have much of a chance if they oppose it. Arianna & Camejo(Green Party) are obviously sincere, but the RepubliCrat candidates are simply bandwagoners that will say anything to get elected. The way out is the way in...Bin Laden family's US exit 'approved' on 9/11:

They're talking about the "race to the bottom" caused by lack of environmental and labor standards in NAFTA and the WTO. Dennis Kucinich (sp?) says he would use an executive order to reinstitute bilateral trade since he says changing NAFTA to include environmental and labor standards would run afoul of WTO.

biofuels for the diesel engine
Rudolph Diesel's air compression engine was originally designed to run on biofuels. He was no fuel."On February 27, 1892, Diesel filed for a patent at the Imperial Patent Office in Germany. Within a year, he was granted Patent No. 67207 for a "Working Method and Design for Combustion Engines . . .a new efficient, thermal engine." With contracts from Frederick Krupp and other machine manufacturers, Diesel began experimenting and building working models of his engine. In 1893, the first model ran under its own power with 26% efficiency, remarkably more than double the efficiency of the steam engines of his day. Finally, in February of 1897, he ran the "first diesel engine suitable for practical use, which operated at an unbelievable efficiency of 75%. Diesel demonstrated his engine at the Exhibition Fair in Paris, France in 1898. This engine stood as an example of Diesel's vision because it was fueled by peanut oil - the "original" biodiesel. He thought that the utilization of a biomass fuel was the real future of his engine. He hoped that it would provide a way for the smaller industries, farmers, and "commonfolk" a means of competing with the monopolizing industries, which controlled all energy production at that time, as well as serve as an alternative for the inefficient fuel consumption of the steam engine. As a result of Diesel's vision, compression ignited engines were powered by a biomass fuel, vegetable oil, until the 1920's and are being powered again, today, by biodiesel."http://www.ybiofuels.org/bio_fuels/history_diesel.html
